Lesson Duration
Dental Eggs

Lesson Overview
February is National Childrens Dental Health Month. The students will be observing
how the effects of bacteria in your mouth can affect the enamel on your teeth with a
similar experiment using hard-boiled eggs and vinegar. The students will get to see and
feel how the vinegar affects the eggs outer shell. The outer shell will be the
representation of the enamel on their teeth. They will describe and compare the original
egg to the one that has been soaking in vinegar over night.
Central Focus (Enduring Understandings)
The purpose of this lesson is to give kids the opportunity to see and feel how vinegar
(similar to the bacteria in your mouth) can change the outer shell of the egg (similar to
the enamel on your teeth). this lesson is to inform and share the importance of oral
hygiene (i.e. Brushing and flossing every night)
Essential Question(s)
The big idea of the lesson stated as a question or questions
What does the shell do for the egg? (protects the soft inside, etc.)
Is this similar to the enamel on your teeth?
Why do you think your teeth are covered in enamel?
Do you remember what the soft inside of your teeth is called? (dentin)?
What would happen if the enamel was damaged or had holes in it?
Content Standard(s)/Benchmark
The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) or Hawaii Content & Performance
Standards III (HCPS III) that align with the central focus and address essential
understandings, concepts, and skills

K.P.2.1 Understand how objects are described based on their physical properties and how
they are used. Classify objects by observable physical properties (including size, color,

Prior Academic Knowledge and Student Assets
They should already be familiar with the daily routine and the importance of brushing
and flossing their teeth day and night.

Instructional Strategies and Learning Tasks

Coming back from lunch, teacher will do a quick breathing exercise to help them
calm down and become ready to learn. Have them gather on the learning rug.
Teacher will start with a story or book related to dental hygiene, provided by
Wonders.
After reading teacher will lead a small discussion about what they learned and
also the importance of keeping a clean mouth.
Also review some of the key vocabulary such as enamel and bacteria.
Have students form a semi circle facing the teacher and teacher will take out the
egg experiment previously done one day ahead.
Teacher will explain what an experiment is, and what experiment was performed
in order to see how bacteria affects the enamel
Prepared, have one regular hard boiled egg in one hand and one soaked over
night egg in the other.
Ask students if they can physically see a difference in the eggs already (look
closely but dont touch yet)
Then one by one let them feel the difference (explain that you must be gentle
with the egg so that it doesnt crack or break)
Review with them how it felt and how it was different.
As a class create a T-chart of before and after affects on the eggs outer shell.
(everyone must speak)
Move onto worksheet activity. Explain instructions pair or group them up. G-O.
GO.
Walk around from group to group make sure they are on task and performing
teamwork. Clarify any instructions or misunderstandings if needed.

Differentiation and Accommodations

TYPE OF LEARNER

Struggling

List the type of accommodation or differentiation (learning

environment, content, process, or performance task) and
describe how you will differentiate.
This assignment involves mostly visual learning. I would
provide scaffold instruction to activity if needed.

This assignment involves mostly visual learning. I would

provide scaffold instruction to activity if needed. Purposely pair
them up with a student that can help them out.

Accelerated

If completed early, I would have them attempt to label the

foods to practice spelling skills.
