Weve gone back to school at Animal Magic Dog Club and have lots of
fun planned to keep us warm over the winter term. From puppy classes
to Kennel Club Obedience, Agility and Flyball, theres lots on offer to
ensure we have a community of well trained dogs and owners! At our
club we take the social responsibility of dog ownership very seriously,
as well as looking after the pooches we also do our bit to look after the
planet by offering bio-degradable poo bags for sale in the club shop.
This term weve been joined by Liz King, Crabtales editor and owner
of the beautiful Sasha. Liz offered Sasha a home when she became
unwanted, her previous owners had another child on the way and were
moving home and there was no room for this lovely dog. At around
eighteen months old Sasha is still a baby herself but its suspected
shes had litter of puppies already. Liz and Sasha have enrolled in the
Junior and Adult Dog Foundation class which is aimed at going back
to basics, ideal for dogs that have been rescued or had little training
in their younger years. It provides a safe and controlled environment
where dogs and owners can learn, socialise and build a lasting bond.
Well bring you more news of their progress in the coming weeks..

With Friends
Students from Cromer Academy visited About With Friends recently to present a second cheque to the charity and receive a tour of the organisations
facilities. The student council comprises of two students from each year group who meet fortnightly. One of the key achievements of the council is
the fundraising they do for local charities. Each year they raise money for lots of different charitiesthrough a series of events. About with Friends
and Cromer RNLI benefitted from a range of activities
during RAG week in April 2015. These included a talent
show, cake sales and a Sponge The Teacher stall. Then in
September a sponsored walk raised even more money
for the two charities. In all About With Friends received
800 from the Academy in 2015.
After presenting the second cheque in December the
council were invited to visit About With Friends and
joined Workskills members, staff and volunteers at
the morning meeting where notices are read out and
work for the day assigned. One student said it was a
bit different from school assemblies. Adults on the
Workskills programme all have a learning disability but
they come to About With Friends to do real work. Students were shown the workshop where good such as candles are produced for sale although
much attention was devoted to the commission of 100 Beach Huts for the Cromer and Sheringham Crab and Lobster Festival.
They then visited the Base on Holt Road where they saw the caterers state of the art commercial kitchen but they barely had time to chat to the
caterers as they were on their way to run a Lunch Club for the Over 55s at North Walsham. Next door other members were greeting guests other
adults with learning disabilities from local residential homes to the Wednesday Social Club where games, refreshments and bingo are all laid on my
Workskills members.
Finally they visited the AWF Community Caf in Tucker Street where they were treated to hot chocolate and cakes made by members. After the tour
the students said they were very pleased they had chosen About With Friends as their charity.
This is not the only link between the two organisations as students sometimes carry our work experience at the charity. AWF are also providing
refreshments at the Academys production of Bugsy Malone on 8-10th March. Tickets for this are available from the school office on 01263 511433
For further information please contact Steve Smith 01263 515230
About With Friends is a fun, active and energetic charity based in Cromer. We offer children, young people and adults with learning disabilities
the ves they choose. When they become part of our family they have opportunities to develop lasting friendships; engage in fun and active social
activities; get involved in the community; have the chance to try new experiences; learn new skills both for life and work; but above all feel a valued
part of society while enjoying life to the full.

Overstrand
Gardening Club
The Overstrand Gardening Club held their first
meeting of 2016 on Tuesday 2nd February.
The first part of the meeting started with the
our Annual General Meeting. The Club duly
elected its committee and a new Chairman
Mr Geoff Turner. Dr Joe Gaston had decided
to stand down as Chairman, the committee
expressed its thanks to Joe for all the his work
and support over recent years.
The second part of the meeting we welcomed
Tony Smith whose talk was entitled All you
need to know about compost. Tony brought
along various samples of compost, and
showed members the different make up and
consistences. Tony explained the importance
of the soil being able to breath, aeration and
drainage was vital in giving the plant the
opportunity in producing a good root system.
Perlite helps open the compost, and Vermiculite
is good for covering seeds. Alpine grit is good
for Cacti, and the use of Horticultural grit is
good for aeration and dressing tops of pots. The
talk was well received, and gave members lots
to think about.
Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday
March 1st at 2.30pm when the Gardening Club
welcomes Charlotte Philcox; the talk is called
Enclosing Eden A history of the kitchen
garden.

Mundesley Mumblings
Its February, and its that in the middle not quite sure month. Too far
from Christmas and thankfully a payday after January so things dont
seem quite as bad. Too early for Easter but just every now and then
it seems to be a little lighter for just that little bit longer. Walking the
beach these first few days has been magical with some cracking hours
of sunshine. The cliffs have broken off the wind to make even the
weakest February sunshine seem just magical. I met a lovely couple the
other day who were just sat on the sand in the sun watching the waves.
They were disturbed from the reverie by my curious dog who cannot
resist saying hello. It transpired that they were just visiting and could
not resist just taking a moment to sit and stare at the waves. It made
me think when was the last time I literally just sat and did absolutely
nothing? Honestly, I could not remember. Note to self, be more
Mindful. NB to Note to Self, better book it in the diary as it will never
happen otherwise!
So how many us had our hearts broken or filled with love this Valentines
Day? As my dear and darling husband always manages to remember
this date, (mainly due to the wonderful invention of calendar reminders
on his phone) I remember my best friends wise counsel that its all
about the words and not overblown showy protestations. Mind you, as
any women will tell you every now and then showy and overblown will
surely rack up brownie points for use at a later date so go ahead and
surprise us every now and then go on, we wont tell, honest!
Most importantly we begin the cycle of a whole new set of celebrations
and notable dates for the year. I know talking to colleagues at work
the consensus was that our friends in Europe fared much better than us
with fiestas and fests at every opportunity, but when we started counting
up what we do here in good ol Blighty we too have pretty much an
excuse each month to reflect, celebrate and bring together friends and
family. This month we had Shrove Tuesday, Valentines; the Mundesley
Panto (not to be missed!) then its the first half term for the schools too.
Whether you have a faith or not; regardless if your family is large or
small, if it consists of generations of relations or a just a good friend to
spend time with, just do it. So maybe February is the month to be more
Mindful, to take 10 minutes and just stop. As always my son is the one
who seems to be able to sum it all up. As I struggled to get the pancakes
right last year, when they were either under or over cooked, or stuck (of
course they were meant to be like that- not!) he said just put more lemon
and sugar on then you cant tell! So Im off down the beach to watch
the waves and put more lemon and sugar in my life, if only for just for
one brief moment

Victory Swim & Fitness Centre has once again taken on the Swimathon challenge to
encourage swimmers in North Norfolk to take on a Swimathon Challenge as a team or as
an individual to raise funds for Sport Relief.
From Friday 18th March Sunday 20th March,Swimathon will take place in over 600
pools across the UK. Swimathon returns in 2016 with official charity partner Sport Relief
as part of the Sainsburys Sport Relief Games with registration opening on Tuesday 24th
November 2015. After a year away, Sport Relief is returning as charity partner with the
aim to reach even higher fundraising numbers than in the past.Swimathon 2014 raised
over 2.6 million for Sport Relief.
Swimathon is the worlds biggest fundraising swimming event with thousands of people
jumping into pools around the UK. You can choose from 1.5k, 2.5k or 5k individual
distances. For those who prefer a team challenge, you could also form a relay squad to
tackle the 1.5k and 5k distances with your water-loving friends and lap up the glory.
Stuart Jardine, General Manager at Victory Swim & Fitness Centre added: The
Sainsburys Sport Relief Swimathon is a fantastic way to bring our community together,
while providing ample opportunity to get fit and healthy in the pool. North Norfolk
residents can take the plunge themselves, along with family and friends to complete a
swimming challenge of their choice, be it 1.5k or 5k, all while raising funds for those in
need.
Swimathon President and Olympic gold-medallist Duncan Goodhew said, I love
Swimathon because it gives people a goal to train for, an extra reason to get in the pool
and above all else it helps to raise money for a truly fantastic cause.

MINDFULLNESS.
MENTAL-HEALTH ISNT MADNESS
As a Person-Centred Psychotherapist I work with the holistic person. Let me explain,
from my perspective there are five aspects that shape the human condition:
Mind (our thought processes)
Body (our physical self)
Spirit (our beliefs, ethics, values & principles)
Emotions (our felt self)
Sociological (world around us)
Each works in relation to the other, in other words they are interconnected shaping the
person we are. For this article I want to focus on the first two our mind and body.
Last week, in the guardian newspaper, they were discussing the growing evidence of
the impact of our mental health onphysicalwellbeing, although generally these have been
seen as two separate issues they are in fact related. Further, physical health has generally
been considered the starting point for greater mental health.
However I challenge this theory and through personal as well as professional experience
have seen the opposite to be true. I have found that on many occasions physical
symptoms reflect mental health issues, for example, excessive weight gain due to past
trauma leading to low self-worth or poor self-esteem.
There is also a growing body of evidence linking long term stress or poorly managed
stress to a lowering of our immune system. Further as a former Director of a Cancer
services based charity I have seen research linking poorer recovery rates for individuals
with serious mental health issues also being treated for various cancers regardless at
what stage they are diagnosed.
On a personal level I experienced acute IBS (Irritable BowelSyndrome) on an almost
daily basis throughout my teenage years and most of my adult life. I went through many
of the medical treatments from pills, diet, cameras down my throat etc. with no success.
Only to be told there was no cure and I would have to manage my symptoms.
However after accessing personal therapy as part of my training as a psychotherapist
and later as a personal choice I eventually not only reduced my symptoms but have not
had a single bout in many years.
It could be argued that my training enabled me to overcome my health issues when in
fact it was through my personal therapy, identifying past trauma and difficult times in
my life that I was able to identify triggers, understand and reshape my psychological and
emotional processes.
Its also important to recognise that trauma can be shaped by many things not just one
powerful moment such as abuse, bullying, unresolved grief due to loss or a childhood
experience, it maybe poorly managed stress, unresolved anger, an unhappy work
environment, the list is endless, for each person it is unique one size does not fit all.
So our mental health really does matter, listen to what your body is telling you how are
your stress levels?Do you catch every cough and cold even though you eat healthily and
exercise regularly? Are you really striking the right balance between mind and body?
Seeing a Psychotherapist is like seeing a dietician about your nutritonal needs, or a
doctor about a physical symptom you dont understand, taking care of your mental
health needs is imperative to a well-balanced and happy life.
If you have any questions about this article or general enquires please email me or
alternatively visit my website, I will also be running some workshops locally so drop me
your contact details and I will keep you informed.
