Joshua Yis passion for music can be traced back to when he began piano studies at the

age of 6. After watching church praise bands as a kid, he gravitated towards the kinetic and
infectious energy of the drums. Joshuas passion for music and the drums has taken him through
honors orchestras, wind ensembles, marching bands, jazz bands, and a the two-time international
champion percussion ensemble (Woodbridge Percussion Ensemble). Joshua has been an active
musician in the San Diego scene for 6 years, performing in various styles and settings including
those of jazz, swing, rock, hip-hop, funk/soul/RnB, Latin (Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, Caribbean,
etc.), broadway, marching, orchestral, electronic, and avant-garde.
Joshua has instructed drum students ranging from the ages of 4 to 60. His passion for
teaching goes well beyond the limits of music and toward the fulfillment of personal
development and success of each student. This approach, directly influenced by his experience
working with children with developmental disabilities, demands thoughtfulness, customizing a
vision that best fits the needs and skill set of the individual. Joshuas ability to perform and teach
a wide variety of musical styles, accompanied with his extensive experience working with
children, gives him a unique ability to be a versatile, engaging instructor.
