Reading Passage

Module 7

One of the most difficult questions to answer is how much a person should earn. We
naturally expect that a doctor's salary will be higher than a bus driver's. But the question
becomes much more difficult to answer when we compare a miner with an engineer, or a
fisherman sailing in the cold North Sea with a teacher in a secondary school. What the doctor,
the engineer and the teacher have in common is that they have spent several years of their lives
studying in order to obtain the necessary qualifications for their professions. We feel that this
effort and these years, when they were studying instead of earning money, should be taken into
consideration in their salaries. At the same time, we recognise that the work of the miner and
the fisherman is both hard and dangerous, and that they must be highly paid for the danger
which their jobs have.
There is another important factor: how socially useful a person's work is. Most people
would agree that looking after the sick or teaching children is more important than, for example,
playing football or wearing dresses in a fashion show. However, the nurse and the
schoolteacher earn much less money than the football player and the fashion model with salaries
out of all proportion to their social utility.
In conclusion, although the money that people earn is actually determined by market
forces, we ought to find a way to decide the right salary for every job. If salaries are wrongly
established, the highly-qualified people carrying heavy responsibilities become disillusioned,
and might even end up by emigrating. However, if there is an enormous difference between
salaries, the distance between the rich and the poor will be so great that it will lead to social
tensions and ultimately to violence.
