(C) SWBAT Describe specifically what the students did to maintain control of the ball
while staying afloat with a partner. (S2.H2.L2, Standard 1)
(A) SWBAT describe feelings and emotions about teamwork during water polo at the
end of class with a partner. (S5.H4.L2, Standard 3)
Check each objective is it specific? Is it achievable? Is it developmentally
appropriate?
Teacher Performance Objectives During the lesson the teacher will:
1. Explain safety and spacial awareness for all activities and check for understanding.
2. Give at least 2 pieces of positive specific, or corrective feedback to each student in
the pool.
3. Give clear and direct instructions throughout the lesson.

Special Considerations What are the safety concerns? What is unique about the
students in this class?
- Students will not jump on one another and will stay in their personal
space.
- Students need to know their personal ability in water so they know if they
can stay in the shallow end or the deep end.

Introduction:
Focus of the day: Learn basic skills of water
polo and what tools students need to play.
-Purpose: Water polo is an intense olympic
sport that has been around since the mid
1800s. It is a different kind of competitive
game that students will love.
- Start and stop signal: One long whistle to
stop and two short whistles to go.
- Safety: Students must tell the teacher if they
are not comfortable with swimming. Students
that are comfortable in the deep end may not
go under or mess around with other students
in the deep end. Students must not jump on
top of each other and cannot dunk each other
under water.
Swimming Skills:
Head up freestyle: Small controlled flutter
kicks while arms rotate like windmills, bent at
the elbow. Keep head up and out of the water
to focus on the ball.
Backstroke: Used while defending your
teams goal, Lay on your back while flutter

kicking. Arms rotate backwards like a

windmill, pushing water down towards your
feet. Head should be up out of the water so
you can look at who has the ball.
Skulling: This technique is used when waiting
for a pass or waiting for the next game to
start. Students will flutter kick vertically with
each arm out by the sides performing a figure
8 motion. To make this even easier, students
should hold a lot of air in their lungs and take
quick deep breaths to stay afloat.
Ball handling skills:
Dribbling: Performed with the ball, students
will use the head up freestyle stroke while
maintaining control of the volleyball in front of
the face. The ball should be touched with
each forearm as to keep it in front of you.
Passing/Shooting: Students will scoop the
ball up out of the water with one hand while
treading water to see where their target is.
Cock back the arm like you would a normal
throw and pass the ball.
Demonstration: Teacher will ask multiple
students to demonstrate each skill while the
class watches as he goes over the key points
for each skill.
Transition: The demonstration will take place
in the shallow end of the pool. Any student
that was not in the water will now get in to
start practicing the skills.
Activity 1: Becoming familiar with the skills.
Students will line up in the water in personal
space and wait for the teacher to call out
which skill they must perform. If the teacher
says Head up freestyle. Students will
perform the stroke while moving around in
general space, being aware of other students
and not bumping into anyone. The teacher
will then call out backstroke and all the
students will switch to backstroke while
moving around in general space, being aware
that they dont bump into anyone. The

teacher can also call out skull so that the

students skull in place. Finally the teacher
can tell students to rest so they can get some
energy back.
Demonstration: The teacher will have
students demonstrate the activity before they
start the activity while he explains the key
points for the students to hear and see.
CFU: What do you think the hardest part of
swimming freestyle is?
(Keeping your hips up with your head out of
the water.)
Teacher position: The teacher will have their
back to the wall and scanning the class.
Teacher must demonstrate extra awareness
because the students are in the water.

9:289:32

Extension up: Students can swim into the

deep end if they are comfortable enough
leaving shallow water for more space.
Extension Down: students can perform the
skills with a kickboard underneath them,
providing extra flotation and support.
Safety: Students must be aware of where
they are going so they do not hit anyone else.
transition: students will move to the shallow
end and get into 4 lines of 7.
Activity 2: Extreme sculling.
Students will now form 4 orderly lines of 6-7
students in each line. They will all be sculling
in place facing the teacher who will be on the
side of the pool. The teacher will call out
which direction he wants the students to spin,
kind of line simon says but without
punishment of not being able to participate if
you dont do whats said. Students should
have arms in front of them moving side to
side while kicking so they stay afloat.
Right spin: Students will barrel roll to the
right and then maintain sculling.

left spin: students will barrel roll to the left

and then maintain sculling.
frontflip: students will kick downwards with
both feet and up with their hands while curling
into a ball. Once upside down students can
use their hands to continue the rotation until
they are flat on their stomachs again.
backflip: students will arch their backs and
use their arms to rotate their legs over their
head until they are flat on their stomachs
again.
Teacher position: The teacher will have their
back to the wall and scanning the class.
Teacher must demonstrate extra awareness
because the students are in the water.
Demo: Teacher will ask four different
students to demonstrate the four different call
outs.
safety: students shouldnt go too deep in the
water to avoid hitting their head on the bottom
of the pool. If students get too tired while
performing this activity they can stand or hold
onto the wall to rest.
cfu: What do you do after performing a spin?
(Continue sculling)
transition: students will now stand and meet
over by the most shallow point of the pool
and wait for the next instruction.
Activity 3: Ball skills.
Teacher will break students into pairs and
give each pair a ball. Students will find an
open space in the pool and pass with their
partner while treading water. After receiving a
pass, the partner will dribble the ball to where
their partner just threw, the throwing partner
will in turn either swim head up freestyle or
head up backstroke to where their partner
just caught the ball. They will continue
switching places and passing the ball to each
other.
Safety: Students shouldnt throw the ball too
hard at each other to avoid injury and

9:3910:08

shouldnt jump onto other students when

getting into the pool.
Teacher position: The teacher will have their
back to the wall and scanning the class.
Teacher must demonstrate extra awareness
because the students are in the water.
Extension up: Students can pass the ball
back and forth several times before switching.
extension down: students can scull to the
other side if they get tired or stand once in
awhile to rest their legs.
transition: students will gather near the most
shallow point of the point of the pool and wait
for teacher instruction about the games about
to be played.
Activity 4: Students will now get to choose
whether they play in a competitive game with
score being kept or a non-competitive game
working on skills and shots. The competitive
game will be in the deep and the non
competitive game will be in the shallow end.
Rules and Regulations:
Students will have two teams
without a goalie.
Each team can score by
throwing the water polo ball and
knocking down the kickboards.
You can only have control of
the ball for 5 seconds before having to
pass.
After every goal, teams will
switch sides, and the ball will be rethrown into the middle.
Each game is going to be 10
minutes, 5 minutes halves.
Cannot shoot until past the
halfway point.
Ball goes to defending team if
a shot misses.
cfu: What is the best strategy during the
water polo game?
(Pass the ball to the open teammates until
you're close to the goal to score.)
safety: students are allowed to steal the ball

but cannot touch any opponents. Students

must knock the ball out of their opponents
hands, intercept a pass, wait for a 5 second
violation, or get the ball back after the enemy
team shoots on the goal and misses. These
are the only ways to get the ball back, NO
rough housing.
extension up: teams must make 4 complete
passes before shooting on the goal.
extension down: students only must make
one pass before shooting.
transition: students will bring the water polo
balls and goals back to their respective
places and gather near the shallow end of the
pool.
Closure: The teacher will review the
swimming skills and the ball handling skills
with the students and have them demonstrate S S
while he explains the key points.
S S
-What did you find most challenging during
todays lesson?
(sculling and shooting)
-What must your legs be doing at all times
while sculling and swimming?
(flutter kicking)
transition: students will leave the pool and
get changed.
