With cold and wet weather, continuing to remain in the forecast, our
students have done a great job remembering to wear proper clothing
to stay warm and dry. Please send in a pair of shoes that may be left
at school to be used as indoor shoes only, if you havent already done
so. DRY SHOES are required to prevent slips and falls and to keep our
carpets clean. Also, please dont forget to check your childs backpack
for any wet clothing items that they may have (usually placed in their
change of clothes bag). If they did use their spare clothes, please
resend the clothing that was used (i.e. sock/jeans). This will save time
and help prevent you from having to make unnecessary trips to the
school to drop off dry clothing.
Thanks to all of the parents who came out to see their teachers during
our Parent/Teacher interview times. Also thank you for being so
actively involved with your childs learning!
In Language Arts, we will continue with the WRITE TRAITS program
that students use from Grades 1 to 8. There are 6 traits of writing
that we will be reviewing and/or focusing on (i.e. Ideas, Organization,
Voice, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency and Conventions). Since our
focus will be on writing Narratives, we will be putting a special
emphasis on Ideas, Voice and Word Choice. We will be learning
about how to tell stories in interesting ways by:
writing about things we know
including lots of action to engage our audience
describing our experiences using descriptive language
(sounds more like you and not a textbook).
In reading we continue our unit on Fairy Tales with our focus being
on story mapping (i.e. Characters, Setting, Problem, Resolution and
Conclusion).
Students will continue to engage in Daily 5 activities during our
Guided Reading times (i.e. Read to Self, Read to Others, Word Work,
Writing and Listening to Reading). During Word Work times, students
continue to practice English language rules (i.e. spelling, punctuation,
complete sentences, neat handwriting, contractions) through games
and word activities taught during our Literacy Block.
Recently, our class took a trip to the Ciociaro Club to participate in a
Literacy Session called Yours for the Dreaming. Here, our students
had a chance to meet Kay Douglas (a local author). They had the
opportunity to participate in a literacy workshop that inspired them to
become better writers by dreaming of endless possibilities. Thank you
to all of our parent volunteers who gave up their time to come on this
trip with us. Your help was greatly appreciated!
In Math/Science (Building Structures) we have built our 3D castles
using everyday 3D materials found at home (ie. Kleenex boxes, paper
towel rolls, cereal boxes). Thank you to parents/students who sent in so
many materials to work with! Also, a big thank you goes out to
Mr. Campeau who oversaw the building of these fantastic structures.
We were also fortunate enough to have Roseland Tweets sent out
with group photos of 2Hs creations early last week. Our students
group castles will be on display for the rest of the month if you would
like to see them. They are located on tables just outside the Media
Room in Hall 1. We are very proud of our students efforts and
creativity!
