Dividing 2-digit by 1-digit Numbers

STANDARD:
Standard - CC.2.2.3.A.1
Represent and solve problems involving multiplication and division.
I. Performance Objectives (Learning Outcomes):
The fourth grade students will demonstrate their understanding of dividing 2-digit by 1digit numbers by completing Kahoot quiz on iPads.
II. Instructional Materials
A. A Remainder of One by Elinor J. Pinczes
B. iPads
C. Division cards
D. Smartboard
E. Envision book
F. White boards
III. Subject Matter/Content
A. Prerequisite skills
1. Division
B. Key Vocabulary
1. Divisors - a number by which another number is to be divided.
C. Big Idea
1. Dividing by 1-Digit Divisors
D. Content
1. Dividing using 2-digit numbers
IV. Implementation
A. Introduction

1. Gather students into whole group discussion.

2. Present students with the problem: 82 divided by 5 on the
Smartboard and ask the students, What are some ways that we
could solve this problem?
3. Discuss with the students different ways that they could figure out
the problem.
4. Ask the students, Do I know my 82 times tables? No, that would be
crazy!
5. Tell the students to keep their predictions that they made throughout
the lesson to see if they were correct at the end of the lesson.
6. Explain to students that they will be learning how divide 2-digit
numbers by 1-digit numbers.
7. Share video by Envisions about dividing 2-digit by 1-digit numbers.
B. Development
1. After going over the Envisions video, have the students return to
their seats and explain that they will be working together to go over
how to do long division.
2. Pass out iPads to the students and explain that they will be using the
whiteboard app to show their work.
3. Explain to the students the process of the division algorithm,
reminding the students that they have to keep their numbers in the
proper place value.
4. After solving a problem, share with the students that they need to
check their answer with multiplication.
5. Practice the problems on their iPads and share their answers to
check them.
6. After the students practice their problems, pair students up into
groups of two and give each pair cards that have division problems
on them.
7. Explain to the students that they will be working in pairs to solve the
problems on their iPads.
8. The students will draw a card from the pile and they will have to
solve the problem together and share their answers.
9. After the students practice the problems, have the students return to
their seats.
10. Explain to the students that they will be taking a practice quiz with
the app Kahoot.
11. Explain the app to the students and demonstrate a practice quiz so
the students understand how to use the app.
12. After the demonstration, start the quiz for the students and allow
them to work on the problems on their iPads.
13. After completing the quiz, collect the iPads.

C. Closure
1. Have a discussion with the students about the app and how they
liked the quiz.
2. Ask the students, Out of all the other strategies you learned for
division, which one to you like the best?
3. Take a poll with the students and discuss.
4. After the discussion, present students with homework and explain
that they will be learning how to divide 3-digit by 1-digit numbers
the next day.
D. Accommodations/Differentiation
1. For students who are struggling with the new strategy of dividing,
allow them to practice with a previous strategy.
E. Assessment/Evaluation Plan
1. Formative Kahoot quiz
2. Summative no summative at this time
V. Reflective Response
A. Report of Student Performance in Terms of Stated Objectives
The students did very well during this lesson, they understood the content and
were able to show their understanding during the partner activity and the
Kahoot quiz. 100% of the students performed at an acceptable rate and were
able to complete the tasks in this lesson. They really seemed to enjoy dividing
using the standard algorithm and being able to use the iPads.
The students achievement during this lesson helps me see that they are ready
to move onto the next step of division, but I still think that I will spend
another day practicing this skill to make sure that the students are very
comfortable with their performance because this is the big step for them.
B. Personal Reflection
Is there anything you would like to change about this lesson?
I believe that this lesson went very well and there is not much that I would change about
this lesson. If I had to choose something to fix, I would change the pacing of the lesson to
make sure the students are all on the same pace and to accommodate to the students who
may fall behind.

Were the students engaged during the lesson?

Yes, the students were engaged during this lesson. They loved being able to use the iPads
to show their work instead of just using paper and pencil or the whiteboards. The students
really enjoyed using Kahoot at the end of the lesson as well because it is like a game for
them. It allows them to show their knowledge truly and be able see what answers they get
right or wrong.
