1) Scope.
This procedure details the methods and techniques that I.E.M.S.A will apply on
Ammonia /urea ENPC project to perform magnetic particle inspection
2) Reference.
DIN EN 1290.
AD 2000- Merkblatt.
3) Detectable flaws.
The procedure shall be applied to the detection of surface
breaking discontinuities such as: cracks, laps, seams, cold shuts,
laminations & porosity in welded joints and parent material.
4) Method of examination.
Examination shall be carried out using the continuous wet method.
5) Equipment.
A) Magnet:
- A.1 Portable ac yoke : magna flux y-6 ac electromagnet
Note: Permanent magnets shall not be used to perform the magnetic particles
inspection. Also the calibration certificate to be valid and
(Yearly carrying out).
- A.2 The ac electromagnet shall be capable of lifting 4.5 kg load at the maximum
pole spacing to be used during inspection.
B) Background paint and ink :
- B.1 NEO PAINT-NPT 16-ULTRA-FINE or equivalent background pain shall be
used.
It shall be premixed loose or in aerosol containers.
Note :
1. Athin, uniform, coating of the A/M white contrast paint may be applied to the
examination surface before performing the examination.
This is to enhance the color contrast of selected particles.
2. The paint shall be flat white, quick drying and the film thickness shall not
exceed 0.05 mm.
-B.2 NEOCOL B -BLACK MAGNETIC INK or equivalent magnetic ink Shall be
used.
It shall be premixed in aerosol containers.

- B.3
Field magnetic particles examination shall be performed using minimum of
377 lUX of white light illumination.
Where the examination in area of uncontrolled lighting are considered field
examination
For the shop or bench inspection the required inspection white light shall be
1076 lUX
6) Examination procedure:
A) Pre-examination:
Testing shall be performed no sooner than 48 hr. After weld completion.
The item to be examined shall be at ambient temperature.
B) Surface preparation:
The surface to be tested shall be thoroughly cleaned at least 25 mm either side of
the zone to be examined.
All rust, spatter, slag, scale loose material, grease and moisture shall be removed
by brushing, grinding, wiping or solvent cleaning as necessary. The temperature of
the surface shall not exceed 57c
A thorough visual examination shall then be made to assess weld form and the
presence of unacceptable defects.
C) Application of the contrast paint:
Contrast paint shall be applied as a thin even layer extending at least 25 mm
beyond the zone being examined and allowed to dry.
D) Magnetization & ink application:
The yoke is positioned in intimate contact with the piece being examined and
energized.
With the yoke continuously energized ink is sprayed on to the test surface between
the poles of the yoke.
Excess ink may be blown from the area being examined to improve defect
evaluation adjacent examination area shall overlap min. 10%
E) Orientation of magnet and magnetization direction:
1)
In separate examination steps the poles are firstly set across the
weld axis and examination performed as stated in figure D .
2)
The poles are then repositioned perpendicular to the first
examination and examination performed as stated in figureD .
