reactiontothefindings?
Oneofthethingsthatsurfacedasaresultofthissurveyisouraboveaveragescoreon
excellenceinprofessionalpractice.ProfessionalLearningCommunitiesareoneofthe
areaswithwhichweprideourselves.Teachersparticipateinverticalteamsweeklyfor
onehourandwehavemonthlyprofessionaldevelopmentdayswithourearlydismissal
schedule.InstructionalSpecialistsoftenbringcontentspecificresourcestoverticalteam
meetings,andadministrationandteachersoftenpresenttoolsatprofessional
developments.WealsosendteacherstotrainingsthroughouttheyearthroughWayne
RESA,SVSU,andMACUL.Whentheyreturn,theydispersetheinformationtostaff.
Thusfarthisyear,therehavebeentrainingsonRemind101,Plickers,Edline,Data
Director,andmuchmore.OurmathematicsdepartmentusedCarnegieLearnings
CognitiveTutorprogramandthesciencedepartmentismovingtowardsprojectbased
learningandonlinelabs.Ourstaffiscertainlyabreastofnewtrendsineducation.
Anothernotablefindingisourlowratingondigitalcitizenship.Wecertainlydonothave
collaborativelearningprojectsthataredrivenbytechnology.Studentsarecurrently
involvedinaresearchproject,whichspanstwodepartments.Still,alloftheworkand
collaborationiscompletedinclass.Thisisnotrepresentativeofhowprojectswilloccur
inhighereducation.Weneedtoexposestudentstoweb2.0toolsandthenormsof
interactingonline.
Afinalfindingfromthisevaluationisthatweareabsentfromthepolicyprocess.Asa
schooldistrict,wedonotadvocateonlocal,state,ornationallevelsforpolices,funding
tosupportourvisionandstrategicplan.Whilewetakeadvantageofcertainfunding,
suchas31AandTitleI,wearelikelymissingoutonopportunities.Furthermore,weare
voicelessandautomaticallyacceptingofpoliciesatthelocalandstatelevelwithout
sharingtheperspectiveofurbancharterschool.Wemustbecomemoreinvolvedand
informed.

2. Areyoumoreadvanced,aboutthesame,orbehindyourschoolin
understandingandusingtechnologystandardsforadministrators?Whydo
youthinkthis?
Iammoreadvancedthanmyschoolinmyunderstandingofusingtechnologystandards
foradministrators.ThisisinlargepartduetothefactthatIobtainedaMastersdegree
inEducationalTechnology.Icreatedourschooltechnologyplanandensuredthatthere
wascorrespondingtechnologyincludedintheschoolimprovementplan.Iamvery
consciousofthefactthatweneedtomakemoreofaconcertedefforttopromotedigital
citizenship.IhavebeenworkingwiththeComputersteachertoincludemoreweb2.0
applicationsintothecurriculum,yetsheonlyserviceslessthanonehundredstudentsper

year.Therefore,wehavefocusedonprofessionalgrowthinregardstotechnology.Staff
membersattendprofessionaldevelopmentsontheinclusionoftechnologyandhave
presentedtotherestofthestaffontheirfindings.Weareprogressiveinouruseof
technologyforinstructionandasformativeassessments.Istronglybelievethatweneed
toincludetechnologyinamorestudentcenteredmannerinthefuture.GiventhatIam
themostfamiliarwiththestandards,Imustleadthechargeonthismovement.

3. Whatareyourbarriersinutilizingthetechnologystandardsfor
administrators?
Sorensonstatesthatdeliveringthemandatedcurriculumisanabsoluteimperative
(p.213).TheneedtoreachtherigorousCommonCoreStateStandardsisabarriertothe
implementationoftechnology.OursubparratingonSystemicImprovementis
indicativeofthis.Thesharedvisionofourschoolismanifestedinourdedicationto
qualityinstructionandbuildingarigorouscurriculumthataddressestheCCSS.
Maximizingdigitalageresourcesisanafterthought.Strategicplansaregearedmore
towardsimprovingthecurriculumandaddressingstandardsthattransitioningstudentsto
the21stcenturyexpectationsofcollege.Ourstrategicpartnershipsdonotrevolvearound
technology.Studentsareabletoenrollinfreecommunitycollegecourses,yetthe
coursesareallinpersonafterschool.
Anotherbarrierwefaceasadministratorsistheresistanceofteachers.Whileour
professionaldevelopmentisaboveaveragewithregardstoofferings,therearestill
teacherswhoarereluctanttochangetheirlongstandingapproachestoteaching.We
havealargedivideintheteachingstaffbetweenVeteranswhoseetechnologyasa
foreigntermandMillennials(Sorenson,p.204).TheVeteransattendverticalteam
meetingsandprofessionaldevelopments,butfailtoincludetechnologyintotheirlesson
plans.Thisissomethingwemustaddresswhenmovingtowardanewevaluationtool.

4. Whatwouldhelpimproveyourabilitytoleadaschoolinimplementing
technologystandardstoadministrators?
Oneofthethingsthatwouldgreatlyassistmyabilitytoleadinimplementingthe
technologystandardswouldbeaTechnologySpecialist.Allofourtechnologypersonnel
arefromtheITside,withnocurriculumexperience.Itwouldbeverybeneficialforour
schooltohaveaTechnologyCoordinatorwhocouldfollowupwithteachersafter
professionaldevelopments.SittingwithteachersandworkingthroughaWebquestor
collaborativeonlineassignmentwouldbeverybeneficialforfirsttimers.Our
InstructionalSpecialistsareVeteransandaremorededicatedtocurriculumandrelatively
unfamiliarwithnewtechnologies.

Anothernecessaryinputintotechnologyleadershipistime.Itisverydifficulttodevelop
strategicplans,createadigitalculture,ensurefunding,scheduleprofessional
developments,andfollowupwithtechnologyimplementationalongwithallother
responsibilitiesofbeinganadministrator.Unfortunately,managingtheSIS,handling
studentdisciplineandbeingtestcoordinatoroftentakeupthebruntofmyfreetime.
SorensonstatesthatPrincipalswhoareactivelyinvolvedinthecurriculumseea510%
higherscoreonstandardizedtests(p.61).Tohelpmedevotemoretimetothiscause,
therewillneedtobeareassignmentofdutiesandresponsibilities.Thisisactuallyinthe
worksfornextyear.

5. Ifyouweretheinfamoustechnologyfairyandcouldgrantyourschoolthree
technologywishestohelpyourschoolbetterusetheNETSA,whatwould
yourthreewishesbe?Whatinfluencedyourselectionofthesethreewishes?

TechnologyCoordinator:Thisindividualwouldbeabletoassistteachersprepare
forprofessionaldevelopmentscenteredontechnology,leadPDsontechnology,
andcollaboratewithteachersonlessonsandprojectsthatrelatetoprofessional
developments.Furthermore,thisindividualwouldbeabletoscourtheeducational
landscapeforprospectiveprogramsthatcouldassistourstudentsandteachers.

1:1StudenttoLaptopRatioAND4G:Ifeachstudentwereassignedalaptopor
tabletwewouldhavefarlessissueswiththeincorporationoftechnology.Alarge
percentageofourstudentsdonothavelaptopsorInternetaccessathome.This
currentlylimitsourabilitytoplancollaborativeprojectsoutsideoftheclassroom
andpreventsusfromcreatingasystemictechnologybasedcurriculum.

UnlimitedProfessionalDevelopmentBudget:Themostvaluableformof
technologyprofessionaldevelopmentsarethosethatareledbyourownstaff.If
wehadalimitlessbudget,wecouldhavestaffattendPDsandpresentonabi
weeklybasis.Ourteacherswouldbeprivytoanarrayofoptionsthatfittheir
specificneeds.WhilewedooffertechnologybasedPDsmorethanmostother
schools,itwouldbegreattosendteachersregularlyandhaveagreaterarrayof
options.

6. LookattheaveragescoresforeachoftheNETSA.Ifthereisascorethat
isparticularlyhigherorlowerthantheothers,orifscoresareallrelatively
close,whydidthescoresfallintothisparticularpattern?
Ourhighestscoreisstandard3:excellenceinprofessionalpractice.Thisisbecausewe
doofferprofessionaldevelopmentsontechnologyanddoadoptnewtechnologiesand
providecorrespondingtraining.Ourlowestscoreisstandard5:digitalcitizenship.This
canbeattributedtothefactthattherearenotcollaborativelearningprojectsthrough

technology,partiallyduetoourstudentslackofaccessathome.Therealsoisnota
focusontheethicalandlegalInternetregulationsinourcomputersclassdueto
resistance.Twootherstandards,SystemicImprovementandDigitalAgeLearning
Culture,arebothbelowaverageaswell.Whilemanyteachersutilizetechnological
resourcestoincreaseengagement,asanassessmenttool,andtodeepenunderstanding,
thisisnotpervasive.Thereisanoffering,butnotaconcertedefforttosystemicallyhave
technologyincludedinallaspectsofthecurriculum.Ibelievethiswillcomeoncethere
ismorecomfortwiththenewstandards,standardizedtests,andevaluationtool.
