Philosophy Paper
I believe the role of a teacher is to facilitate learning by helping students
formulate meaningful questions and devise strategies to answer those questions. Teachers
should value and nurture students intellectual and social growth, especially the pursuit of
wisdom. It is necessary to teach the curriculum and assess, but teachers should focus
more on helping students connect to the world around them.
Teachers should impart knowledge and help guide children in creative and
insightful ways. When I was in high school my history teacher taught the curriculum, but
made references to what was happening in the world around me. He would go back and
forth between the past and the present, which helped me form real connections between
the curriculum I was taught and the events I witnessed happening around me. The classes
that formed connections to everyday life were the classes I remember the most.
I believe it is important for a teacher to be enthusiastic about teaching, and the
curriculum that is taught. When a teacher is excited about what he or she is teaching, the
students are eager and motivated to learn. I believe the teacher should not be glued to the
front of the room, but should be walking around the room and alert. I also believe it is
important for a teacher to get to know his or her students, and to be mindful of the
students needs. It is important to set high standards for students, and to believe in your
students. I think that if teachers held students to higher standards and believed in them
they would rise to meet those standards.

The role of a teacher is to teach all students. Teaching diverse students learners
who differ not only culturally and linguistically but also in their cognitive abilities can be
challenging. The teacher must focus on the students individual needs and develop
methods to addresses the students weaknesses. Differentiating instruction can be time
consuming, but a growing body of research shows positive results for full implementation
of differentiated instruction. Teachers should be able to teach to students multiple
intelligences and different learning styles. Teachers should embrace and celebrate
differences in learning style, and value diversity.
It is the teachers responsibility to communicate with parents, and to interact with
the family and the community. Parents play a crucial role in a childs education, so it is
important that the teacher involve and communicate with parents. A teacher should
establish and create a safe environment for his or her students. A teacher should know her
students and their cultures and be able to use that knowledge to help the students learn
and become successful.
Overall, all children can learn and that students must be invested in what they are
learning. Knowledge is gained through individual experience as John Dewey said,
children learn by doing The student should be the center of learning, and not the
teacher. I think that students learn best when they want to learn. Teachers should fan the
flames of curiosity so students will want to learn for themselves. As a lifelong learner, I
desire to continue to grow professionally. I know that I have much to learn and discover
as I advance in my career. As I become more experienced, I expect to grow and develop
in conjunction with my students.
