Building of the Mission
Mission San Juan Bautista started out small, but it
changed quickly into a grand mission. For example, the
style of the mission church is considered to be grand and
large. The entrance to the church had three arches,
which created a large foyer. The arch in the center was
large and the ones on the side were smaller. The size of
the church was very impressive. In fact, it was 188 feet
long, and it was the largest church in Alpha California. In
addition, the interior of the church was also impressive.
The large church was one of the few that actually had
two aisles. The interior walls were painted with native
style designs. The bright colored walls were painted by a
sailor who lived at the mission. Some of the walls were
painted to resemble marble. The beautiful wall behind the
altar has niches that hold statues. The life-sized one of
John the Baptist is especially beautiful. Interestingly, the
missions grand campanario was similar to the one in
Mission San Diego. Although the original church had no
bell tower, a campanario was later added beside the
church. It was large and held nine bells. Most of the bells
were lost, and today the mission has three bells. Two are
original bells and one bell was a gift from Father Lasuens
home town in Spain. In conclusion, although Mission San
Juan Bautista began with mud covered walls and tule
roofs, it quickly became known as an impressive mission.
