Because the sonatina is a shorter. simpler and leaner form of the sonata. it is an excellent stepping-stone to the more difficult and compiex works by the masters. Previous editions of these masterpieces left much to be desired. For this edition, Allan Small has painstakingly revised the entire contents, eliminating impractical fingerings, awkward page turns and unnecessary accidentals. The newly engraved music has increased the spacing of the more crowded Sonatinas creating cleaner-looking pages that are easier and more enjoyable to read. Additionally, Beethoven's well-known and splendid Sonatina in G and the whimsical Sonatina by Diabelli, both papular favorites, have been added, establishing Alfred's edition of the Sonatina Album as the most innovative and attractive edition available. The Spanish painter Francisco de Zurbaran’s (1598-1664) Still ‘SONATINA Life with Lemons, Oranges and FOR THE P1ANO a Rose was chosen as the cover ALBUM woul RSinen art for this edition in light of its SS beauty and warm simplicity. Like the three movements of a sonatina, the painting’s trinity of distinct and separate objects is delightful, yet its unifying structure makes the totality of the composition greater than the sum of ils parts. A cassette (#4053) or CD (#3997) recording of the selections contained in Sonatina Alfoum, beautifully performed by Kim O'Reilly, is available separately.
