Procedures

Teach: Start by introducing examples of different

The Agenda

agendas used for meetings and explain that everyday our

class will have the agenda posted. Tell students they will
look at the agenda at the beginning of each day to see
what we will be learning with each objective. Their will
also be an opening assignment posted with the agenda
that students should begin working on as soon as they are
seated. After the opening assignment then I (the teacher)
will go through the agenda with the whole class.
Rehearse: Have students practice coming into the
classroom and begin their start of the day routine.
Emphasize that the agenda will always be posted before
students enter classroom in the same place. The is no
need to ask What are we doing next? Direct students to
look at the agenda and begin their opening assignment.
Reinforce: Refer to the agenda and lesson objective
throughout day. During first few weeks of school draw
attention to agenda when transitioning so students make
connection that there is a routine and no surprises. Point
out that students can help substitutes by referring them to
the class agenda.

Teach: As students enter classroom show them

An Opening
Assignment

where the opening assignment is posted with all

the directions needed to complete it. Tell them
that the opening assignment is independent work.
After students have had a few minutes to complete
the assignment explain that a new opening
assignment will be posted in the same location
each time they come to class.
Rehearse: As students work on their first opening
assignment praise them for following the
procedure correctly. Remind students on the
second day about the opening assignment and to
start immediately. Commend students who are
following procedure and redirect students as
needed.
Reinforce: Observe and comment on how
students are working on their opening
assignments. Thank class for following procedure.
Help students individually who are struggling.

Teach: Show students the notes from home box on my

Collecting Notes &

Forms

desk. Explain that this is where all notes from home

will be turned in. List permissible items and show
where they can reference the list if they have
questions. Tell students that notes from home should
be dropped off as soon as students enter classroom.
Explain that homework, projects and tests do not go in
the notes from home basket.
Rehearse: Distribute cards to students with
appropriate/inappropriate types of papers. Then have
students reenter classroom with their cards and
determine if it needs to be turned into the notes from
home basket. Then go through notes in the basket as
the class and discuss whether or not they
should/shouldnt go in the basket. Practice as many
times as needed. On the day before a form is due
remind students where their note from home should be
turned in.
Reinforce: The first time I collect a note form home I
thank the class for following the procedure and explain
how easy it is for me to respond to parents notes.

Teach: Walk students step by step

Organizing Homework

through the process of how the folder

works, where to put finished and
unfinished homework, and how they will
retrieve it from there backpacks and
then return it at the end of the day. I will
model each of the steps as I go.
Rehearse: After I have explained I will
have students practice the procedure
with fake finished and unfinished
homework.
Reinforce: During the first few weeks of
school I will remind students about to
use the procedure as well as compliment
students who do a good job.

Teach: The STOP strategy for managing

Keeping Students On
Task

student behavior is used as a last resort, so

it will not be formally introduced to
students until normal signals are not
working. At that time I would write stop on
the board and explain that each time the
classroom is off task I will cross out a
letter. When all letters are crossed off we
will stop the activity and move on to a
quiet learning activity. As letters are
marked be sure to quite students and draw
their attention to the STOP on the board.
Do not lecture!
Rehearse: There is no rehearsal this
strategy is implemented in real time!
Reinforce: The next day attempt activity
again and expect to see improvement!

Teach: Show student the Finish Early

Finishing Work Early

chart and explain after they have

completed their assigned work they need
to check this chart and follow the
instructions in sequential order while
they wait for classmates. Explain that it
may change throughout the year so make
sure to always check!
Rehearse: Watch students as they finish
independent work and acknowledge
those who are on following procedure
and smile and point to chart to redirect
students who are off task.
Reinforce: At the end of independent
work time praise class for using their
time effectively.

Teach: Tell students that when I flash

Classroom Transitions

the lights twice that means it is time

to transition to the next activity.
Explain that I will set a timer for 1
minute in which students can prepare
for the next activity.
Rehearse: Have student pretend to
work on assignment, then flash lights
and give instructions to prepare for
the next activity. Announce the setting
of the timer and finish the trial
transition. Repeat if necessary.
Reinforce: Remind students of the cue
first few days and monitor and praise
progress.

Teach: Introduce the verbal command

Getting Students
Attention

that you will use to get students

attention and tell them the expected
response. Explain that by responding
back the expectation is that the student
will stop what they are doing, have eyes
on the teacher, and listen for
instructions.
Rehearse: Have students practice
repeating appropriate response, then
have students pretend to work/talk and
practice using the verbal attention getter
again.
Reinforce: Thank the class for coming to
attention so quickly. Praise them at the
end of the day for following procedure.

Classroom Jobs
Teach: Explain to students that the classroom is
a community that everyone is responsible for
taking care of. Every day there are 5 particular
jobs that one student will be responsible for
making sure each gets done. Explain that every
student will have and opportunity to do every
job by the end of the year. Introduce jobs and
explain how students will rotate through them.
Rehearse: Role play doing the jobs correctly.
Reinforce: Build time into schedule to
accomplish jobs. Gently remind when necessary.

Teach: Introduce how students will be

Class Discussions

called on to participate in discussion. Then

introduce the talking tool and how it is
used. Explain the importance of curtesy and
respect for whomever is speaking. Go over
what that looks like and what it doesnt. At
the start of a class discussion hold tool and
introduce topic then encourage students to
participate according to the procedure.
Rehearse: Review steps before discussion,
and practice making sure every student has
had the opportunity to participate.
Reinforce: Redirect and comment as
necessary and always thank students for
holding a respectful & interesting
discussion.

Teach: Explain Cornell Note-

Note Taking

Taking Method: Record,

Reduce, Review. Then teach
lesson and model how to take
notes using the method.

and ask students about each
step in the process. Then have
them cover the review and ask
them to summarize
thoughts/concepts from the
Reduce section.
Reinforce: Regularly review
note taking process. Emphasize
importance of being organized.

Teach: Introduce students to

Reading a Textbook

SQ4R (Survey, Question, Read,

Recite, Review, Reflect) method
and discuss how it helps them
gain and retain information.
Show them how to use the
SQ4R Guide.
Rehearse: Have students work
in partners to quiz each other
about the text and use their
SQ4R notes to locate answers.
Monitor and redirect as
needed.
Reinforce: Continue to use the
pairing technique until students
feel confident in using the
process on their own.

Teach: Explain test taking procedure

Taking a Test

and refer to the Testing Procedure

Chart that is posted during test time to
remind students of the expectations
and procedure.
Rehearse: Model for students what
their how to indicate they are done (by
turning paper over in top right corner)
And remind students to attend to the
classroom agenda when finished.
Reinforce: On day of the first test
review the test-taking procedure
again. Go over agenda and remind
students of their responsibilities after
they have completed the test.

Teach: Have a classroom discussion to

Cultivating Social
Skills

about manners and respectful interaction.

Develop a general list of social skills with
students then have them work in groups
to come up with a short skit that models
the right and wrong way for each skill.
Choose a social skill each day following to
focus on throughout a lesson and review
afterwards how it affected the classroom
environment.
Rehearse: Role play and/or practice skills
every day until they become routine. Work
closely with struggling individuals.
Reinforce: Acknowledge the class for
using good social skills and encourage
them to continue on a regular basis.

Teach: Show the students the HALL

poster. Explain that this is where

students will line up and then point out
each section of the poster that explains
hallway expectations. Model for the
students how to get in line and wait for
instruction. Explain the reason for calm
quite hallways.
Rehearse: Practice lining up and
walking through the hallway correctly
then returning to seats.
Reinforce: Watch students and thank
when they do a good job. Gently remind
students who are off task of the HALL
procedure and redirect as necessary.

Teach: Have a welcome folder

New Student

information about the class, list
of supplies needed, and
welcome letter. Train students
how to be New Student
