BYU-Idaho Preschool Lesson Plan

Lesson Plan #21

Lab #4
Bread
Date:
Monday November 16, 2015
Supervisor:
Amy Eliason
Lead Teacher: Clarah Camp

Childrens Names and Learning/Development Goals:

1. Jakub- His goal is to be engaged and stay at gathering time or small
focus. Jakub really likes hands on activities, and when we make bread
for our small focus he will be able to make something with his hands
and be engaged.
2. Gratton- His goal is to work on his fine motor skills. There will be a lot
of measuring and mixing in this lesson. For art we will be making fake
bread and using tweezers to pick up the ingredient, this will help with
his fine motor skills.
3. Lindsey- Her goal is to learn to count to 20. Since we will be measuring
and mixing certain amounts this will be a great opportunity to have
Lindsey practice and learn her numbers.
4. Lucy- her goal is to socialize. By being bakers she will be able to
interact with her peers through dramatic play.
5. Hunter- his goal is to get ready for kindergarten and learn how to be in
a structured setting. During gathering time when the baker comes he
will have to sit and listen to what the baker is saying, and not talk
during the presentation.
6. Michael- His goal is to write the alphabet. We will be writing
instructions and recipes. Here he will be able to practice writing his
letters.
Preassessment and Findings:
I asked Hunter how bread was made and he didnt know how.
There was bread in the dramatic play, and Eve carries it around and
didnt know what kind of bread the loaf was.
AJ wanted to know where bread came from and if the store made it
themselves.
Lindsey was playing with the bread in the dramatic play and Lindsey
didnt know the different uses for bread and what it is used for
When I asked Tanner who made bread he said his mom and the grocery
store.
I was playing with Kallie and were trying to see which different types of
bread that she had eaten and she has only eaten white.
I asked Sammie what her favorite things to eat were on bread, she
could only think of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and toast. She
also knew that you put butter on bread
I was playing with Kambry and when asked about bread she didnt

know about the different ingredient of bread and didnt understand

how it was made or where it came from.
Ideas to be Emphasized:

1. There are many different types of bread

2. Bakers make bread
3. Bread is made with flour, sugar, yeast, water, oil, salt and eggs.

Bread, Bread, Bread by Ann Morris (WR PM1)
Bread and Jam for Frances by Russell and Lillian Hoban (IWP)
Activity Description: There will be the first letters of the name of the children and they will trace
the letter multiple times with a dry erase marker. They can easily erase and do it over again to
become more familiar with their name and writing their letters. (paper in closet, markers in
Suannes office)
Child Objective: Children will identify their name and be able to recognize the first letter of their
name by tracing it atleast 5 times.

*Bread Monsters
(3)

Activity Description: There will be bread

dough laid out on the table. There will be
different things that the children can put in

can make various shapes and they will realize
how to shape dough and how to knead it.

Rhodes Rolls (IWP)

Raisins (IWP)
Chocolate Chips (IWP)
Nuts (IWP)
Buttons (RR1)

and how the materials can communicate an

idea or action. ( IELG D1 G14 CI7)
Manipulatives:
Magnetic
Letters
(2)

Activity Description: The magnetic letters

will be out with the chalk board so that they
can draw and trace the letters as well as stick
them onto the chalk board to create letter
awareness. The magnetic drawing letters will
also be out to help children learn how to form
their letters.
Child Objective: Child will identify and trace
the letters of the alphabet to increase letter
awareness.

Magnetic letters (RR1)

*Math: How to
measure (2) @

Activity Description: Have measuring cups

and different ingredients that the children can
measure and put into the scales. They can
measure and see which objects are heavier
than others. They will be comparing the
different types of plastic bread, Ziploc bag of
flour, sugar and yeast.
Child Objective: Children will compare
several objects based on one or more
attributes (length, size, weight) using words
such as "shorter: and "shortest," "bigger and
"lighter using scales and various measuring

that yeast makes things become bigger and
that yeast is a main ingredient in bread to
make it rise.
Child Objective: Actively engages in play and
putting materials together to test end results
by being able to observe and measure a
chemical reaction that proves yeast is a living
bacteria.
(IELG D1 G1 CI:7)

Activity Name
Review- Bread
Tasting

Description

Materials

Have 3 different loaves of bread, Wheat, White, and

Sourdough. We will cut into each loaf of bread and see what it
looks like on the inside of the bread. We will go over the
different types of bread that they have. There will be bags of
bread around the room that they will be able to taste the
bread and we will make a chart comparing the types of bread
that taste the best. We will then discuss the chart and which
type of bread we liked the most and which bread we like the
least.

Bug in a Rug

I will have the children close their eyes, and then I will pick
someone to come up and hide under the blanket. The
children will then have to figure out who is under the
blanket and call them by name by saying Bug, bug, under
the rug
I will have a box and in my box there will pairs of pictures that
are familiar rhyming. For example; Hat/bat, chair/bear and all
of the children will sit in a circle. One child will come up to the
teacher and pull a picture out of the box. They will state what
the picture is and then they will try to find a word the rhymes
with. Each child will get a turn. This will help the children start
to recognize the sounds in the words that rhyme.

Read The Red Hen. Read the book to them and ask various
questions that help them remember how to make the bread
and the different types of bread.

The children will be able to roll the motion dice and then they
will do the motion that it tells them to do. The children will
take turns with the block and the teacher will pick the next
person.
I will read the Rainbow fish by Marcus Pfister. I will ask the
children if they have ever had anything that they had to
share, that they didnt want to. We will discuss sharing and
how that is respectful to our classmates.
