Title:

Enzymes

Date:

Aim:

To investigate enzyme activity under different pH conditions

Introduction:

(What are enzymes, and how they function? Also name the enzyme found in potato)

Materials/Apparatus: Sodium Hydroxide, Ethanoic acid, Hydrogen Peroxide

Diagram:
Method:

1. Cut a uncooked potato into small pieces and crush it.

2. Prepare four (4) test tubes. Place equal amount of crushed potato in three separate
test tubes and label the test tubes A-D.
3. Add Sodium hydroxide solution to test tube A, distilled water to test
tube B, Ethanoic acid (vinegar) to test tube C and distilled water to test tube D.
(Ensure equal volume of solution is added to each test tube)
4. Add equal volume of Hydrogen Peroxide into all test tubes (A-D).
5. Observe all test tubes for changes. Measure the height of the foam, if any is present
and record the data in a table.

Results:

(In a table, with correct heading and appropriate title)

Discussion:

-Discussion MUST be based on your observation/results

Explanation for results seen in test tubes A to D (4 marks)

Variables:

(Independent and dependent variables)

Sources of Errors/Limitation: State at least two

Conclusion:

(Theory: Catalase is a common enzyme found in nearly all living organisms that are exposed to oxygen,
where it functions to catalyze the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide to water and oxygen. Hydrogen
peroxide is harmful to cells in high concentrations. {Catalase can be found in potato.} )
