Technology Content Standard Addressed: Students will identify, apply concepts, and manage various tools and resources to evaluate their accuracy and appropriateness in solving problems and making decisions. Other Content Standard Addressed: Students analyze and interpret data. Objective: Students will be able to differentiate between latitude and longitude and apply it using a GPS Materials Needed: 3 Small objects Handheld GPS Paper and pencil Microsoft Powerpoint or drawing program Suggested Group Size: 2-3 students Procedures: 1. Groups begin on playground 2. Spread out and hide the 3 small objects in different places around the playground and field. 3. At each hiding spot, use the GPS to calculate the latitude and longitude coordinates. 4. Write the coordinates on a sheet of paper 5. After all the items are hidden and coordinates documented, trade coordinates with another group. 6. Use GPS to find their hidden objects. Assessment: Students will be required to create a map displaying a birds-eye view of the schoolyard. It must include the locations of the opposite groups hidden items and their latitude and longitudes. This will be done using drawing tools on Microsoft Powerpoint or other drawing program. The final map will assess their ability to use latitude and longitude to locate a specific destination.
