Fellow members of the Student Body at Florida State University,
The Interfraternity Council at Florida State University is in complete agreement and full support
of the statement that was released yesterday by the Student Government Association and student
leaders that met with President Thrasher and Dr. Coburn.
As members of the Interfraternity Council we too are hurt, angered, and embarrassed that the
actions of former members of the Tau Kappa Epsilon chapter here at Florida State were
incongruent with the values of our Greek community. We strive daily to uphold the values of our
organizations and university. We hold ourselves to a higher standard than what was represented
by the actions of a few.
We recognize the difficult path that lies ahead. We will continue to create a more caring and
inclusive community. Oppressive acts tear down the bridges that exist between councils and
within our community. While we aspire to be a progressive and inclusive community, where
everyone is completely united, respected, and loved, we realize we have many challenges to face
in order to reach our potential.
As a council we plan to attend the Open Dialogue on Monday, February 29, 2016. We also
pledge to continue leading community conversations, enhancing our understanding of inclusion
and social justice, and providing the necessary knowledge and resources to our members in order
to eradicate oppressive thoughts and behaviors.
We recognize this is an important moment to join together and strengthen our council and
university. We are confident in the ability of Florida State students, faculty and staff to move our
community forward.
