Karagre vasathe Lakshmi

Prabhathe kara darsanam
Meaning:
This is a morning prayer dedicated to the three Goddesses. Lakshmi,
the Goddess of wealth, resides at the tip of the fingers. Saraswathi, the Goddess
of knowledge and learning, resides in the middle of the palm and at the base of
the palm resides Durga, the Goddess of strength and valour who protects us
from evil. Visualizing in this manner we should look at our palm early in the
morning and pray to the three Devis
Explanation of the meaning
Goddess Lakshmi resides at the tip of the hands. Lakshmi is the Goddess of
wealth and prosperity. Healthwise it is said that Health is Wealth. In Telugu
Arogyame Mahabhagyam. The nails and tips of the hands should be clean so
that no harmful bacteria can enter into our mouth. the importance of frequent
washing hands should be taught to children. Nail biting, chewing fingers are to
be discouraged. Do we keep our puja place dirty?
Explain to the Children that Goddess Lakshmi does not reside in dirty
nails and hands. If we want health, wealth and prosperity we should cultivate the
habit of keeping the hands always clean.
It is not enough if we have plenty of money. We must also know how to utilize
it in a proper way. For this we need knowledge and discrimination. Therefore
we need the blessings of Goddess Saraswathi.

If we are weak and no strength to discharge our duties properly, then what is
the use of money and knowledge? So we need the blessings of Goddess
Durga also. She gives us strength and power.

The prettiest hands

Story

Once God sent his angel in search of the prettiest hands. He said, go
and bring to me a man from the earth, who has the prettiest hand!.
The angel came upon the earth at midnight thinking that all the people
would be at rest and his work would become easy as he could observe their
hands from a very close distance.
The angel first entered the palace for he thought that who else except
the queen could have pretty hands. Her hands would be well looked after the
application of creams and decorated with jewellery. When he entered the queens
chamber he could smell something unpleasant in the air. He understood that it
was the smell of the bad actions done by the queen. Her hands had done so
many cruel things. Same was the case with the king.
The angel then visited the nobles, knights and the merchants thinking that their
hands may have performed good deeds and thus would have acquired beauty.
But he was greatly disappointed.
Then, he turned towards the monastery quite happy with the thought that at
least one of the monks may have pretty hands. But, alas! There too he was
disappointed. Under the priesthood, he saw their hands having committed many
sins. They were also full of ego, and so the angel was very sad.
With a heavy heart, he came to the open fields and sat under a tree. He began
to think to himself how he would show his face to the Lord without having
completed the task allotted to him. Then suddenly he smelt a lovely fragrance
which wafted towards him from somewhere. He looked around but there were
neither flower trees nor any fragrant plants. From where then was this lovely
fragrance coming? The angel searched all around in the dark. There he saw a
farmer at a distance, sleeping on the ground on his mat in the open fields. The
angel bent near him and what did he see? He saw the palms of the farmer,

though brown and rough, were shining with a glow! He looked at the face of the
farmer. It was quite wrinkled and tanned. The farmer was fast asleep. From his
palms wafted a lovely fragrance and the atmosphere was cool and pleasant.
The angel carried the farmer to God. But he was quite puzzled. He
asked God how the farmer could have prettier hands than the king and the
queen. God was pleased to see that the farmer was thankful to God for giving
him two strong hands to work with. He also knew that his hands were merely
tools and that he had to use this tool given to him by God. The farmer used his
hands to gain knowledge and to give that knowledge to others. He used them to
toil in the fields and to grow corn and thus become prosperous. He also used
them to give away corn to the needy. He healed others wounds with his hands.
He was never proud of his achievements but always folded his palms before
the Lord. Thus, the farmer acquired knowledge, wealth and prosperity through
his own efforts and now with those noble deeds, he had reached the Lord and
had merged with him. Thus, the farmer had attained Godhood.
The story reveals that the God never gets impressed by the outward
show or pomp. Hands are given to do good work, service to the needy and for
prayer. It is of no purpose, if they are just decorated with jewelllery, groomed
and scented. That is why the hands of queen, king, nobles, knights etc smelled
foul and rejected. The hands which are put to proper use by the farmer were
considered to be the prettiest by God.
