PHED 239: High School Module
Worksheet - Chapter 3

Be prepared to discuss in class:

1.
As a physical educator, what are the implications of grouping high school students by
chronological age rather than by developmental level? Give examples.
Some students bodies have matured faster than others at different ages and will have different skill
levels because of this. Some students may not have matured yet in the high school years and it could
set them behind in things like weight training if that is a unit you are covering.
Examples: A freshman who is on the cross country team and a freshman that does no physical activity
and is developmentally behind are both asked to run a mile and run it in the same time. This isnt going
to happen because the person who isnt activity is not going to be physically able to do it and it is then
going to affect their view of PE for the rest of their life.
2.
Share examples (at least one each) of characteristics (physical, social, emotional, and
intellectual) of high school students, and the implications for each trait.
Physical- Some high schoolers are going to be short and seem overweight when you look at them
because they are developmentally behind what their age is. As opposed to some students who have
already matured could have well defined muscles. This is important to notice and you can determine
your groups based on this so the more developed people are with each other.

Social- Students in high school could be very shy. Students may not want to speak up in class when
asked a question so it is best to not put them on the spot. They could write down their answers on an
exit slip instead of speaking out in class. This could be a time where everything is teacher lead if you
have a class that at first is all very shy and not wanting to speak up.
Emotional- Students in high school could have very high emotions and need to succeed in class or else
they get upset. This would be good to know too because you can plan activities where you know they
will succeed and have a lot of extensions down incase that student needs it.
