During my first semester in the BSW program I was faced with an assignment that was

based on evaluating a different culture other than my own. The main purpose of this assignment
was to discover why another culture behaves differently than my own. On my assignment I
researched on my boyfriends family who are of Albanian Culture. I discovered that this culture
has a very strong bond with their family ties. Also, I was able to discover that this culture is
dominated by the male sex. Knowing this information, I was able to understand why this culture
behaves the certain ways that they do with each other and other cultures. During the time I was
researching and gathering information about this culture, I was also learning how they view
certain aspects of life.
Overall, I was able to learn how this culture is the same as mine, but different at the same
time. Both of our families past generations came from Europe to America, to begin a new life
and find new opportunities. Each culture shares the same goal and that is to survive, but each
culture has different values on how one achieves this goal. This assignment help me understand
that as a Social Worker one needs to be able to meet someone from a different culture on the
same level, to understand their view points and where they are coming from. One important
concept of becoming a social worker is being able to understand that everyone comes from
different backgrounds, but we all are placed on this earth for a reason.
In conclusion, I was able to achieve in understanding this cultures learned behaviors and
their viewpoints on the knowledge they have developed. This assignment help open my eyes on
how all cultures have their secrets, but at the same time they should be treasured. Each culture on
this earth plays a role in making this world a melting pot one day. A type of melting pot where all
cultures are able to come together and become one! I know the knowledge I have learned from
this culture will help me achieve certain obstacles in my social work profession.
