Part 1 - Planning

What issue Have you chosen for your website?

The issue that I have chosen is racial discrimination against Aboriginal people in Australia.
Why did I chose this issue?
I chose this issue because I found it quite serious. Racial discrimination has been around in the world for a long time, and is still
continuing until now. Also the issue regarding the racial discrimination against the aboriginals is an issue that Im zealous about, since I
believe that everyone should be treated equally and not judge by whether they are native or not.
What Issue Element did you choose
Issue Element 1: Are there laws against or support racism against the Aboriginal people?
Issue Element 2: What caused the racial discrimination in Australia?
Issue Element 3: What are the affect on the Aboriginal people in Australia?
Why Did you choose these Elements?
Issue Element 1: Are there laws against or support racism against the Aboriginal people?
I chose this element because laws are very important in every country, it is a kind of written rule that everyone must follow. I think that the
law may hugely affect the way people think, if the law supports the discrimination against the aborigines, it may be a main cause of the
discrimination, leading the rest of Australia to think less of the Aborigines.
Issue Element 2: What caused the racial discrimination in Australia?
I chose this element because I think that it is very important to understand where this idea of discrimination came from. Like the starting
of this issue. Knowing and understanding where it all began may help me raise awareness more affectively, showing people how it all
started and what went wrong.
Issue Element 3: What are the affect on the Aboriginal people in Australia?
I chose this issue Element because I want to know how are the Aboriginal people are affected by the discrimination. How are they treated
and do they have and limitations or disadvantage because of the discrimination. I believe by knowing more about the victims
(aboriginals) of this issue will help me promote and raise awareness about this issue, showing others what are the effects of
discrimination.

Part 3 - Finding information

What do I have to find out about?

I am going to research about my issue element: Are there laws against or support racism against the Aboriginal people? What caused the
racial discrimination in Australia? and
What are the affect on the Aboriginal people in Australia?
How will I find this information?
I will find these information on different websites online, such as a website called Creative Spirits, a website which talks about the current
issue in Australia. I can also find some background information about the aboriginals in books, to help me further understand the cause of
the discrimination against the aboriginal people.
Issue Element: Are there laws against or support
racism against the Aboriginal people?
Source 1:
http://www.creativespirits.info/aboriginalculture/law/
#axzz3yQQvR5Gx

Overview of source:
This source gives a very detailed explanation
regarding the law in Australia. I also gives statistics
about aboriginals, their freedom, opportunities and
much more. This source also includes many
different perspectives of people, both aboriginals
and Australians.

Origin
This website is created by Jens Korff from Creative
Spirits.

Value
This is a good website because it includes a lot of
statistics in many different racism aspects, such as
political, education, health aspect. I can use it in my
website to emphasise on my point about racism.

Purpose
The purpose of this source is to educate people
about racism in Australia and discrimination against
the Aboriginal people. I think that this website is also
used to raise awareness to a wide range of people
and not only to Australians regarding this issue.

Limitations
There are a few limitation on this website. Firstly,
there are too many statistics and not many
information you can use to produce text and
educate people on about this issue, also I think that
the range of statistics per aspect is very narrow,

Issue Element:What caused the racial

discrimination in Australia?
Source 2:
http://www.racismnoway.com.au/about-racism/
understanding/

Overview of source:
This website outlines what is racism and more
specifically the racial discrimination against
aboriginals in Australia. It also give an overview
about the general laws in Australia which prevents
racism.

Origin
This website is created by the NSW Government,
Department of Education 2015.

Value
This website has a vey clear and concise
information about racism in Australia and talks a lot
about some history and background information. It is
a very interactive website with a very nice timeline
that clearly represent the history of Australia and the
colonisation of Australia which plays a big part in the
cause.

Purpose
The purpose of this site is mostly to inform people
about racism. But it seems more like a website
directed to students or anyone who is doing
research about this issue, since it is quite wordy and
it might not attract many peoples information to
raise awareness about this issue.

Limitations
Like I have mentioned, this website is quite wordy,
and there are no picture and visual representation
that might help except for the timeline. Also there is
not much information about everything in general, it
is clear and concise but I wish it could have
elaborated on the causation of racism a little more.

Issue Element:What are the affect on the

Aboriginal people in Australia?
Source 3:
http://www.racismnoway.com.au/teachingresources/factsheets/59.html

Overview of source:
This source give a very detailed explanation of the
White Australia Policy. It also show the affects the
White Australian Policy has on not only Aboriginals
but also any non-white immigrants

Origin
This website is created by the NSW Government,
Department of Education 2015.

Value
This website has a vey clear and concise
information about racism in Australia and the White
Australian Policy. I give a detailed explanation of
the policy and how it affects the country. It also
includes not only the aboriginals point of view about
this policy but also the White Australians point of
view.

Purpose
The purpose of this site is mostly to inform people
about racism. But it seems more like a website
directed to students or anyone who is doing
research about this issue, since it is quite wordy and
it might not attract many peoples information to
raise awareness about this issue.

Limitations
This is a very good website with quite lot of
information, but since in this website the victims of
the discrimination was very broad, therefore it
couldnt really pinpoint the affects it has on the
Aboriginals.

Real life stories

Source 4:
http://www.smh.com.au/national/five-experienceswith-racism-in-australia-20130530-2neu9.html

Overview of source:
This sources gives a lot of real life examples about
racial discrimination in Australia. It gives a totally of
5 incident of racial discrimination who the victims
are and a brief description of eh incident.

Origin
The website is created by Fairfax Media

Value
This website is good because it does give a detailed
description about each incident. Also all the
informations are clear and easy to process. It also
include pictures that corresponds to a specific
incident.

Purpose
I think that the purpose of this website is just to
generally spread awareness about this issue. Since
Fairfax media writes the Sydney Morning Herald,
therefore, it is a possibility that this website is just to
inform people about the pros and cons about the
country.

Limitations
There are quite a few limitations. Firstly, there is not
a wide range of real life examples given and the
choices are very limited. Also since the topic is
Racism in Australia, it did not pinpoint examples of
racial discrimination against aboriginals.

Research
Are there laws against or support racism against the Aboriginal people?
- It is illegal for people to participate or encourage any discriminative activities
- It is unlawful to discriminate anyone because of the race, ethnicity, colour, nationality and descent
- Under the Australian Legislation, it is also unlawful to discriminate an individual if their relative(s) is a different race
These laws are to ensure protection to each individual in Australia, and to those who have made complaints about racism. All states
territories of Australia anti-discrimination laws that cover all aspects of racial discrimination. Australia being part of the international

conventions and declarations, is effected by The Commonwealth Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission Act (1986) which
supports anti - racism.
Commonwealth and State laws for racial discrimination covers all aspects such as discrimination in employment, the provision of goods
and services, education and accommodation .
Consequences:
Sanctions exists for any racist activities and there are criminal laws for any violent act of racial discrimination.
Chosen Statistics
11 times higher chance that an aboriginal child aged between 11-14 is charged by the police compared to a non- aboriginal child.
300 minimum amount of indigenous people were arrested and taken to custody every week.
83% of the North territories prison population is aboriginal people.
What caused the racial discrimination in Australia? and What are the affect on the Aboriginal people in Australia?

- Colonisation - British and Europeans

Discrimination against the aboriginal people - indigenous people of Australia was caused by the invasion and the colonisation by the
British and and europeans. Since there was a vast amount of settlers from Europe, the europeans and the British started to
discriminated against non- english speaker which include the aboriginal people. Between 1606 - 1788, ships of the europeans and the
British were docking at the coasts of Australia, claiming the Australian coast alongside many other places such as Sydney, Van Dieman
and Botany bay.
There is a history aspect to this issue. In the year of 1770, Captain James Cook a British explorer arrived at Botany bay, and he took
over the East coast. Since then, many other boats from Europe has been arriving at Australia, claiming lands and driving the aboriginal
people out of their homes at the same time. It wasn't until 1790, the aboriginal people started to fight back, they tried to resisted the
Europeans taking over their land, but unfortunately, not only did they not succeed, many were killed too. Europeans were given authority
to kill and shoot any aboriginal people, Many events occurred such as the gold rush and the potato famine in Ireland brought a lot of
migrant to Australia around from around the world, as the population of migrants started to expand, the amount of aboriginals killed

increased more and more. Killing Aboriginal people was allowed to everyone, most aboriginal people were killed, and some were
kidnapped and forced to do severely dangerous jobs. Children was also taken from their homes and family into the White Australian
Families, hoping their Offsprings will gradually evolve into a white Australian.
1900, the White Australian Policy was introduce. This is a policy which provides many restriction to those who are not white Australian,
including the aboriginals. The white Australian policy includes a diction test in a specific language ( English ) for those who wants to apply
a job must pass this test, this acts prevents any non- white Australian to get a job, who may not be familiar with this language. All in all,
this policy prevents any non- white Australians to get and working chances, educational chances, and even life chances. This policy was
widely regarded as 'the greatest thing we've achieved'.

Action plan

I wrote a detailed
description on why I
chose this research
question and what made
me chose this research
questions. I have also
written a brief description
of the main sources that
I used.

I could have added more

detail to my description
on my website, and
possibly add my
research to my action
plan,

I should add more detail

to the description of the
websites and bullet point
all of my research to my
action plan inorder to
make it clear.

Website

I made my website
aesthetically pleasing
hoping it might attract
more attention as a
website trying to spears
awareness about an
issue.

I could have describe

more in detail about the
real life incidents to
further emphasise on the
issue. Also I could have
include more on how this
might affect the
aboriginal people

To improve, I should
research more about the
affects and the
consequences on the
Aboriginal people. Also I
could look for more
information in the real life
cases by searching up
more sure s finding any
more information on the
same case.
