American Club receives

2016 spring primary The
AAAs Five Diamond rating
election sees 19%
turnout in Kohler
Only 291 of the Villages 1,517
registered voters turned out for
the February 16 spring primary
election, where three candidates
squared off for the Wisconsin Supreme Court. Rebecca Bradley
received the most Kohler votes
at 186. JoAnne Kloppenburg received 88 votes, and Joe Donald
received 17.
Justice Bradley, who was appointed by Governor Scott Walker
received 45% of the votes statewide, and Kloppenburg, an appeals Judge, received 43% with
Donald receiving 12%. Donald
has since endorsed Kloppenburg.
The next election will be the
Spring Election and Presidential
Preference Primary on Tuesday,
April 5. The Presidential Preference Primary is for the Republican and Democrat parties to determine which candidate should be
nominated at the parties national
conventions to be their presidential candidate in the general election in November.
Kohler voters will also elect
school board and Village board
candidates at the spring election.
For school board, the seats of Pete
Schueller and Marlene Yang will
be up for grabs. The term of office
for school board members is three

years beginning on Monday, April

25, 2016.
For Village Board, the seats of
Susan Jaberg and John Winter will
be up for re-election. John Pethan
has decided not run for re-election. All terms begin on Tuesday,
April 19, 2016, and are for two
years.
Polls at the Kirkpatrick Center
at the Kohler Village Hall, 319
Highland Drive, and will be open
from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Voters
will again be required to show a
photo ID to vote, and must have

lived in the Village of Kohler for

28 days to vote in the Village of
Kohler.

Need an absentee ballot?

The deadline for requesting
an absentee ballot is Thursday,
March 31. The ballot will be sent
by mail, and absentee voting in
the Clerk/Treasurers Office will
be available from Monday, March
21-Thursday, March 31, 8:00 a.m.
to 4:00 p.m. and Friday, April 1,
8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Absentee
voters are also required to show a
photo ID to vote.

Village loses appeal in tax dispute with Kohler Co.

The Village of Kohler has lost
an appeal in its tax dispute with
Kohler Co. after three appellate
judges ruled unanimously in favor of Kohler Co. in its lawsuit
against the Village.
The companys lawsuit claimed
it overpaid more than $600,000
in 2012 property taxes due to the
over-assessed value of its resort
properties. The Village appealed

after Sheboygan County Circuit

Court Judge Timothy Van Akkeren ruled in favor of the company in February, 2015.
At issue was the method used
by the Villages assessor to include more than just the value
of the land and facilities when
determining assessed value. The
assessor also factored in the value of the companys business op-

erations for The American Club,

Inn on Woodlake, Riverbend, and
Blackwolf Run.
Similar court cases have ruled
that business value may be included in a property assessment if its
determined that the propertys inherent income producing capacity would survive the sale of the

female youth basketball players,
who ranged in age from 7 to 14
years. The annual recognition salute took place at half-time of the

included teams from 1st grade
through 8th grade, were an-

nounced and had the opportunity

to cheer on their fellow players
during the salute.
This annual recognition event
is an important component of
the Kohler girls basketball feed-

er program in not only spreading

awareness of girls basketball but
also increasing support of the
work by school administration,
coaches and parents to ensure all
girls have the chance to play bas-

ketball beginning in elementary

school and continuing through
high school.

Court agreed and Kohler Co. will

reportedly get a property tax refund of $605,908.51 plus interest.

Other court cases are pending for
taxes paid by Kohler Co. in 2011,
2013 and 2014. In 2011, Sheboygan County Circuit Judge Terence

Bourke ordered the Village to reassess the properties. The company is still contesting some of those
reassessments.

Mary Lou Barrock

On February 13, Mary Lou

(Rafool) Barrock was born to
eternal life with family by her
side at Holy Family Memorial
Hospital in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. She died of natural causes.
The daughter of Thomas and
Mary Rafool, Mary Lou was born
and raised in Peoria, IL and was
the baby of six. She met the love
of her life, Robert G. Barrock, at a
Lebanese convention in St. Louis,
MO, and made an art out of her
role as Homemaker.

Mary Lou built and nurtured

lasting friendships in Manitowoc
for 54 years. Her kindness, generosity, beauty and hospitality will
be missed by all her dear friends
and loving family who she leaves
behind.
Mary Lou is survived by 2 children, Monica (Yves) and Christian (Suzie), 4 adoring grandchildren: George, Catherine, Edward,
and Anne. She is also survived by
her loving sister, Cecelia Ayoup,
with whom she spoke daily.
She was preceded in death by
her beloved husband, Bob, of over
50 years, her sisters Ann Huebe,
Catherine Basil, Jean Newgent,
and brother Joseph E. Rafool.
A funeral was held Thursday,
February 18, at the Jens Family Funeral Home in Manitowoc. Online

Diane Reuter (1942 - 2016)

Diane Cecelia Reuter, 73, of Sheboygan, passed away on
Friday, January 29,
2016 as the result of
a brain hemorrhage,
at St. Lukes Medical
Center in Milwaukee,
surrounded by her
family.
Diane was born
on July 28, 1942 in Waukesha
to William and Virginia (Petrie)
Reseburg. She graduated from
Kohler High School with the class
of 1961. Diane was united in marriage to James Albertin from 1963
to 1993.
On July 16, 2005, she was united in marriage to Frank Reuter.
Diane was employed by Bemis
Manufacturing Company and retired after 36 years in 2005. She
was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Diane was an excellent cook, she loved spending
time with her family and friends,
had a Heart of Gold, was very
compassionate, and was always
there for others. She always put
people before herself almost to a
fault.
Diane is survived by her husband Frank Reuter, by children;
Michelle Mlodzik of Jackson,
Renee (Mark) Lutzke of Oak
Creek, and Jason (Rose) Albertin

was raised in Kohler, WI. Jerry
served four years in the Air Force
during the Vietnam War. He married Shirel Brasch on June 11,
1966. He worked for the Kohler
Company for 28 years, working in
Kohler, WI, Philadelphia, PA, and
Bismarck, ND.
He was an avid collector of vintage cameras and pocket watches.
He enjoyed camping, hunting,
photography, and computers.
Jerry is survived by his wife,

Elizabeth

Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

Gary N. Hart (1929 - 2016)

Gary N. Hart, 86, of
Kohler, died peacefully
at his home on February
15th, 2016.
Gary was born in Hayward, California on May
30th, 1929, to George
and Ella (Nyhof) Hart.
He was a 1946 graduate
of Sheboygan Falls High School.
Gary served with the 11th Army
Airborne as a paratrooper from
1946 to 1948. On November 25th,
1950, he married the love of his
life, Rosaleen Hartmann, in Sheboygan. Rosaleen preceded him
in death on September 17, 2012,
following 61 years of marriage.
Gary was a devoted husband
and father, and spent many happy
hours planning and enjoying family trips across the country. He was
known for his great sense of humor, and will be greatly missed by
his family and many friends.
Gary is survived by one son,
David (Diane) Hart; two daughters, JoAnn (Carl) Hoel and Lin-

da (Peter) Baalke; six

grandchildren
Chuck
Hart, Mike Hart, Carl

contributions to be granted
Collection matches last years total of 73,000 pounds, award for most
pantry items collected by a volunteer group goes to RCS Empowers, up
to $75,000 available for grant requests
SHEBOYGAN, WIThis years
Making Spirits Bright lights show
has passed, but the impact of pantry donations collected is having
a lasting impression. Visitors to
the fourth annual Making Spirits
Bright, by the Sheboygan County
Rotary clubs, contributed 73,000
pounds of items for the ten area
food pantries that comprise the
Sheboygan County Food Bank.
The award for most pantry items
collected at a business location
and contributed to Making Spirits
Bright went to RCS Empowers.
The 73,000 pounds equates
to a four to five month supply
of canned goods and other non
perishable items as an answer to
an ever growing need, said Liz
Kroll, Executive Director of the
Food Bank.
Monetary donations were generous as well so Making Spirits
Bright, Inc. can award grants to

other 501 (c)(3) organizations

from a portion of those contributions. This year that will amount
to a record of up to $75,000.

sources, wreath raffles and Discovery Trolley rides.
An award was also garnered
on behalf of the Making Spirits
Bright event. Gerry Plehn, event
chair, was one of two people selected as the individual volunteer
of the year at the first ever Spirit
of Sheboygan Volunteer Awards.
Making Spirits Bright is provided by the three Sheboygan County
Rotary Clubs as a service to the
communities they serve and beyond. The event incorporates the
assistance of over 600 volunteers
from businesses, churches, organizations and individuals throughout the year. For those interested

a $500 Grant from ExxonMobil
Educational Alliance Program.
Kristin Guske, owner of the Petro
Centers, worked with the principles of the schools to secure the
grant. The grant is made available by ExxonMobil to schools
across the country. As an Exxon
Mobil retailer, the Petro Centers
are proud to help provide extra funding through the grants to
make it possible to provide cur-

rent technology equipment for

students and intensify the learning
of the students in the area of Science Technology. Exxon Mobil
believes that, as members of the
community, retailers are best qualified to work with local educators
to identify schools that could use
extra funds to make learning more
intriguing for the students. The
Petro Centers had to meet certain
criteria before applying for the

The Presidential Preference & Spring Election will be

are required to show a photo ID to vote. You must have

Dont forget that if you are planning to go away on spring

the Kohler Police Department check your house while

you are gone. Residents can request a vacation check online through the Kohler Police Departments web page

ISOMORPHISM - what happens in one part of
the organization is mimicked in other parts
of the organization and creates a phenomenon. When an event occurs at the top level,
isomorphism may significantly benefit the
organization. In this case, boards midyear
evaluation of my performance accomplished
three things:
1. Acknowledged and promoted high
leverage actions on clear goals
2. Challenged my mental models and
stimulated divergent thinking
3. Triangulated different perspectives,
ideas and resources to arrive at better
solution.
Playing forward, mimicking throughout the
organization influences how we think, how

we do things, and what we accomplish. It is

clear the board is creating an organizational

Elementary Principals Report

McKenna Holzrichter, a 5th grader in Mrs.
Bartelts class, organized a book drive. We
collected 2,435 books to give to The Next Door
Foundations Books for Kids program based
in Milwaukee. The winning classes were
Mrs. Roeber and Mrs. Bitter. Both classes
will receive a pizza party for their outstanding
efforts.
The Elementary School has qualified to
continue to move to a Tier II PBIS (Positive
Behavior Intervention and Support) program. The Tier II program will assist us
to give more individualized attention and
strategies to students who may need more
guidance with behavior expectations.
We continue to monitor the learning process
and student progress with our PALS and MAP
testing. Both of these assessments will be
finished by mid February.
MS-HS Principal Report (Timothy Brown)
We had a successful end to the first semester. When comparing the same months in
2014 as 2015, we have seen a total reduction
of 25% of our students that have at least
one tardy and a 41% reduction in the total

number of tardy students. When we have

students to class on time, this lessens reductions to our learning environment, allows
teachers, and students, to begin classes
immediately without disruption the net result
is increased student achievement.
This achievement can clearly be seen in
our Exam Exemption policy. Of the 220 high
school students, 178 qualified for the exam
exemption based on three or fewer tardies,
twenty seven or fewer missed class periods,
and zero unexcused absences. Our goal was
that 80% of our students would earn the
exam exemption, and we have a success rate
of 81% qualifying. Our students and learning
community at the high school should be proud
of our successes.
We will be further digging into the data at the
end of this week when we have final grades
posted, but our preliminary indicators that
we are having a high number of students
passing their classes and are well on track to
graduate. This, again speaks volumes to the
learning environment that everyone, students,
teachers and community members can take
great pride in.
At the middle school we also found great success based on our data collection. As stated
earlier, we firmly believe that when students
are in class at the bell and prepared to learn
that we have set up the correct parameters
to ensure a healthy environment. At the end
of semester 1, 86% of our middle school
students had one or fewer tardies. Only 13
students had 2 or more. This is phenomenal data that demonstrates our successful
climate.
Finally we have begun the task of preparing
our school for success for the 2016-17 school
year. We are in the process of reviewing
our course scope and sequence of our class
offerings and making important modifications

Child Development Day

All resident children who will be at least 3 years old

What: The development of all early childhood children living in the Kohler School District will be screened
through parent report, direct assessment, and observation. Parents will also be able to register for
the 2016/2017 4K Program (must be at least 4 years
old on 9/1/16 to register).
Why:

Screening helps identify if a child is developing appropriately cognitively, physically and emotionally.
During screening, children will work with a professional in a play-based format to assess their development. School professionals will also be available
to answer questions parents may have about their
childs development and/or the 4K program. In addition, information about a variety of community resources will be available.

This year, 51 students in grades 9-12 were members of the Kohler High School Math Team. Students met
weekly at lunch to work on their problem-solving skills and then showcased their skills at four math meets
this season. Kohlers top ten point earners were: Archie Brohn, Nathan Waniorek, George Palof, Zac Hoell, Lauren Horth, Hank Biznek, Jim Conklin, Ashley Thyes, Angela Schmitt, and Kyoko Ikeda. George
Palof had a stellar first season on the team, placing in all four meets this year.

Kohler mid-winter
music concerts
The Kohler high school band and choir will present their Mid-Winter
Music Concert on Tuesday, March 15. This concert begins at 7:30 p.m.
in the Kohler Memorial Theater.
On Thursday, March 17, the Kohler middle school band and choir
will present their Mid-Winter Music Concert. The concert, featuring the
middle school bands and choirs, will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Kohler
Memorial Theater.
The choirs are directed by Lori Hucke and the bands are under the
direction of Richard Tengowski. Both concerts are free and open to the
public.

Kohler Performing
Arts to host dinner
and auction
Plans are underway for the 19th annual Kohler Performing Arts Organization dinner and auction on Saturday, April 23 at the Pine Hills
Country Club. This years theme is Lets Get Reel and will include
performances by the Kohler high school music students, silent auction,
three-course dinner and a live auction.
Everyone is welcome to attend the event. Parents of music students
can pick up their invitations at one of the upcoming concerts. Invitations can also be picked up at the library, school office or from the
music department. Invitations and reservations can also be found on the
