Department of Human Resources

City and County of San Francisco
San Francisco, CA 94103
Dear Sir/Madam,

I would like to apply for a summer internship at the City and County of San Francisco. The following areas
listed in the internship posting primarily interest to me: construction management, structural and civil
engineering, and architecture.

I am currently working towards a degree in architectural engineering at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. I am
interested in this field because I believe it is really important to be able to master the inner workings and
components of how a structure is put together in order to fully understand how to make it more user friendly,
cost efficient, and environmentally responsible. I am aware that these are goals that departments such as the
San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency strive for, with the aim of streamlining the inevitable
congestion that comes with living and working in such a dynamic, one-of-a-kind city. The Public Works
Department has already outlined a Strategic Plan and a Climate Action Plan, both aimed at fulfilling the main
goal of making San Francisco a a beautiful, livable, vibrant, safe and sustainable city (to quote from the
Public Works webpage). This kind of forward-thinking aspirations mirrors those that I myself have for big
cities, where there is so much potential to improve problems like pollution and waste by simply doing
construction differently.

Classes that I have taken at Cal Poly have helped me developed some useful skillsets in relation to engineering
and construction. In architecture classes, I worked on the process of designing and construction a tent
dwelling (that we lived in!) for both design and functionality, thus applying some of my theoretical knowledge
that I had been taught to a real-world situation. And in my construction management classes, I have
developed drafting and digital modelling skills in addition to learning about materials, scheduling, and other
aspects of construction. I feel that your position focuses on some similar areas of study and practice, so
having the privilege of serving as an intern with you would give me the further exposure I need to advance in
my college education and career.

My tentative career goal is to work in structural engineering and construction, which is why I believe this is a
special opportunity for me to gain experience under the guidance of licensed professionals who are working
on the cutting edge of innovation here in the Bay Area. I would be thrilled to have a chance to contribute to
the changes and improvements being made, because every webpage and action plan I have browsed really
shows me that these projects are serious endeavors that are already starting to make a difference in San
Francisco.

I look forward to hearing from you via email at josephmartin.0727@gmail.com or phone call at (408) 3485706 about the possibility of an interview so that I can embark on a journey towards being a part of fulfilling
San Franciscos visions.
Sincerely,

Joseph Martin
