Supplies

herever your one-room Sunday school class

gathersin the back of the sanctuary, a
small room, the pastors office, the kitchen, or even
a hallwaythere are some basic supplies you will
need to have available almost every Sunday. The ideal
situation is to collect the basic supplies you think you
will need and keep them accessible every Sunday.

Store them in a cabinet or a closet if one is available;

if not, think about a box in the corner of a room or
under a pew in the sanctuary. Or assign a place to keep
some basic supplies in the trunk of your car. Choose
the activities you will use, and provide what will be
needed for just that unit. Or, if you need to, collect
supplies for one lesson at a time.

The Basics

scissors
markers
crayons, colored pencils
pencils and pens
markers
construction paper
drawing paper
tissue paper
glue and gluesticks

stapler and staples

yarn
rulers
paper punch
clear tape

index cards
scarves and streamers
paper cups and plates
plastic table covers
Bibles
simple Bible costumes
CD player

Beyond the Basics

Check each session for a list of the specific

supplies needed for each activity.
Make a wish list of the supplies you will need
for that unit. Members of your church will be happy
to know how they can support the children in the
church. Publish the list in the church newsletter or
bulletin.
If you have a place to store supplies, encourage
the congregation to bring supplies such as old
magazines, paper towel tubes, paper grocery bags,
yogurt cups, envelopes, or fabric scraps.
If you do not have a place to store things, make a
new list each week of the things you will need for the
next two or three weeks.

SESSION 1

Jesus Washes Feet

Bible Verse
Ive seen the Lord. (John 20:18)

Before You Begin

oot-washing in the ancient Mediterranean world had a function of personal hygiene

and hospitality. Since footwear consisted of sandals, a persons feet would become
dirty from walking outside. A host offered water so that the guests could wash their
feet when they came inside or have them washed by a servant. When Jesus washed
the disciples feet, he was combining the roles of servant and host. Through this act of
hospitality and service, Jesus expressed his love for the disciples and set an example of
acting in humility and service.
When Peter voiced his discomfort with Jesus actions, he was likely giving
voice to the surprise all of the disciples felt. It was not proper for ones teacher to
wash ones feet. By insisting that Peter must let him wash Peters feet, Jesus was
reminding Peter to accept the love and hospitality Jesus was extending to him.
Letting Jesus wash his feet was not simply about having clean feet but also about
Peters willingness to receive Jesus gesture of love and hospitality. This same love is
extended to each of us; and, like Peter, we must choose whether to accept it. When we
choose to follow Jesus, we agree to follow his example of serving others.
This week the children will begin a month-long project of creating a worship center
at home. Encourage parents to ask children about the items they have made and to
help children find a space at home to set up a worship center. Encourage
children and families to find ways to live out their faith throughout the
week, not just on Sunday mornings.

Jump In!
The following activities may be done in learning
centers as the children arrive or may be done with
the entire group.

Ass e mbl e t h e Cr ew
Supplies: Resource Pakp. 2, DVD and player, offering
basket, marker

Greet each parent and child as they arrive.

Display the Attendance Chart (Resource Pakp. 2), and mark it as the children
arrive. Show the children where to place their offerings on the worship table.
Play Lets Go Deep Blue on the DVD.

Photocopy Take Care of Your Feet (Activity 1a) for each child to take home.

ASK: When was the last time you thought about your feet? What are some of the
things you use your feet for?
SAY: Your feet are important, and they work hard. Today were going to give our feet
some extra attention.

Have the children remove their shoes and socks.

Give each child a copy of Take Care of Your Feet. Read the Foot Facts aloud, then
lead the children in doing the exercises described on Take Care of Your Feet.
Now give each child a small amount of lotion, and invite him or her to massage the
lotion into his or her feet.
Have the children put their socks and shoes back on.

Not m y favor it e t hing to do

Supplies: paper, crayons, colored pencils

Give each child a piece of paper, and encourage each child to draw a picture of a
task or chore that he or she does not like to do.
When everyone has finished, have the children guess what each person has drawn.

ASK: What is it that you dont like about this chore? Why is this chore necessary?
ASK: Would you ever willingly volunteer to do your least favorite task for someone
else so that he or she didnt have to do it? What would you think if someone
volunteered to do an unpleasant chore for you?

SAY: As I read the Bible story today, listen for the word feet. Each time you hear me
say, feet, stand up or sit down. If you are sitting down, stand up; if you are standing
up, sit down. Listen carefully.
Read the Bible story from Jesus Washes Feet, encouraging the children to stand up
and sit down as directed.

SAY: At the time Jesus lived, if people wore any shoes at all, they wore sandals. They
did a lot of walking outside where it was very dusty.
ASK: What do you think their feet looked like? (dusty, dirty)
SAY: Because their feet got so dirty, when they went inside to eat, someone would
wash their feet.
ASK: Do you think washing peoples dirty feet was a fun job?
SAY: It was usually the servants who got the job of foot washing. So when Jesus
washed the disciples feet, he probably surprised them all, not only Peter. Jesus did
this to teach the disciples the importance of serving one another.
SAY: Earlier we talked about some of your least favorite chores. Imagine that Jesus
offered to take out the garbage for you, or change a babys dirty diaper, or do some
of the other tasks we talked about.
ASK: How do you think you would feel, sitting and watching Jesus do those things?

Give each child a white handkerchief, a plastic cup, and a rubber band.
Have each child stretch the handkerchief over the opening of the plastic cup, securing
it with a rubber band. Then encourage each child to use permanent markers to draw a
design in the center of the fabric stretched over the cup.
Show each child how to use a spoon to scoop up a small amount of isopropyl alcohol
and slowly drip it onto the center of the design he or she has drawn. The marker color
will begin to spread. Continue to drop the alcohol on the design until the design is

Before You Begin

any of the stories we know about Jesus ministry involve a meal. The act of eating
together fostered fellowship among Jesus and his disciples, the crowds, and the
outcasts. Perhaps the most well-known meal Jesus and his disciples shared is the one
we refer to as the Last Supper or the Lords Supper.
We usually think of the Last Supper as a meal that occurred when Jesus was
celebrating Passover with his disciples. We remember the Last Supper each time we
celebrate the sacrament of Communion.
Jesus sent Peter and John into Jerusalem to make preparations for the celebration
of the Passover meal. As it was traditional for Jews to travel to Jerusalem for the
celebration of the Passover, guestrooms were not uncommon and were rented out to
visitors.

Supplies: Activity 2a, whole-wheat flour, sugar, salt, olive oil, water, cooking spray,
measuring cups and spoons, mixing bowls, spoons, forks, baking sheets, oven, cleaning
supplies

Make copies of Unleavened Bread Recipe (Activity 2a).

Have the children wash their hands. Also, wash and dry the work area.

SAY: Today were going to make unleavened bread.

ASK: Does anyone know what a leavening agent such as yeast does when you use it
to make bread? (It makes the bread rise.)
SAY: Since this bread will not have leavening in it, it will be flat.
Using the Unleavened Bread Recipe, have the children measure the ingredients
needed into a mixing bowl and mix well.
Dust the work area with extra whole-wheat flour, and spray a baking sheet with
cooking spray.

TIP
This recipe makes six
pieces of unleavened
bread. Make multiple
recipes if you need to
so that each child
will have a piece of
unleavened bread during
worship.
Check with parents to
see whether any child
has a food allergy before
doing this activity.

Have the children dump the contents of their bowl onto the floured work area.
Show the children how to knead the dough by repeatedly folding it over and pushing
it down; then encourage the children to knead the dough for several minutes.
Divide the dough, and give each child a piece. Have each child flatten his or her
dough and place it on the prepared baking sheet. Then have each child use a fork to
poke holes all over the surface of her or his bread piece.
Bake the bread at 400 degrees for ten minutes.
Have the children wash their hands.

Jesus Enters Jerusalem

March 20

Bible Verse

Luke 19:28-40

Ive seen the Lord. (John 20:18)

Before You Begin

odays Bible story is a familiar one. Each year on Palm Sunday, we celebrate the
story of Jesus triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Many of us celebrate the Sunday
before Easter by waving palm branches and shouting, Hosanna! Lukes account of
Jesus entry into Jerusalem is the only one of the four Gospels not to mention either
palm branches or Hosannas! Instead, Luke describes the crowd laying their cloaks on
the road before Jesus and saying, Blessings on the king who comes in the name of the
Lord (Luke 19:38).
Whether palm branches were waved, cloaks were laid down, and shouts of
Hosanna! were involved, Jesus entry into Jerusalem was clearly a time of
celebration. The people were in need of a new leader, and they looked to Jesus to fill
that role.
Jesus sent two of his disciples into a town to borrow a colt for him to ride on as
he entered Jerusalem. This instruction seems strange to our modern sensibilities.
However, at the time of Roman rule, it was not uncommon for Roman soldiers to
requisition animal and human labor. Roman soldiers were more likely to requisition a
powerful horse rather than a colt that had never been ridden. Even in the borrowing
of the donkey, Jesus set himself up as a different kind of leader. Jesus
came as a peaceful leader to teach people to love and serve one
another. Jesus entered Jerusalem riding humbly on a donkey rather than
pompously on a war horse.

people thought he was the leader they were looking for. This is why they were
celebrating.
ASK: How is Jesus a leader? (He teaches us how we should live. He shows us by

different stories about Jesus to tell. A few stories are found in all four Gospels. The
story of Jesus riding into Jerusalem is one of those stories.
Have children look up and take turns reading aloud the following Scriptures:
Matthew 21:1-11; Mark 11:1-11; Luke 19:29-40; and John 12:12-19.

triumphant ride into Jerusalem and Jesus resurrection, some sad and frightening
things happened. The week between Palm Sunday and Easter is called Holy Week.
During Holy Week we remember the events that led up to the discovery of the empty

Jesus is alive!

Before You Begin

My Plan

Although their accounts differ in details, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John all
give an account of the empty tomb. None of the Gospels, however, describe the
Resurrection itself. Jesus resurrection remains part of the mystery of our faith. Ours
is a Resurrection faith, one that does not rely on evidence of how the Resurrection
occurred. We know that Jesus is alive because of the witness of those who
experienced the presence of the risen Jesus and by our own experiences of Jesus
presence with us.

q Lent-and-Easter
Symbols Game

he Christian church has chosen to gather on Sunday mornings to remember the

early Sunday morning many years ago when the tomb was discovered empty. Every
Sunday morning is a little Easter celebration.

In Johns account, it was Mary Magdalene who discovered that the stone in front
of the tomb had been rolled away. She ran to tell Peter and the other disciple that
the tomb was empty. The second disciple is never named but referred to only as
the other disciple or the one whom Jesus loved. Some scholars believe these
references are deliberately vague to be inclusive and represent all of the other
disciples. It has also been suggested that these references are to the writer of the
Gospel himself. When the two disciples reached the tomb, they verified
Marys account.
The story then returns to Mary Magdalene, who encountered Jesus but
mistook him for the gardener. Only when Jesus spoke Marys name did she
recognize him.
Enjoy celebrating Easter with your children. Easter is a time to
celebrate Gods great, never-ending love. Jesus is alive!

The Road to Emmaus

April 3
Bible Story
Luke 24:13-35

Bible Verse
Happy are those who dont see and yet believe. (John 20:29)

Before You Begin

he Gospels contain multiple stories of Jesus post-resurrection appearances. Of

these, the appearance on the road to Emmaus is one of the most detailed. Two of
Jesus disciples were walking to Emmaus. These two men, one of whom was named
Cleopas, were among the extended group of Jesus followers but not of the twelve of
Jesus closest disciples. The location of Emmaus is unknown. Scholars have proposed
four possible locations within three to twenty miles of Jerusalem.
It was the first day of the week, the day of Jesus resurrection; and as the disciples
walked along, they were discussing everything that had happened. Then Jesus joined
them, but the men did not recognize him.
When the trio reached Emmaus, Jesus acted as if he were going on. Jesus was
following hospitality etiquette of the time. In Near Eastern cultures, a guest was
obligated to turn down an invitation of hospitality until it was vigorously repeated.
The disciples insisted, and Jesus accepted their offer of hospitality. As they were
sharing a meal, Jesus took the bread, blessed it, broke it, and gave it to them. These
actions were Jesus signature; these same verbs are used in the telling of the feeding
of the five thousand and in the sharing of the Lords Supper. It was through Jesus
actions rather than his words that the disciples finally recognized him.
This month you will collect offerings for Heifer International.
Donating to this organization is one way to act out our faith and share
Jesus love with others.

SESSION 6

Thomas Believes

April 10

Bible Verse

John 20:24-31

Bible Story

Happy are those who dont see and yet believe. (John 20:29)

Anchor Point
I believe in Jesus.

Before You Begin

n Johns Gospel account, Mary Magdalene was the first person to see Jesus after his
resurrection. Jesus then appeared to the disciples in a locked room. Although that
account does not mention that Thomas was not present with the other disciples, his
absence becomes apparent in the retelling of Jesus next appearance. Since Thomas
had not yet seen the risen Lord, the other disciples were telling him about their
experience. Thomas, who had witnessed Jesus arrest and death on the cross, was not
sure that he could believe what the other disciples were saying. Thomas wanted to see
Jesus for himself.

My Plan

Because of his desire to see the nail marks in Jesus hands before he believed that
Jesus was alive, Thomas has earned the nickname Doubting Thomas. That nickname
does a disservice to Thomas, because it implies that Thomas faith was not as strong
as it should have been or as strong as the faith of the other disciples. How quickly
its forgotten that the other disciples werent willing to take Mary Magdalenes word
as proof that Jesus was alive. In wanting to see Jesus for himself, Thomas was no
different from the other disciples.

qB
 ible Verse Balloons

When Jesus did appear to Thomas, he offered to let Thomas touch his wounds and
told Thomas to believe. Jesus was giving Thomas what he needed to be able
to have faith. Thomas immediately recognized Jesus without needing to
touch him and proclaimed that Jesus was Lord. Thomas shows us that its
OK to have a questioning faith.
When Jesus said, Happy are those who dont see me and yet believe,
he wasnt admonishing Thomas for wanting to see him. Rather, Jesus
was assuring those of us who were not there to witness his postResurrection appearances that seeing isnt a prerequisite for belief.

the air inside the balloon? (no) How do you know that the balloon is filled with air?
(because it is larger than it was)
Let go of the balloon.

SAY: We couldnt see the air, but we saw the balloon get bigger. And when I let go,
we saw the escaping air propel the balloon around the room. Some of you may have
felt the air as it escaped, too.
Blow up the same or another balloon, and tie it closed.

ASK: Now that Ive tied the balloon so that the air wont escape, what will happen to
this balloon if I let go of it? (It will fall to the ground.)
Let go of the balloon.

ASK: Why did the balloon fall to the ground? (the effect of gravity) Can you see
gravity?
SAY: We cant see air or gravity, but we can see their effects. Gods love is like that.
ASK: Can we see Gods love? How do you know God loves you?
SAY: When we believe that God loves us and is with us even though we cant see God,
we call that faith. Our Bible story today is about one of the disciples who wanted to
see Jesus before he would believe Jesus was alive.

The Great Commission

April 17

Bible Verse

Matthew 28:16-20

Happy are those who dont see and yet believe. (John 20:29)

Before You Begin

Bible Story
Anchor Point
I believe in Jesus.

odays Bible story is found in the Gospel of Matthew. It is the only post-Resurrection
appearance of Jesus that Matthew includes and is the last four verses of the Book.
In Matthews story, Jesus appearance to the disciples was not to prove to them that
Jesus had risen. Matthew assumes that the disciples had already accepted that the
Resurrection had occurred. Matthew has Jesus giving his disciples the authority to
baptize, teach, and make disciples.

My Plan

This story is commonly referred to as the Great Commission. A commission can

be a command to act in a certain way or the authority to act on behalf of another
person. Here both of these meanings are appropriate. Jesus knew that he would no
longer be with the disciples on earth as he had been, so he granted them the authority
to continue his work. This task was not a Well, if you want to, go ahead and do this
situation, however. Jesus was commanding the disciples. Their job was to go and
make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19). Although Jesus ministry had been
localized in a relatively small geographic area, his commission to the disciples was to
spread the Word.

qD
 eep Blue Bible
Adventure

Since we are followers of Jesus, the Great Commission is for us too. Like the
disciples, we are charged with spreading the Word. We are to tell people
about Jesus love.
Jesus did not issue the Great Commission to the disciples and to
us and then leave us on our own. Jesus left the disciples with a promise
that extends to all of his followers: I myself will be with you every day
(Matthew 28:20). When we are not sure whether we can continue to do
Gods work, Jesus is with us, helping us and showing us the way.

Believers Share

April 24

Bible Verse

Acts 4:32-37

Bible Story

Happy are those who dont see and yet believe. (John 20:29)

Anchor Point
I believe in Jesus.

Before You Begin

odays Bible story is from the Book of Acts, also known as The Acts of the Apostles.
In addition to detailing the early believers actions that led to the spread of the
gospel, the Book of Acts offers several glimpses into the shared life of the first
community of believers. Luke, the author of Acts, tells us, the community of believers
was one in heart and mind and they shared all their possessions (Acts 4:32). This
concept may be difficult for us to imagine. Think about all the Christians in the world
today living together and sharing everything. Or even just the people in your church. Its
difficult to understand how that would possibly work.

My Plan

We know that the early church had its problems. We hear about those later in Acts
and the rest of the New Testament. But in the beginning, the believers came together
as a community to support one another. The emphasis was on teaching, fellowship,
sharing goods, and prayer. The result was that no one was in need and the church
gained followers.

qB
 elievers Share

The primary purpose of the new believers common life together was to nurture
Christian community. They devoted themselves to the apostles teaching as the
apostles continued to bear witness to Jesus life, teachings, and resurrection.

q What Can We Share?

Christians today, like our brothers and sisters of long ago, are called to
share what we have with those in need. This month your class has had the
opportunity to share in a mission project to support Heifer International.
By participating in this project, your class is a part of the global
community of Christians. Your offerings will allow Heifer International to
meet the needs of people all over the world.

others. Working together often means using our hands to do Gods work.
ASK: What are some ways we use our hands to do Gods work together?

Choosing the Seven

May 1
Bible Story
Acts 6:1-7

Bible Verse
They praised God and demonstrated Gods goodness to everyone. (Acts 2:47)

Before You Begin

n the sixth chapter of Acts, we read the story of the early church choosing seven men
to oversee the daily distribution of food to the poor. The story is a short one, and the
premise seems simple and straightforward. However, there is much to be learned from
these seven verses.
The story begins by describing a conflict between the two groups in the early
church. How the particular conflict developed is unstated, but we are told that the
issue involves the case of some widows not receiving enough food during the daily
distribution of food. Right from the start, the story contains interesting information
about the early church.

Secondly, there was a system in the early church that provided for food
distribution so that everyone had enough to eat and no one went hungry. Helping and
serving others have always been important aspects of life as a Christian.

q Helping Others

The early church leaders came up with a solution to the conflict. They decided
to choose certain members to oversee the food distribution. Here is
recognition that while were all called to do Gods work, none of us can
do everything. There are plenty of ministry opportunities to go around.
This short Bible story ends with the Word of God continuing to spread
and the church continuing to grow. When we work together to do Gods
work, good things happen!

Philip and the Ethiopian

Bible Verse

May 8
Bible Story
Acts 8:26-40

They praised God and demonstrated Gods goodness to everyone. (Acts 2:47)

Anchor Point
I can help spread the
good news.

Before You Begin

odays Bible story is about the Holy Spirit at work in the life of Philip. The
interaction between Philip and the Ethiopian is an example of the amazing things
that happen when followers of Jesus allow the Spirit to guide their actions and words.
The Ethiopian in the story was an important official who was responsible for the
treasury of the Ethiopian queen. In spite of his status, Jews at that time would have
considered him an outsider: He was from Ethiopia, and he was a eunuch. In spite of
this, the Ethiopian man was seeking God. He had been to Jerusalem to worship and
was on his way home when the Spirit sent Philip his way.
Philip, one of Jesus disciples, had been preaching in Samaria when the Spirit,
in the form of an angel, told him to take the road leading from Jerusalem to Gaza.
On that road Philip encountered the chariot carrying the Ethiopian man. The Spirit
guided Philip to keep up with the chariot. As Philip ran by the chariot, he heard the
Ethiopian reading aloud as was customary at the time. Philip recognized that the man
was reading from the scroll of Isaiah. Philip asked the man if he understood what he
was reading, and the man invited him to explain it. At this invitation, Philip told the
Ethiopian the good news about Jesus. To one who was considered an outcast, hearing
about Jesus, who welcomed societys outcasts, must have been amazing.
The Ethiopian man ended up asking Philip to baptize him.
Philip was willing to follow the Spirit, and as a result he had an
opportunity to proclaim the gospel and spread the good news. Be open to
the Spirit at work in your own life. When opportunities to share the good
news present themselves, be ready.

Pentecost
Bible Verse

May 15
Bible Story
Acts 2:1-41

They praised God and demonstrated Gods goodness to everyone. (Acts 2:47)

Before You Begin

s Christians, we celebrate Pentecost as the birthday of the church and as the day
God sent the Spirit to the followers of Jesus. But Pentecost is not a holiday that
originated with Christianity. Pentecost was a Jewish festival more commonly known as
the Feast of Weeks.
While the disciples were celebrating Pentecost, the Spirit arrived. The arrival
was not a calm, quiet event; rather, the Spirit came sounding like a violent wind and
appearing like tongues of fire. The Spirits arrival in Jerusalem on Pentecost Day was
a fulfillment of prophecy and an answer to the communitys expectant prayers. Jesus
had promised to send the disciples a helper, and now it had arrived.
The excitement surrounding the arrival of the Holy Spirit attracted a crowd. Not
everyone in the crowd was convinced of the Spirits presence. Some joked that they
were witnessing the effects of strong wine. The Spirit-filled Peter responded to this
accusation and began to preach. It must have been an exceptional sermon, because
we are told that about three thousand believers were baptized that day!
The Spirit did not come just to the disciples but also to each person gathered
there. It is this Spirit that empowered Gods people to continue to spread the good
news of Jesus. The Spirit is still active and at work in the world. We may
not hear rushing wind or see tongues of fire descending on one another,
but Gods Spirit continues to empower us to do Gods work.
The concept of the Holy Spirit is sometimes a difficult one for children
and adults to understand. It is OK to admit to your children that you dont
have all the answers. Mystery is a part of faith.

Before You Begin

ollowing the arrival of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, the apostles continued to
witness about Jesus life and teachings and the followers of Jesus grew in number.
The rapid growth of the community of believers made some religious and political
leaders in Jerusalem nervous. Followers of Jesus were persecuted. Some of them were

After the stoning of Stephen, many of the believers left Jerusalem. The unexpected

Back in Jerusalem, the followers of Jesus were in hiding. They were in danger of

We Are One Body

Bible Verse

May 29
Bible Story
1 Corinthians 12:12-31

They praised God and demonstrated Gods goodness to everyone. (Acts 2:47)

Before You Begin

odays Bible story is from the letters Paul wrote to the church at Corinth. During
his missionary travels, Paul helped establish that church and became friends with
the followers there. As Paul was continuing on his missionary journey, he heard that the
Christians in Corinth were struggling and arguing among themselves. Specifically, they
were quarreling over who was most important. Paul wrote to his friends at Corinth to
remind them that each person is important in his or her own way.
To make his point, Paul used the one-body-many-parts metaphor, which was
common in the Greco-Roman world and would have been familiar to Pauls readers. In
Chapter 12 of 1 Corinthians, Paul used the metaphor in two ways. First, Paul addressed
those members of the Corinthian church who had low self-esteem and wished they
were something other than what they were. Verses 15 and 16 mentions the foot
wishing it were a hand and the ear wishing it were an eye. Secondly, Paul addressed
those who were suffering from an inflated sense of importance and looked down
on others. Verse 21 says that the eye cannot say to the hand, I dont need you and
neither can the head say to the feet, I dont need you.
The ways Paul addressed those suffering from low self-esteem and those with
an inflated sense of importance have a common message: Just as every
part of the body is important and has its own purpose, every person
is important and has a job to do. If one part of the body were missing,
the body would not be the same. If even one person is missing from the
church, the church is not the same.

Ministry With
Special-Needs Children
by Brittany Sky Stanley
According to the National
Organization on Disability, there are
fifty-six million people in the United
States with disabilities. That means
approximately eighteen percent
Americans have a disability of some
sort. With this kind of number of
children being diagnosed with some
kind of learning disability or special
need, we as a church must accept that
the children in our classrooms will be
part of that sociological makeup. We
are called to allow the children to
come (Matthew 19:14). All children are
included in this invitation. We must
learn how to meet the needs of these
children and their families. One of the
easiest and most effective things you
can do as a teacher is to adjust the
way you manage your classroom. Here
are some classroom management tips
that will help all of the students in your
room:
1. Be in contact with the guardians
of the children in your classroom.
They will know their child better than
anyone else. They will be able to tell you
what works best for their child at home,
at school, and in social activities. They
can give you suggestions on how to
work with their child.

2. Post the rules and expectations

where the class can see them. Make
sure that the rules are written in We
will statements and not We will not
statements. If you provide only what
your class will not do, the children will
not know what the class will do. With
each written rule, provide a picture of
what that behavior or action looks like.
3. Provide a visual schedule of the
class session. What will your class be
doing that day? Giving this information
to your children will help them stay
focused and attentive.
4. Have a box of fidget toys
available for your class. It can help
your children to have something to
touch and manipulate while they listen.
Such fidget toys include play dough,
chenille stems, Slinkys, stress balls,
Klixx, or Magic Loops.

6. Provide a small tent or a quiet

space in the classroom. This will
provide the children with a space to
go to if they feel overloaded and are in
need of some quiet time. Place books,
crayons and paper, and prayer stones in
this space.
7. If you know that you have a child
who has a hard time focusing, invite
that child to sit in a place where he or
she will be sure to see you. This will
help the child maintain focus and feel
more included.
8. Provide movement breaks
during class. You could turn on the
music CD-ROM and dance out the
wiggles, stretch, or go for a quick walk
around your classroom.

5. Use a timer in your classroom

with each activity. The timer will help
the children in the room stay focused
because they have to focus only for the
amount of time you give them.
