During my first semester of my senior year in the BSW program I took the SW4710

class. In this class I worked on a paper that was based on ALEC (American Legislative Exchange
Council). The point of this assignment was to give my viewpoints on this group of people and
why their group is significant. This group of people wanted to give readers their knowledge on
how they viewed the laws in America.
During the process of this assignment I was able to obtain some knowledge that I can use
in my social work profession. I discovered that groups of people play a significant role in society.
Certain groups express their values in many different ways, which is something I always have to
remember when dealing with groups of people in the social work profession. In addition, I have
to remember that someones values may be different than my own and I have to keep that
separate in the professional world. As a social worker I have to be able to meet any individual on
the same level and understand all their viewpoints they have on life.
In conclusion, the information I have obtained from this assignment was based on
understanding groups and why they believe in doing the things they do. I believe that obtaining
this knowledge will help me in the future when I work with outside groups or companies. I look
at a group as a company, considering they share the same concepts, except one is widely known
compared to the other. It is important to understand that in the social work profession I am going
to be faced with groups of people who have different viewpoints than me and I need to be able to
understand from their view. Overall, I believe to become the social worker I wish to be, this
assignment was able to help me have a better understanding on why certain people form groups.
In the group, the individuals help each other give support they need in their own community who
share the same common interests.
