Thebookbeginswithaforewordthatexplainswhatthebookisgoingtobeabout.Theforeword
includesinformationaboutturningpointsandinformationabouthowthebookisgoingtobe
explained.TheauthoralsoprovidesuswithadefinitionbytheHistorianLouisL.Snyder,ofthe
word,turningpoint.Aturningpointinhistoryisanevent,happening,orstagewhichthruststhe
courseofhistoricaldevelopmentintoadifferentdirection.
Aftertheforeword,theauthorleadsustoanintroduction.Whiletheforewordwasmore
broadaboutturningpoints,theintroductiongivesusaspecificexampleofaturningpoint,
womenssuffrage.Itexplainshowthefeministmovementdidntbeginuntil1848andwasheld
atSenecaFalls.Theauthoralsosympathizedwiththewomenbecauseshestatesthatthe
feministsonlyhadtheoptiontopetition,andmostofthetime,ithadlittleresults.

BriefHistoryoftheWomensSuffrageMovement.ShebeginsbytellingusthatSenecaFalls
contained68feministsandthemovementtooksolong,thatonlyonefeministcouldlivelong
enoughtoseetheamendmentbeingpassed.Then,itexplainstheexpectationsofawoman.
Theywereexpectedtonotbuyorsellproperty,shedidnthavecustodyoftheirchildorchildren
ifthehusbandweretodie,theywerenotallowedtofinishtheireducation,andmostimportantly,
theywerenotallowedtohaveavoice.Inotherwords,theywerenotallowedtovote.Theauthor
alsogivesusanexampleoftwofeministsandtheircontributiontothewomenssuffrage

movement.TheGrimkesisterswerewomenwhotraveledtogivesmallbutencouraging
speechestootherwomen.Butsoonenough,theirspeechesbecamesopowerfulandtouching,
thatthesistersattractedmenaswell.Ontheseconddayoftheconvention,everyonereunited
andsomeresidentsalsojoined,todiscussaboutwomenssuffrage.Italsoexplainshowthe
movementstartedwiththeintentionofjustgettingtherighttovote,butovertime,womenmade
therighttovoteessential,buttheyaddedsomeminorgoalssuchasexpandingtheirproperty
rightsandchangingthedivorcelaws,andmostimportantly,openingmoredoorsforwomens
education.Thebookalsoexplainsthatthereweretwoorganizations,theNationalWoman
SuffrageAssociation(NWSA)andtheAmericanWomanSuffrageAssociation(AWSA).The
differencebetweenbothoftheseorganizationswasthattheybothhaddisagreementsintheir
minorgoals.ButoneofthemainreasonsthatauthorpointedoutwasthatNWSAallowedonly
womentobemembersandtheAWSAallowedbothmenandwomentobemembers.
Eventually,membersofbothorganizationscametotheconclusionthattheywerebetteroff
workingtogethertogettheirmaingoalaccomplished.Thisbenefitedbothorganizations
becausenowtheycouldlearnfromeachotheronhowtoprotestbetterandhowtomanagea
bettercampaign.Afterafewyears,theamountofprotestersbecametoomuchandmorethan
200hundredwomenwerearrested.ButonJanuary9,1918,thepresidentWilsonannouncedto
thepublicthathesupportedthesuffrageamendment.
Thebookthenflowsintothefirstchapterthatgoesmoreintodetailaboutwomens
suffrage.Ithinkthatthegeneraloverviewofwomenssuffragewaswellwrittenanditwasnice
tohaveanexampleofwomenwhoparticipatedinthemovement.Although,itdidhavealotof
detailsandtheforeword,introduction,andthegeneraloverviewcombinedtookalmostonethird
ofthebook.
