Assigment 2 (SMJC 2223)

1. A gas stream contains 18.0 mole% hexane and the remainder nitrogen. The stream flows to
a condenser, where its temperature is reduced and some of the hexane is liquefied. The
hexane mole fraction in the gas stream leaving the condenser is 0.05. Liquid hexane
condesate is recovered at a rate of 1.50 L/min.

(a) What is the flow rate of the gas stream leaving the condenser in mol/min?
(b) What percentage of the hexane entering the condenser is recovered as a liquid?

2. An experiment on the growth rate of organisms requires an environment of humid air

enriched in oxygen.
Three input streams are fed into an evaporation chamber:
(i) liquid water, fed at the volumetric flow rate of 20 cm3 /min
(ii) air (21.0 vol% O2 & 79 vol% N2)
(iii) pure O2, with the molar flow rate of one-fifth (1/5) of the stream of air to produce an
output stream with the desired composition.
The output gas is analysed and is found to contain 1.5 mol% of water. Calculate all unknowns
(Data: Density of water is 1.0 g/cm3 ; and MW of water = 18.02, of O 2 = 32.00, & of N2 =
28.02)

3. Strawberries contain about 15 wt% solids and 85wt% water. To make stawberry jam,
crushed stawberries and sugar are mixed in 45:55 mass ratio, and the mixture is heated to
evaporate water until the residue contains 1/3 water by mass.
(a) Draw and label a flowchart of this process.
(b) Calculate how many gram of strawberries are needed to make a gram of jam?

4. You are asked to make 1,000 kg of the mixed acid containing 60 wt% H 2SO4, 32 wt%
HNO3, and 8 wt% water, by mixing
i) mixed acid containing 11.3% HNO3, 44.4% H2SO4, and 44.3% water,
ii) 90% HNO3 aqueous solution, and
iii) 98% H2SO4 aqueous solution.
Calculate mass of Streams i, ii, and iii

5. Pure ethyl alcohol is to be produced by distillation of a 40% alcohol feed (by mass).
Benzene is added with the feed in order to form an azeotrope with water. it is estimated that
the distillate will contain 75% benzene, 24% water, with the remaining 1% being alcohol.
The bottoms will be the product and consists of pure alcohol. Calculate the feed rates of
benzene and alcohol solution and the fraction of alcohol lost in the distillate. The unit is to
produce 1000kg of product per hr.
