Philosophy of Assessment

I believe that if students learn, scores will come.

Therefore, nothing replaces good old effective instruction.
I believe it is the teachers job to motivate and teach intrinsic value to
student work.
Therefore, students will value what they have done beyond a
passing number.
I believe that goals cant be achieved without feedback.
Therefore, feedback is at the heart of assessment.
I believe a score is not a whole picture of who a student is or what a
student can be. Therefore, I will use and encourage the use of
both hard and soft data.
I believe everything works together.
Therefore, I will need to know the soft data to understand the
hard data.
I believe that assessment is a process, not a product.
Therefore, I will use and teach the correct process of formative
assessment.
I believe that behind every number is a story.
Therefore, I will analyze numbers looking for patterns, oddities,
etc.
I believe the role of assessment in learning is to measure what was
learned and to help determine how to learn more.
Therefore, I will use the data I collect.
I believe the most meaningful ways to provide feedback is through
formative assessment.
Therefore, I will provide guidance and in turn motivate the
student themselves to take ownership of their learning.
I believe the most powerful form of assessment is self-assessment.
