Accommodations

create a protective surrounding for an egg

dropped 3 ft from the ground.

1.

For a child with ADHD, we will monitor their group to ensure they
are on task and engaged.

2. For an ELL student, we will speak using learning strategies such as

requesting assistance, employing non-verbal cues, and using
synonyms and circumlocution (conveying ideas by defining or
describing when exact English words are not known)

Objectives:

TSW create an egg drop protection surrounding (from the materials given) to demonstrate
force.
TSW manage a budget by using money and the budget tracker
TSW record the experiment using an Ipad
TSW use synonyms when speaking about curriculum based vocabulary

Lesson Plan:

Elicit prior understanding:

Say: We have been studying force for the past few days. What is force? How do we measure it?
What is gravity?

Engage:
Drop an egg. Ask students: Why did my egg break? Discuss. Get very close to the ground and drop
another egg. Say: Why didnt my egg break this time? Discuss. Show video from prezi and present
to the students the challenge. In the prezi, the students will see the different jobs and receive
more information of the budget. Each group will be allowed a $15 budget. The students will use the
budget tracking sheet to record their spendings.

Explore:
Students will explore their materials and be allowed to manipulate the materials. For example, they
are allowed to drop materials to better understand how it would hold up with an egg. Students will
be allowed to use their technology to explore ideas and watch videos on egg drop projects from
other people however, they cannot steal an idea. They can use an idea, but must make provisions.

Explain:
Students will come up with a plan or a model on paper. This gives direction to the actual model.
The teacher will come around and guide their explanations with questions like: Why did your group
choose to make your model like this? How will ________ (insert piece of material) help protect the
egg? How will your model protect the egg if it is dropped from 10 ft?

Elaborate:
.

Once the students come up with a plan, they will begin creating their egg drop project. The
photojournalist will record these actions while the note-taker records what is working and what
isnt working. Once completed, class will come together and test out each model. After testing, the
students go back with their groups and discuss what they would change if they did this again.

Evaluate/ Assessment:

We will look at the budget sheets to see if the students successfully used a budget. We will look to see if they stayed within
the given budget and how they used the money. We will use a rubric to test the overall collaboration of the group. We will
know that the students understand force by the discussion at the beginning of the lesson and by discussion after the models
are tested. We will know the students can create products using technological mediums by the outcomes on the Ipads. We
will know our ELLs understand the vocabulary through personal discussion.

Extend/ Enrichment:
Allow students to play with the force simulation at:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/scienceclips/ages/10_11/forces_action.shtml

Closure / Culminating Activity: (Explain how you will accomplish this short portion of the lesson))

Reteach

(This may not be necessary, but state HOW you will reteach. BE SPECIFIC)

First, we would reteach force by using this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?

v=LEs9J2IQIZY. We would ask the student to summarize what force means to them.
Next, we would model force by pushing on the wall or pushing/pulling on a table (we
would ask for the students help).

Self-Assessment : We would ask ourselves: Did the students understand the concepts? If not, how could I make it

better for next time? Was I clear and concise? Did the students successfully create a protective surrounding for the egg?
Did the students understand their budget and how to use it? Did I give them all the tools that I had? What can I change to
make it better for next time?
