Analysis on the strength of the dollar and the effects on international students
The images that that will be analyzed in this document follow the main topic and capture
the idea of an International Student. This analysis will constitute of the detailed revision of the
rhetorical elements ethos, pathos and logos. Other elements to be mentioned in this analysis are
the purpose of the image, the audience characteristics, and the message it conveys along the
strategies utilized by the author to achieve its purpose. This analysis will be done with two
images and the relation of them to the topic.

Purpose of the Image and its Message

The first image, Figure 1, called Puente Internacional Cordova Americas is used by the
author to clearly reflect the amount of people that is constantly traveling from Mexico to its
neighbor country, United States. This type of relations has opened the door for these countries to
share more than just a border, people and their activities are shared as well. This evident quantity
can also represent the amount of Mexican international students that have to travel every day or
those who live in the United States and sometimes travel to Mexico to meet their relatives. The
second image, Figure 2, International Students shows the author intentions of depicting that a
great amount and diversity of people constitute the community of international students.
Different cultures are united by this common interest of studying in the United States in where
they can achieve different opportunities and can fulfill their dreams.

Audience Characteristics
Since these images make a social commentary in the way of life of people. They are
likely to be targeted to those who are interested in having affairs inside of the United States,
those who want to form part of the community of international students, those who are worried
by the amount of people traveling to the US and those who are interested on international
relation and studies.
Ethos
The ethos element in these social commentaries is quite special. Given that the ethos
element on these images give a neutral position to the controversies of the traffic between
borders and the benefits or disadvantages that international students carry, the ethos behind these
images can only be interpreted by the subject, giving this quality a subjective view rather than an
objective one. The portray of the subjects on the second image can give the audience a guide on
how to interpret the ethos element without really stating one in the image, this gives the
opportunity to mold the ethos differently by any individual.
Pathos
The pathos element in both images is quite singular, but they share a common emotion. Both
images makes the audience understand the quantity and diversity of the people that are entering
the US, this by itself can divide the opinions of the viewers. As there are people that fear that all
this people may take away the privileges, others may be amused and joyful of how the
interactions between different countries has grown so much as to be capable of sharing
knowledge through tourism and specially through students.

Logos
The logos element in the first image, Figure 1, is present in a strong manner. The image
has been taken in an angle in which you can feel familiar with that moment how the view from
those who are trying to enter the US is completely different from those who live in the other side,
how they need to go through a long line, to have an opportunity to change their lives. The second
image, Figure 2, present this picture of smiling students from different countries holding the
American flag, they try to represent the happiness they feel with this opportunity that has been
presented to them. The second image complements the first one as it shows how happiness is
present after crossing the border.
Strategy
Both images influence in the way audience feels about this interaction between people
and countries, they use different resources to represent quantity. The first image, is commonly
utilized to represent the traffic and how much time it takes someone to cross the border in their
car. Universities and other organizations to represent a warm welcome to international students
commonly utilize the second image. Although these images do not share a common goal, they
can be utilized to complement each other as explained in the logos analysis.
The analysis of these images concludes that both images have a strong influence in the
message they are trying to portray individually. Putting together this both images can also
strongly portray the situation of international students, especially those who come from Mexico
and have to constantly endure long lines and traffic so they can have a chance to grow and
improve their life conditions with knowledge and hard work.
