DEPARTIENT GF NATURAL RESOURCES OFFICE OF ENVIRONMENTAL AFFAIRS INTER DIVISIONAL CORRESPONDENCE Subject: Meeting with Murphy Oil, Mereaux, Louisiana 01-10-80 are | oare [ranoor ATTENTION weo | rwo | av From: Gus Von Bodungen, P. E. eve, Air Quality Division fmb: To: FILE Le. John Sharp and Gus Von Bodungen of the Office of Environmental Affairs, Air Quality Division met with Mr. Dave Thomas and Mr. Alden Frederickson of Murphy O11, Mereaux, Louisiana to discuss odor problems from Flomaton Crude. About two weeks ago some sour crude leaked into the separator. The leak was repaired. The Flonaton crude was caught in the API separator. It took about two days to clean it out. : Murphy has to draw water off the crude tanks soon and it goes through the separator. The Pace Engineering Company has evaluated the system and is supposed to come up with some techniques to be used to reduce odors. Murphy is looking at a mask or neutralizer to tie up the sour odors. There are two sludge dewatering basins. They stink when they are cleared out, twice a year. The latest odor problem has been solved. The cleanout of the sludge dewatering basins is planned (one new, one half full) for five or six months from now. Flow through API Separator 1100 gallons per minute total. 500 gallons per minute from clarified water system. Remainder boiler blowdown. Remainder crude desalter, water wash towers. Every two weeks they drain water off ZUrdé tanks. (four tanks of 200,000 barrels each). Meeting with Murphy O11 Company January 10, 1! Page 2 We reconmend that sludge dewatering basin be cleaned out in February or some equally convenient time when weather conditions are favorable. Murphy will cal] the next time drawn off crude tanks (sour) so we can have an observer on hand. Murphy may have a mask or reagent at that time.
