Students Prior Knowledge:


- Broad knowledge of different types of natural
disasters and how they are caused. E.g.
Volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, cyclones,
floods etc.

Specific knowledge of one particular type of


natural disaster: where they commonly occur,
how often they occur, why they occur and the
impact they have on society

Students have researched in depth the specific


details and information of a certain natural
disaster even that has occurred at any time in
history

Students have created a storyboard for their


iMovie they are making. They will follow the
sequence and use the iMovie effects to create
it.

As a result of this lesson, students will be able to:
Use the ICT tool iMovie to create a news report on their chosen natural disasters
Work collaboratively as a group to produce a news report where each member has contributed equally
Have a further understanding of what their Newspaper will focus on.
Teachers Prior Preparation/Organisation:
1. Make sure students have access to iMovie
2. News report video on a natural disaster
3. Video camera
4. Props for news segment incase students forget

Provision for students at educational risk:


1. Block apps or websites that may be a
disturbance or distraction to students with
learning disabilities
2. Place student with English as their second
language with other students who have
previously demonstrated strong literacy skills


3. Place students who are visually impaired
closer to the front to ensure they know how to
use iMovie

Motivation and Introduction:


1. Have students sitting in their groups (previously allocated)

2. Play the video of the news report


- Students should base their news report on the style
3. Explain what they need to have in order to collect a camera.
- materials (costumes, backdrops etc.)

4. Students need to log on to the class Weebly to see the layout of the
lesson.
- Tell the students to refer back to the Weebly if they have any
questions, if the Weebly doesnt answer their question then ask the
teacher.

Lesson Steps (Lesson content, structure, strategies & Key Questions):


1. Students are to grab the necessary materials
- They have collected over time in relation to the time period of their
natural disaster
2. Hand out cameras to students who are ready to film and who have all
the items they need:
- materials
- storyboard


- script
3. Students are to film their news reports for the duration of the lesson
4. If students need extra time to film their news report more time will be
allocated

Lesson Closure:(Review lesson objectives with students)


1. Students make sure that the footage is on a computer and saved.
2. They hand back the cameras and pack away their station.
3. Once all the cameras are returned students sit at their desks awaiting
instructions
- This is the time where the teacher asks the students how much
filming the students still have to get done, as a class they decide how
much extra time they need to film the rest of their news report.
4. The students that finish the filming will move straight on to editing
using Final Cut Pro.

Transition: (What needs to happen prior to the next lesson?)


1. Students need to be aware of how much filming they need to do for
the next lesson if at all.
- If the students need to do more filming then the time limit allows,
they can meet up in their own time but have to organise it with the
teacher.
2. Students need to meet up with their group to talk about what they
need to do in order to complete the news report.
- They assign roles for each other that needs to be completed.
