lesson without a personal discussion.

What Teachers Do:

What Students do:

Minds on: Motivational Hook/engagement /introduction (5-15 min)

Establish a positive learning environment, connect to prior learning, set the context for learning, pre-determine key questions to
guide lesson
Time: _10:10_-_10:15__ (Indicate time breakdown of
instructional elements)

Ok. boys and girls I would like you to turn and talk
to the person sitting next to you. I want you to tell
each other who is responsible for the chores in the
home? (taking out the garbage, making the bed,
cleaning/taking care of the family pet) you have 2
mins.and than we will share some of your chores.

Alicia: my dad is responsible for the garbage and my

sister and I are responsible for taking care of Charles
our dog.
Grayson: I am responsible for emptying the
dishwasher and my sister is responsible for filling it.

Thank-you for sharing. Similar to family homes

where chores need to be divided in order for them
to get completed. Canada has many responsibilities
that also need to be divided so that everything is
taken care of.
Action: During /working on it (time given for each component, suggested 15-40 min)
Introduce new learning or extend/reinforce prior learning, provide opportunities for practice & application of learning

Time: ___10:15___-__10:45_____ (Indicate time breakdown of

instructional elements)

Does anyone know, how many levels of government

are there in Canada? and what are the 3 levels of
government? (municipal, provincial, federal) Lets
look at what the municipal government is
responsible for (they deal with issues concerning
their community such as public parks, libraries,
garbage removal) Can some one give another
example of municipal responsibility? Municipal
governments are led by mayors in cities and towns.
Whos our mayor in Orillia?
What do do you think the provincial government
responsible for? (education, health care, the
environment, agriculture, and highways) Where do
you they meet to discuss provincial issues?
Federal Government is responsible for Canada as a
whole country such as international relations,
immigration, criminal law, taxes, national defence,
and foreign policy. Does anyone know who the
leader of Canada is? If I wanted to build a house
which level of government do I need to go talk to
for authorization? and how do you know? Where do
they meet?

Amber: local police, fire services, recycling, and

public transportation.
Jack: Steve Clark
Ocean: Justin Trudeau
T.J: Municipal because you live in that area so you
need authorization from your town or city.

Great jobs boys and girls! We are going for a 20 min.

walk, I would like you to pair up, each group will
have a camera. I would like you to take photos of
signs, vehicles, or symbols things that identify
various levels of government in the community. On
the smart board I have responsibility list that I
would like you to appropriately put under which
government is responsible for addressing these
issues.
**** Now that we are back in the classroom you and
your partner will have to sort out the pictures that
you took and put it under the appropriate
government responsibility. Dont forget the list on
the smart board as well. You can be as creative as
you like to illustrate your understanding. What we
dont finish today we can finish tomorrow ******
Consolidation & Connection (Reflect and Connect) (5-15 min.)
Help students demonstrate what they have learned, provide opportunities for consolidation and reflection
Time: ___10:45__-__10:50_____ (Indicate time breakdown of
instructional elements)

Is anyone done sorting and labelling that would like

to share what they have done?

Emily & James: We drew word web for each level of

government and what they are responsible for.
Kendra & Spencer: we had 3 column for the 3 levels
of government. Under each column is a list of what
they are responsible for.
