The Profession with a Future
What the profession offers :
Opportunities to grow as individual professional and to make meaningful contributions to
the Society are vital considerations in selecting one’s career. In the present context of
rapid social, economic and technological changes in our country, qualifications based on
multi-disciplined methodology provide the best prospects and competitive advantages.

Industrial Engineering, which has emerged as a full-fledged profession in our country during
the last five decades, offers the most rewarding career. It is a multi-disciplined approach to
achieve higher productivity through optimum utilization of resources in any organisation
and to meet the emerging Challenges of Globalization of our Economy. The contribution of
Industrial Engineering is very well recognized and now it is being called upon to play an
even more significant role. The future of Industrial Engineering is bright in every sector of
our economy.

Definition of Industrial Engineering

“Industrial Engineering is concerned with the design, improvement and installation of


integrated systems of men, materials and equipment. It draws upon specialized knowledge
and skill in the mathematical, physical and social sciences together with the principles
and methods of engineering analysis and design to specify, predict and evaluate the results
to be obtained from such systems”.

The Institution

The Industrial Engineering discipline has been fostered and developed in our country by the
Professional Institution, the Indian Institution of Industrial Engineering, founded as early as
1957. During the last four decades and more, the Institution has been consistently doing
extensive and pioneering work in disseminating, fostering, developing and advancing the
discipline and profession of Industrial Engineering in our country.

Industrial Engineering in the context of Globalisation

Industrial Engineering provides the best means for evolving effective strategies and efficient
means for meeting any challenge and giving a thrust for development.

Industrial Engineer can play an important role in an organisation for smoothly progressing
transiting into medium term plans from short term plans and from medium term plans into
long term plans.

II. INDIAN INSTITUTION OF


INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING (IIIE)
2.1 Background

Founded in 1957, the Indian Institution of Industrial Engineering is a non-profit organization


for the profession of Industrial Engineering in lndia consisting of members specialized in
the areas of Work Study, O & M., Production Planning & Control, Materials Management,
Value Engineering, PERT/CPM, Operations Research, Computer Sciences, Financial
Management, Statistical Quality Control etc. and other emerging disciplines. It has been
espousing and contributing to Productivity, Quality movement and Cost Competitiveness
and other emerging needs of Undertakings in the country during the last four decades.

2.2 Objectives

The Institution has the following objectives :

s To advance the general welfare of mankind through the resources and creative abilities
of the profession.

s To establish and maintain a National Headquarters for providing adequate administrative


and supervising support to the activities, and to establish a network of chapters spread
over the country with the same objectives.

s To provide facilities for the unrestricted dissemination of knowledge and information


relating to the profession among the professionals and the public in general by :

(i) conducting and/or participating in meetings, seminars, discussions, lectures,


conferences, public meetings, film exhibitions, radio or television broadcasting;

(ii) preparing, editing, printing, publishing, circulating, acquiring, selling or otherwise


distributing such journals, periodicals, books. papers, leaflets, films and mechanical
and other models and equipments as the Institution may deem desirable for the
promotion of its objectives.

(iii) establishing,formulating and maintaining offices, libraries, exhibitions, collections


and displays of literature, statistics, exhibits and information relating to industrial
Engineering and allied disciplines.

s To promote understanding of the profession in the fields of business, industry and public
administration and among educational, research and professional bodies in (India and

abroad by means of visits, discussions, advice and all other forms of co-operation and
joint endeavor.

s To develop the profession as an effective tool of managemant in all spheres of the


economy by :

(i) expanding the existing knowledge;

(ii) encouraging the development of new techniques;

(iii) adapting the techniques to suit Indian conditions;

(iv) initiating new app!ications;

(v) spotlighting future needs;

(vi) offering and carrying out advisory and consultancy services to industry, government,
educational and all other institutions engaged in human endeavor, achieving benefits
from optimization of resource utilization and furthering the boundaries of Industrial
Engineering and allied sciences;

(vii) and by other means

s To foster, assist and conduct education and research in subjects re!ated to the
profession by :

(i) instituting programmes of studies;

(ii) conducting training courses, formalised instruction programmes;

(iii) setting standards of qualification;

(iv) conducting professional examinations;

(v) sponsoring institution or conducting research programmes, technical surveys etc.

(vi) assisting colleges, universities, and other institutions in the development of important
educational programmes in professional subjects:

s To ensure professional standing by :

(i) promotion of ethical professional practice.

(ii) fostering of a high degree of integrity among the members of the profession;

s To institute a Chair in Industrial Engineering Studies in Universities/Institutes/ Colleges.


To confer titles, diplomas, certificates, prizes, scholarships etc. and professional
qualifications.

s To provide a forum for the individuals and organizations interested in the profession and
to fulfill the need of a united national professional organization in India.

s To recognize eminent professional men and women for their contribution and services
by conferring Honours and Awards on them.

2.3 Organization

Membership of the Institution is spread all over India, and today the strength is over six
thousand individual members and over 200 organizational members. It has Twenty Four
Chapters (Centres) catering to the needs of the members, spread over the country. The
Chapters are responsible for formulating and furthering their own programme of activities
within the framework of Memorandum of Association, Rules and Regulations (formerly
known as Constitution and Bye-laws) of the Institution. Presently, there are Chapters at
Allahabad, Bangalore, Baroda, Bhilai, Bhopal, Kolkatta, Chennai, Cochin, Coimbatore,
Cuttack, Durgapur, Hyderabad, Jamshedpur, Kanpur, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Pune,
Ranchi, Rourkela, Trichirapally, Trivandrum, Visakhapatanam & Udaipur.

A National Council consisting of twelve elected representative from among Corporate


Members and six representatives from the Chapters is the Executive body of the Institution
which is located in Navi Mumbai. The office bearers - A Chairman, two Vice-Chairmen, an
Hon. Secretary, two Hon. Jt. Secretaries and an Hon. Treasurer for each year are elected
by the National Council from among its members.

President of the Institution is nominated by the National Council each year.

2.4 Membership

There are three classes of Corporate Membership, viz. Fellow, Member and Associate
Member. Other classes of membership are : (i) Honorary Membership conferred by the
National Council in recognition of outstanding services in the fields of Industrial Engineering
and Management Sciences (ii) Affiliate (iii) Graduate (iv) Student and (v) Institutional
Mernbership.

2.5 MAJOR ACTIVITIES

A. Graduateship Examination

To foster, assist and conduct education in the profession, the Institution conducts the

Graduateship Programme. The Examination will specially enable Diploma Holders in


Engineering, University Graduates, persons with HSC Qualification and having specialised
working experience to qualify and enter the profession of Industrial Engineering.

B. Group Activities

Besides conducting a professional Examination in Industrial Engineering, the Institution


takes a leading part in arranging meetings, lectures, seminars, business games, symposia
and discussion groups etc., for furtherance and dissemination of knowledge. Annual
Conventions and Conferences are held where Industrial Engineers and professional
executives from Industry, Business, Government, Higher Educational Institutions, Utilities
etc meet and present papers, exchange information and help in professional enlargement
and growth.

C. Journal

The Institution brings out a monthly Journal entitled “Industrial Engineering Journal”. The
Journal as the official organ of the Institution is a medium of communication among members
and dissemination of information of new developments in the field of lndustrial Engineering.
It publishes papers and articles relating to application of industrial engineering and
managernent techniques, including research work.

The journal also publishes official notifications of the Institution including those relating to
the Graduateship Examination. These notifications pertaining to the Examination shall be
deemed to be offical individual intimation to the student Members.

III. GRADUATESHIP EXAMINATION


IN
INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING
General Information
and Scheme of Examination

3.1 Introduction

The Institution conducts Graduateship Examination as an external Examination for enabling

candidates to qualify for GRADUATE MEMBERSHIP of the institution.

Over 2,200 persons have qualified for the Examination and about 100 qualify every year.

3.2 Recognition of the Graduateship Examinatlon

A pass in the Graduateship Examination is recognized by the Government of India at par

with a Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Engineering from a recognized Indian University for

the purpose of recruitment to superior posts and services under the Central Government.

The Official ccmmunication dated 20th April 1978, conveying the recongnition is reproduced

on the next page.

Later, the Ministry of Education and Social Welfare (Dept. of Education) was absorbed

into a new Ministry, Ministry of HumanResources Development.

The Ministry of Human Resources Development later divested itself of the function of

Recognition and transfered the same to All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE),

a newly created autonomous body. On reference to AICTE, the Council has referred us

back to MHRD for Recognition - And our examination already has the Ministry’s Recognition.

Many major companies in India have recognised this graduateship examination for favour

of promotions, higher increments etc.

The Institution of Engineers (India) Kolkata has decided to recognize the Graduateship

Examination of IIIE vide their letter (EEA/Ad/03(B) 1.04.2005.

In continuation of this Ministry’s O M. even number dated 7th July 1975, the undersigned
is directed to state that, on the recommendations of the Board of Assessmet for
Educational Oualifications, the Government of India have decided to recognise a pass in
Graduateship Examination of the Indian Institution of Industrial Engineering, Bombay, at
par with a Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Engineering from a recognised Indian University
for the purpose of recruitment to superior posts and services under the Central Government.

3.3 Admission Requirements

The Examinations are open only to the Student Members of the Institution, whose
membership continue to remain valid.

The requirements for eligibility to student Membership of the Institution are:-

A person should not be less than 18 years of age and should possess one of the following
qualifications :
a) A pass in the Higher Secondary (XII Standard) Examination under the 10 + 2 + 3
Scheme of Education, of a Statutory Board of Higher Secondary Education, the
Intermediate Examination, recognised as equivalent thereto and has at least two
years working experience in an organisation.
b) completed and passed first two years of regular degree course in Engineering /
Technology.
c) A Graduate in Arts, Science, Commerce etc, and has at least one year working
experience in an organisation.
d) A Diploma (3 yrs course) in Engineering/Technology recognized by the concerned
Director of Technical Education and at least one year working experience in an
organisation. In case, a candidate has undergone 1 year service training as a part
of the course recongnised by Board of Apprenticeship Training, Govt. of India. this
will be counted as working experience.

e) A Degree in Engineering / Technology of a University in India or equivalent qualification


recognised by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) as equivalent

Note : A candidate should have experience in an organisation as mentioned under (a), (c)
& (d) after passing the qualifying examination. Working experience should be exclusive of
the period if any spent in training as part of the qualifying educational programme.

The person should also abide by the Rules and Regualtions laid down by the Institution for
Student Members and his / her membership should continue to remain valid by timely
clearance of all his / her dues.

A person cannot continue as student member beyond 9 years.

3.4. The Scheme and Subjects of the examination :

The Examinations consist of three parts of written papers viz. the Preliminary, the Section A and the
Section B. In addition, a project work has to be undertaken and Report submitted. A student can
appear for Section A papers only after completely passing the preliminary (or exempted from the
preliminary). For appearance in a section, a student must have passed the previous section fully.

The Written Examinations are held twice a year in January and July in centres all over India.

B. PROJECT WORK

The Student will have to carry out an approved project in an organisation under a project
guide. A Project Report has to be submitted to the Board of Examinations after the completion
of the Project, for its acceptance.

The student is considered to have completed the Graduateship Examination only after his/
her Project Report has been accepted by the Board of Examinations

3.5 Exemptions
Students can apply for grant of exemptions which they feel they are entitled to. Exemptions
will be granted only on application by the student and upon scrutiny of the students’
qualifications. Application form for exemption is appended in this brochure and list of papers
for which exemption, based on qualification can be considered are given below.

Application for grant of exemptions must be accompanied by the prescribed fee for each
part and all the necessary documentary evidence of qualifications. etc. in the same manner
as required for application of Student Membership of the Institution.

Wherever considered necessary, BOE may ask the student to furnish further details like
Syllabus, Scheme of examinations, mark list, question papers etc. regarding the qualifications
on which the student bases his/her claims.

The following exemptions may be considered for the Diploma/Degree etc. as shown below
against each qualification.

IV. MAIN REGULATIONS


4.1. Student Membership

The Examinations are open only for the Student Members of the Institution and who do not
owe dues to the Institution
The details of enrollment are given in chapter VI
A Student member is expected to maintain adequate progress and complete Graduate
Examination (including project work) within a period of NINE years (see also a later section

on ‘Automatic Termination of Student Membership’)


4.2 Attachment to Institution’s Chapter
On enrolment, a Student Members will be attached to the local Chapter (if there is one) for
enabling him/her to participate in its activities. The Chapters would also endeavour to
provide assistance to Student Members.
4.3. Coaching Classes
The Institution has no arragement for coaching or postal tution. Any coaching class organised
by any individual or organisation without due permission from Board of Examinations (BOE),
will be illegal
4.4. Examination Eligibility :
a) The examination is open to members of the Institution who do not owe any dues to the
institution and have also paid there membership dues for that current year.
b) A student must have passed Preliminary Examination to be eligible for admission to
section ‘A’ Examination.
4.5 Payment :
a) A student must have passed Section ‘A’ Examination to be eligible for admission to Section ‘B’
Examination.
b) All Correspondence and remittances by the student are to be addressed directly to the National

4.6. Time limit for Enrolment and Application for Examination.

The examinations are held twice in a year in January and July as shown below at various
chapters and non-chapter centres determined by the Board of Examinations.

4.7. Time Limit for Applying for Exemptions

The following time limit will be applicable for receiving applications for exemptions from
papers of the Graduateship Examination.

Students intending to take January Examination in any year should apply for exemption
before 15th September of the previous year and for the July Examination the students
should comply with this requirement before 15th March of that year.

To avoid delay, students are advised to apply for exemption along with their applications
for membership itself.

4.8. Validity of Exemption Granted


The exemption granted is valid for a period of 4 years only from the date of admission.
When a partial exemption is granted either from Preliminary or SectionA, the student must
complete the remaining papers of Preliminary or Section-A as the case may be within 4
years from the date of Admission.

4.9. Examination Centres


The Centres of the Examination will be annonced from time to time in the Industrial
Engineering Journal.

The Examination will not be held at a Centre where less than 30 students opt to appear.
Students will be required in their applications for admission to the Examination to opt for
three alternative Centres (from the Centres mentioned below) in the order of preference.

4.11. Observance of Discipline by Student-Members


Student Members are bound by and shall observe the provisions of the Memorandum of
Association and Rules & Regulations of the Institution.

4.12 Use of Unfair Means


Students found using unfair means at or during the examination, are liable for disciplinary
action in the following manner :
1) The students would be expelled from the Examination Hall instantly.
2) The result of the students would be treated as cancelled.
3) They would not be permitted to appear for the subsequent examinations(s) as may be
decided.
4) The maximum penalty in such cases, depending upon the gravity of the offence, would
result in debarring the student permanently from appearing for examinations by cancel-
ling his Student Membership
5) The BOE reserves the right to report the students indulgence in unfair means to his
employer.
The decision of the BOE on any matter pertaining to the use of unfair means by students at or in
connection with the Examinations shall be final.

4.13. Standards of Passing


A student can appear and clear papers of a section in one or more attempts but within the
prescribed time limit (see later section on ‘Automatic Termination of Student Membership)
For each examination, the student can choose the papers he/she wants to appear (or
reappear)
The passing marks in any paper shall be 45% of the maximum marks. There will be no
separate requirement regarding aggregate marks to pass the Examination Preliminary,
Section A or Section B. Obtaining a pass in any paper will exempt the students from
further appearance in the same paper for the Examination. The standards for acceptance
of the Project Report are given in the Syllabus alongwith other details pertaining to project
work. Grant of medals and other awards will be governed by the rules relating to them.
4.14. Results of Examination
The student will be intimated of the marks obtained by him/her in the papers in which he/
she appears and whether he/she passed in those papers. A consolidated mark list for all
the subjects of the examination indicating all exemptions granted and marks obtained will
be issued only to the students passing the Graduateship Examination completely.

4.15 Verification of Marks


If a student wishes that the marks obtained by him/her in any paper should be verified, he/
she should apply within fifteen days from the date of issue of intimation of the results with
a fee Rs. 100/- per paper.

There is no provision for reassessment of the answer paper but only a verification will be
carried out. Wherever a mistake is found as a result of the verification. the fee will be
refunded. The decision of the BOE will be final in all cases.

4.16 Completion of Graduateship Examination


On completion of the Graduateship Examination (i.e. after the student has passed the
Section B Examination and after his/her Project Report has been accepted) the student
qualifies to be elected as a Graduate Member of the Institution and to a Certificate thereof.

4.17 Awards
The Institution has instituted a Gold Medal for the outstanding student in the Graduateship
Examination and two silver medals. The Gold Medal known as S.P. Hatte Gold Medal is
named after the late S.P. Hatte, one of the pioneers of the Institution. The awards are
given for every examination.

Kerala Chapter of the Institution is the benefactor of the Gold Medal to be awarded to the
student ranking First in the Graduateship Examination held in January every year. The
Gold Medal to be awarded to the Student ranking First in the Graduateship Examination
held in July every year is donated by the Bombay Chapter of the Institution.

Scheme and Regulations

REGULATIONS (AWARDS)

1. No formal ‘class obtained’ is given in the Consolidated Mark Sheet or Final Certifi-
cate.
2. However, with respect to students completing the Section-B in January 2004 ex-
amination or later the following correspondences will apply.
Percentage from Total Marks Equivalent Class
60% and above First Class
50% to less than 60% Second Class
45% to less than 50% Pass Class
3. The percentage from Total Marks will be reckoned as follows
a) All the papers that the student had appeared for in Preliminary, Section-A and
Section-B papers will be taken into account.
b) The percentage concerned will be the percentage of the total of the marks
obtained by the student in all the papers the student had to appear to the total
of the maximum marks of these papers.
4. The Institution awards medals to the first three students from each examination
from amongst the students who complete Section-B in that examination. The fol-
lowing criteria will govern the selection of the students for these medals, with effect
from January 2004 examination.
a) The student must have passed in every one of the papers in his / her first
attempt (if a student has registered for a particular paper in section-B but does
not appear for the paper it will not be counted as an attempt for that paper) and
the student must complete the Project Work requirement within one year of
the publication of the result of the concerned examination.
b) The student must have submitted the Project Report within one year of the
publication of the result of the concerned examination and the Project Report
should have been accepted.
c) From the list of students who qualify under (a) and (b) above the three students
obtaining the first three highest percentage will be listed.
d) The student obtaining the highest percentage will be declared the ‘BEST
STUDENT’
and awarded the S.P. Hatte Gold Medal.
e) The students obtaining the Second and Third Higher Percentage will be awarded
a Silver Medal each.
f) The BOE will notify to the students who secure the first six positions in order of
merit, among students who complete section B examination and are eligible to
be considered for the prize under clause 4 (a) above. Of the qualifying persons,
the first three will be chosen.

5. Award from the Industrial Engineering Journal.


The students are encouraged to prepare a paper from their accepted Project Report and
submit it to the Industrial Engineering Journal for consideration of Publication.
The Journal considers these papers under a separate category - Student Papers. The decision
to publish will be purely that of the Journal.
The Journal gives a Best Student Paper Award each year from amongst the student papers
published by the journal during that year.

4.18. Automatic Termination of Student Membership


i) The membership of a student willl stand autoimatically terminated if the subscription
dues are not paid before the end of the financial year.

ii) A Student member is expected to complete Graduateship examination including


Project Work within a maximum period of “NINE” years. Student Membership shall
stand automatically terminated, if a Student Member has not passed the Preliminary
Examination within 3 years of his/ her enrolment. Section A Examination within 6
years of his / her enrollment; or within 4 years of his/her passing the Preliminary
Examination or the granting of Exemption to him/her there from whichever is earlier,
Section B Examination alongwith Project Work within 9 years of his/her enrollement
or within 4 years of his/her passing the Section A Examination whichever is earlier.

4.19 Re-enrolment of a Student Member whose Membership stands automatically


terminated :
A person who loses his/her membership under the above mentioned provisions may be
admitted as Student Member (re-enrolled) provided he/she has applied for re-enrollment
within one year of his/her losing the Student Membership and he/she satisfies the condi-
tions for Student Membership in force at the time of his/her application for re-enrollment.

A re-enrolled person shall not continue as Student Member beyond the period of 12 years
from the date of his/her admission for the original Student Membership. The membership of
a Student member (re-enrolled) shall stand automatically terminated if he/she does not
complete within two years of his admission as Student Member (Re-enrolled) that section
of the Examination for the non completion of which his/her original Student Membership
was terminated.

Subsequent to the timely completion of that Section of the Examination the provisions of
Section 3.6 A of the Rules of the Institution shall be applicable. A student member seeking
re-enrolliment has to pay Re-enrollment fee of Rs. 500/ and annual subscription at the rate
of Rs. 350/- No person shall be re-admitted as Student Member (Re-enrolled) for a second
time.

Journal”, the offical Journal of the institution, will be deemed as individual intimation to all
students and members concerned.

4.21 Institution’s Rights to make Changes in Requirements etc.


The institution reserves the right to make changes from time to time in requirments for
admission of Student Members, eligibility for admission to Examination, the provisions
relating to granting of Exemptions, the Scheme, the Syllabus and the standard of passing
of the Examination, the Examination fees and such other matters related to Examinations.

Reservation of Rights
The Board of Examinations reserves the right to amend the Regulations (Including
the Syllabus) as necessary.

All Communications published in ‘Industrial EngineeringJournal’ are deemed to


be individual Communications to the Student Members.

5.5 PROJECT WORK


Carrying out a project and submitting a Project Report is a requirement of the
Graduateship Examination.
A. Choosing the project :
The Project Proposal submitted by the student has to be approved by the Institution before
the student can start on his/her Project work.
The Project Work, should be carried out in an organization and under the guidance and
supervision of the Project Guide.
1. The Project Work should be carried out Individually and personally by the student.
2. The Project Work should demonstrate the ability of the student to apply the techniques
of Industrial Engineering to a specific situation or in any functional area.
3. The Project Work, through the Project Report, should demonstrate the ability of the
student for Data Collection, Analysis of Data, Formulation of Recommendations and for
suggesting a viable scheme for implementation of the recommendations.
4. The Data should be collected either by own observations and measurements or gathered
from generally accepted first sources like Balance Sheets, Control figures used by the
organization, Performance Reports from Departments etc. If general data on industrywise
or a national basis are used, the source shall be quoted and should be a generally
accepted source like Industry Publications, Government Statistical Data etc.
5. The areas Chosen may be one or more of the areas in which the compulsory papers are
prescribed for Section B Examination and or the areas from which the student has
chosen his Elective papers for section B Examination.
The student must have appeared for all these papers before submitting the Project
Proposal.
6. The student must make sure for self that the Project Work proposed to be under taken
can be conducted in the organization and the Project Report, fully meeting the
requirements of the Institution can be submitted to the Institution.

B. Preliminary requirement-approval of project work
1. The Student shuld submit the proposal of project work to the institution and obtain its
approval for the project work.
2. The student should select a Project Guide who will give his/her consent to guide the
student in his/her Project Work. The Guide should be a competent Industrial Engineer
or a senior officer with a Degree in Engineering, serving in the organization in which the
Project work will be carried out. (A corporate Member of the Institution can also be a
Guide).
A certificate from the Project Guide is required to be submitted along with the
Project Proposal as well as the final Project Report.
3. The guide should be made familiar with the requirements of the Project Work when
seeking his consent to act as Project Guide.
4. A write up on the Proposed Project should be prepared separately and enclosed alongwith

the application. The write up will be about six to eight pages in length. The salient
features to be included in this write up are:
a. Title
b. Preamble and salient features of the organization and precise definition of the
problem to be studied.
c. Salient points concerning data collection and analysis, the techniques to be used
and the methodology to be followed.
Key reference (from about 4-5 books and 5-7 key articles in Journals including
Industrial Engineering Journal) in these areas.
d. The nature of recommendations and the areas they will cover, an estimation of
benefits that may be expected and a review of the feasibility of
implementation.
e. The format prescribed for the final Project Report can be used as a guidance for the
format to be used.
5. The Application Form to be submitted is titled APPLICATION FOR APPROVAL OF
PROJECT PROPOSAL and can be downloaded from the web site. (and the same is
available at end of this document (4 pages)
6. The completed first two pages of the application form alongwith Letter of Consent from
the Project Guide and the write up of the Proposed Project should be sent to the
Institution for prior approval.
7. The application should be accompanied by a processing Fee of Rs. 75/- (Rupees
Seventy Five only) by a crossed Demand Draft drawn in favour of Indian Institution of
Industrial Engineering, payable at Mumbai.
8. The Institution may require clarifications or modifications for the approval of the project.
C. Submission of Project Report.
1. The Project Report cannot be submitted until the student has passed all the papers
(both Compulsory and Elective) of Section B.
2. The Project work should be done personally by the student under the approved project
guide and in conformity with the approved Project Proposal.
3. A certificate from the Guide should also be enclosed in the Project Report as provided
in the Format for Project Report. The Project Report should be ONLY in the Format
prescribed for Project Report (See next section)
4. The Collection of Data, Analysis of Data and application of techniques for the formulation
of recommendation should be clearly described in the Report.
All steps in the analysis of the relevant theory shall be presented in the Report. While
formulating the Recommendation, the expected costs and benefits, the advantages
and limitations of the recommendations should be clearly discussed.

The suggested scheme for implementation of the recommendations should be clear


and logically laid out with details of steps involved, time schedule of implementation,
monitoring, precautions to be observed.
5. A separate Synopsis of about six pages has also to be submitted alongwith the Project
Report.
6. The student should submit two hard bound copies of the Project Report (alongwith the
synopsis) None of the copies of the Project Report will be returned to the student.
7. The Project Report should be submitted to the Institution within a period of two years
from the date of completion of all papers in Section B.
8. All submission of Project Reports should be accompanied with an Examination Fee of
Rs. 1000/ (Ruppees Thousand only) in the form of crossed Demand Draft.
9. If the Report is not submitted within the period of two years, late fee will be charged.
Additional course of study may also be prescribed.

10. Publishing Rights.

a). The Project Report shall not be published before the decision of the Board of Examinations
of its acceptance or otherwise.
b). The Institution will have be right to use the Project Report in any manner that may be
deemed as expedient.
c). In case, the author wishes to publish the Report, due acknowledgement to the Institution
that it was a Project Report prepared for the Graduateship Examination of the Institution
has to be made by him/her.

D. Format of the Project report


1. PAPER
1.1 The Reort shall be typed on white paper, size 210 x 297 mm, 7 Kg, bond, for the
original typescript and the first copy. Other copies may be of any other bond paper.

2.1 The Project Report


A. The Project work should be done personally by the student under the guidance of an
approved project guide. A certificate from the Guide should also be submitted in the
form specified in the Format.

B. The project work is a test of the ability of the student for data Collection, Analysis of
Data, Formulation of Recommendation and for suggesting a viabie scheme for
implementation of his/her recommendation. The Project Report should demonstrate
these abilities.

C. A synopsis has also to be submitted along with the Project Report.

D. The Project Report should be submitted in the prescribed format which is given later.

3 Time Limit
A. The Project Report connot be submitted untill the student has passed all the apers
(both compulsory and elective) of section B

B. The Project Report should be submitted to the Institution within a period of two years
from the date of completing all the Section B papers.

C. If the report is not submitted within two years, late fee as applicable will be charged.

D. Students who completed Section B under old syllabus, should appear for two electives
under Section B of the current syllabus to become eligible for doing the project or
completing the Graduateship.

4. Examination Fee
The stipulated fees, (Rs. 1000) for Examination of the Project should be paid in the same
manner as for written papers along with the Project Report.

5. Examination of the Project Report


5.1 The Examiner may report the result as

a. Accepted
b. Revision, Additions, Modification necessary
or c. Rejected

5.2 When the Examiner requires revisions, additions, modifications, the same will be
conveyed to the student who will have to comply with the examination requirements.

5.3 If satisfactorily done the examiner may recommend acceptance or otherwise he


may recommend rejection.

5.4 In case of rejection the student may opt for reference to a Second Examiner with a
fresh payment of the Stipulated Examination Fee. If the Second Examiners also
agrees with the first examiner, the Report will be finally rejected. If the two examiners
differ, then the case will be refered to the Board of Examination whose decision will
be final

5.5 If the report is finally rejected, the student will have to undertake a fresh project and
follow the same procedure as for his/her first project, beginning with making a Proposal
for Project Work.

56. FORMAT FOR THE PROJECT REPORT AND SPECIFICATIONS

The format to be followed for submission of the Report is as follows:

1. Paper

1.1 The report shall be typed/word processed on white paper, (size 210 x 297mm) 7 kg.
bond, for the original typescript and the first carbon copy. (The two copies to be
submitted) other copies will be retained by the student.

2. Typing
2.1 The Typing or word processing shall be in standard letter size, double spaced on
one side of the paper only, using black ribbon and black carbons.

3. Margin
2.1 The typed sheet shall have the following margins :
Left 35mm, Top 35 mm, Right 20 mm, Bottom 20 mm.

4. Binding
4.1 The report shall be rexin bound in black.

5. Lettering
5.1 The lettering shall be inscribed on the bound back and the front cover.

5.2 The bound back shall contain the title and the name of the studet in 3 mm size
letters

6. Front cover

6.1 The front cover shall contain the following details :

10. Abstract

10.1 Every report shall have an abstract following the title sheet. The abstract shall lead
the reader by highlighting the important features of the material contained in the
individual chapters. The abstract shall not exceed 500 words.

11. Contents

11.1 The contents shall follow the abstract indicating the title of Chapters, Section and
Sub-Sections etc. using the decimal notation with corresponding page numbers
against them.

12. List of tables

12.1 The contents shall be followed by a ‘List of Tables’ indicating the Table number
Table title and the corresponding page number. The Table number shall be in decimal
notation indicating the Chapter number and the Table number in that Chapter.

12.2 Any rererence within the text shall be given by quoting the relevant number e. g.
‘Table 2.2’

e.g. 6.4 refers to Fig. 4 in Chapter 6.

13.2 Any reference within the text shall be given by quoting the refevant number, e.g.,
‘Fig. 6.4’.

14. Nomenclature.

14.1 The ‘Nomenclature’ follows the ‘List of Figures’ and contains the list of symbols
used. They shall be arranged alphabetically in order of Latin Letters, Greek letters,
superscripts and subscripts. As far as possible generally accepted symbols shall
be used

Symbols not available in typewriter shall be written in permanent black ink.

15. Page numbering

1 5.1 For items (8) to (14) the page number shall be in small Roman at 1 5mm from the
bottom of the page centrally located.

15.2. Page nimbers in Arabic numeral shall start with 2 on the second page of the
introduction chapter. There shall be no numbering of pages on which new chapters
begin. The number shall be at 15 mm from the top, centally located. All pages
including those containing Figures and Tables must have page numbers, serially
arranged.

16. Chapter numbering

16.1 The Chapter shall be numbered in Arabic numerals, Section and sub-section of any
chapter shall be in decimal notation. All chapters shall begin on a new page. The
titles for chapters, section, and sub-sections shall be in block capitals. The chapter
number and title shall be properly centered at the top of the page and should have
three spaces between them.

The chapter will be organized as follows.

17. Introduction to the project

17.1 The first chapter will be introductory Chapter. These chapters shall highlight the
importance of the investigation and also define the topic and scope of the work
envisaged. A typical format for the first three chapters are shown later in the Stan-
dard Format for Report Preparation.

18. Review of literature

18.1 This shall form Chapter 4. It shall present a critical appraisal of the previous work
done on the topic. The extent of and emphasis on this chapter shall depend on

nature of Investigation.

19. Work done

19.1 The work carried out by the student shall be presented in one or more chapters
depending on the nature of Investigation. A typical format will be a chapter each on
Data Collection analysis Data formation of Recommendations and typical format of
these chapters are shown later in the specimen format for Report Preparation

19.2 Each chapter may have several sections and sub-sections with suitable titles.

19.3 Important and short derivations, and representative data in tables and Figures, shall
be presented in these chapters. Information such as lengthy derivations, volumi-
nous tables and large number of figures shall be presented in the Appendix.

19.4 Figures and tables shall be on separate sheets and not inserted on the papers with
running text. Figures shall be in ammonia print. Depending on the size, figures and
tables shall be accommodated on sheets of size 210 x 297 mm or 197 x 450 or 297
x 625 mm. If there are longer tables that cannot be accommodated on these sheets,
there shall be a continuation table. Very large figures shall be placed in a pouch at
end of the report. All figures and tables included in the Appendices shall be accord-
ingly mentioned in the text, Lettering on figures shall be uniform either in engineer-
ing letters or typed. Each figure should be self-sufficient to provide all the informa-
tion. There must be a title for every figure and table.

19.5 Mathematical portions of the text shall preferably be typed. Where it is not pos-
sible, ample space shall be left, and equations and symbols shall be inserted
clearly in permanent black ink.

20. Concluding chapters

20.1 Discussion and conclusion

This chapter should include a thorough evaluation of the investigation carried out and shall
bring out the contribution, if any. The discussion shall logically lead to certain conclusions
and inferences. A suggested scheme of implementation should also be included.
Precantions necessary while implementation should also be given.

20.2 Concluding remarks

This may also include limitations of the present study and scope for further work.

21. Appendices

22. References

22 . 1 ‘Bibliography’ shall follow the last chapter. It shall give a list of works (papers,
books etc.) referred to in the body of the text and they shall be arranged in the order
they are first cited in the text. The numbering shall be in Arabic numerals indicated
as superscript along with the author’s name in the text. For any paper, the information
shall contain the names of the authors, the title of the journal, the volume number
underscored, the page number and the year of publication in parenthesis. In the
case of references from Journals and books in language other than English the
titles of the journals or books should be transliterated into latin script and not
translated. For any book the information shall contain the names of the authors,
the title of the book, the name of the publisher, the edition, and the year of publication
in the parenthesis. For papers and books with joint authorship, the name of all the
authors shall be reproduced in the same order. The author’s name shall begin with
the name followed by intials.

24. Synopsis (This should be separate from the Report)

24.1 Synopsis has to be typed in loose sheets, stapled and submitted along with the
project report. This should give information about the project in a nutshell and
should not exceed seven pages.

24.2 Four typed copies of the project report as well as of the synopsis are to be pre-
pared and two copies of each are to be submitted to the Institution. The student will
hand over one of each to the Guide and retain one copy of each for himself /
herself.

VI. ENROLMENT AS STUDENT MEMBER


6.1 Requirements
The Examinations are open only to the Student Members of the Instituton, whose membership
continue to remain valid.

The requirements for eligibility to student Membership of the Institution are


A person should not be less than 18 years of age and should possess one of the following qualifications

q (a) has passed the Higher Secondary (XII Standard) Examination under the 10 + 2+ 3 Shceme of
Education, of a Statutory Board of Higher Secondary Edcuation the Intermediate Examination,
recognised as equivalent thereto and has at least two years working experience in an
organisation.

q (b) has completed and passed first two years of a regular degree course in Engineering/ Technology.

q (c) is a Graduate in Arts, Science Commerce etc. and has at least one year working experience
in an organisation.

q (d) has a Diploma (3 yrs. Course) in Engineering / Technology and at least one year working
experience in an organisation. In case, a candidate has undergone 1 year sevice training as
a part of the course recognised by Bord of Apprenticeship Training, Govt. of India this will be
counted as working experience.

q (e) holds a Degree in Engineering / Technology of a University in India or has passed an Examination
recognised as equivalent thereto.

Note : A candidate should have experience in an organisation as mentioned under (a), (c) & (d) after
passing the qualifying examination. Working experience should be exclusive of the period, if any

spent in training as part of the qualifying educational programme.

The person should also abide by the Rules and Regulations laid down by the Institution for Student
Members and his/her membership should continue to remain valid by timely clearance of all his/her
dues.
A Person cannot continue as a student member beyond nine years. However Re-enrolment is
permissible (see clause 4.18)
6.2 The necessary application forms are given at the end as detachable sheets.
6.3 Enrolment :
Application for Student Membership has to be made in prescribed application form appended to this
Booklet. Photostat copy of the application form will not be accepted. All the three pages of the
Application Form and the Identity card must be filled completely and legibly
The application ahould be accompanied by the folowing.
(a) (i) A photostat or typed true copy of the Degree/Diploma Certificate and Marksheets of the
Highest Examination passed, duly attested by a Corporate Member of IIIE or a Government
Gazetted Officer or a Notary
(ii) Certificate/Letter from the employer in support of employment/service, (Engg. Graduate need
not submit experience certificate)
(iii) Photostat or a typed true copy of the Certificate in support of age duly attested as above and
(iv) 2 passport size photographs (affixed to the Application Form and to the Identity Card) duly
attested as above.
N. B. : 1 Every attested Certificate or Photograph must bear the name, desingation and full address
of the Gazetted Officer or the IIE Member, besides his signature and Official Stamp/Membership
Number. His name, designation and full address should also be given in the application for Student
Membership.
2. Attestations can also be obtained from a Notary
MARK LISTS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED IN PLACE OF DEGREE/ DIPLOMA CERTIFICATES.
6.4 Fees for enrolment
The following fees are payable at the time of enrollment as a Student Member by Demand Draft
(i) Admission fees Rs. 3,000.00
(ii) Subscription
a) if admitted in January
(1st April to 30 th September) Rs. 250.00
b) if admitted in july
(1 st October to 31 st March) Rs. 125.00
(iii) Identity Card Rs. 50.00

(iv) Exmption fees if claimed per paper Rs. 250.00 (See 6.6)

* The deposit will be adjusted towards Life Membership as Graduate Member when the student completes
the Graduateship Programme. In case the Student withdraws before the Completion of the Graduate
Programme the amount of Deposit (without interest) will be refunded

Upto 15 th March for July and upto 15th September for January admissions respectively.
With Late fee : upto 25th March for July and upto 25th September for January admission respectively

N.B.: Exemption fees at (v) is to be paid only by those who are eligible and who apply for exemption
from any paper (s).

6.5 Subscription (for subsequent years)


Subscription for a Student Member for subsequent years is Rs. 250/- per year. It will be due in the
month of April and should be paid latest by 30th June. If not received before 1 July, the member-
ship will stand suspended and no Journal (starting from July) of that year will be sent. If the
subscription remains unpaid till the end of the financial year, the membership will be terminated
and the student may have to pay additional readmission fees in addition to unpaid subscription for
the year.
No student will be allowed to appear for any examination unless all dues as on the date of the
examination have been paid.
Supply of Journal will be resumed only after the membership dues are paid but no back volumes
covering the delayed period will be sent.
