Last Sunday, we meditated on the Covenant that

God made with the people of Israel. The Covenant
was a solemn agreement between God and the
people of Israel. Moses spelt out for the people
their duties and obligations. God would protect
them and bring them much glory and peace.
Three Apostles were able to witness the
transfiguration of Jesus and the glory that was
granted to Him. We would also be transformed like
Christ, if we keep our Covenant with God.
In todays Old Testament Reading God reveals His
Name to Moses and appoints him to be the chosen
Leader of the people of Israel.
In the Gospel, Jesus attacks the Pharisees for not
accepting Him. It appears that Jesus was pretty
upset, because they refused to believe in Him. He
tells them in absolute terms that unless they
repented, they would not be included in the
Kingdom of God.

Saint Paul warns us and advises us to follow the

story of the forty years of hardship and journey of
the people of Israel. They were stubborn and stiffnecked. They were punished for it. We must make
use of this time of Lent, to truly repent and keep
Gods commandments. Fr Sebastian

Lenten Penance Service

St. Agnes of Bohemia
(1205-1282)
Feast Day March 2

St. Agnes was born in 1200 in Prague, the

daughter of King Ottocar and Queen
Constance of Hungary, a relative of St.
Elizabeth. As a child she was educated in the
Cistercian convent of Treinitz and was
betrothed to Emperor Frederick II of
Germany . She refused this marriage, which
angered Frederick, but in time he came to
understand her decision, remarking: "If she
had left me for a mortal man, I would have
taken vengeance with the sword, but I cannot
take offense because in preference to me she
has chosen the King of Heaven." Later, Agnes
built a hospital for the poor and a residence
for the friars, she financed the construction
of a Poor Clare monastery in Prague. In 1236,
she and seven other noblewomen entered
this monastery. Known for her kindness,
Agnes mended clothes for the lepers, cooked
meals for the monastery, and cared for the
sick.

How do you feel

when someone
who's
been
hurtful, cruel, or
morally corrupt
gets hit with a
hardship
that
makes them suffer? Our natural tendency is to rejoice
because justice has finally
been meted out.
Jesus addresses this in todays Gospel. He wants us to
understand that we cannot
truthfully say that someone is
a "greater sinner", even if
that person is doing more
damage, is more unChristian, or doing more evil.

Every person has been created in the image of God,

Friday March 4
even the worst ones. Those
Hosea 14:2-10
who display an opposite imPs 81:6-11,14,17
age are nonetheless loved
Mark 12:28-34
by Jesus Christ, who died for
them. Its a tragedy that they
Saturday March 5
do not live as the person
Hosea 6:1-6
God created them to be. But
Ps 51:3-4,18-21
an even worse tragedy is for
Luke 18:9-14
no one to invite them to turn
to Christ by loving them as he loves them.
No person is an evil person. Evil-doers are children of
God living in ignorance of their true identity. They are
victims of evil and were seduced by it into believing
that it's the best way to live. They don't understand
that they can be healed by the Sinless One who conquered evil for their redemption.
We should feel sorry for them -- this is the gift of mercy. We should mourn with Jesus for the tragedy that
continues within their souls -- this is the most precious
gift of mercy.

All those who have

sinned against you
are like the fig tree
in Jesus' parable. If
you have access to
them, he
wants
you to till their soil
and fertilize their
souls with love and
with the Gospel as
taught by your actions and, when
theyre ready, by your words.
Notice that Jesus doesn't want us to
keep a diseased, disintegrating tree
in the garden forever. After (and only
after) we have done everything possible, if the evil-doer does not want
to change, the best care we can give
to the garden is to cut down the tree.
This means walking away or calling
in the authorities for intervention and
letting the sinner reap what he sows.
This, too, is very loving. Fallen trees
become mulch and enrich the
ground for a new beginning.

Reflect & Discuss:

1. Who has been so hurtful that you
wish God would punish them?
2. Can you feel sorry for them?
Can you pray for God to do good
for them? In the Sacrament of
Reconciliation, ask for God's
help in feeling more concerned
about them. In this, you'll find
freedom from the anger that has
been holding you captive.
3. What steps can be taken to fertilize the lives of the problematic
people of your parish or family?
4. How do you know when it's time
to continue trying and when it's
time to chop the tree down?
