Assessment Goals

To provide Lily Bee with the appropriate

services and supports to effectively meet
issues that negatively impact academics

What are some biases you had going into the

interview?

That the student would withhold information

or not be truthful to look good
That I could not make a connection with the
student
That the student would fear the information
shared with me would be shared with
support staff (therefore providing more
reason to withhold information or not be
truthful)

What were some value differences between you and the client?

Lily Bee took a lot of pride in her bond with

her family; cousins, sisters, aunts (some
biological and some not). She had a strong
connection with her cousin because she
could understand things from her
perspective. Lily Bees behavior is
influenced by those in her surroundings.
Unlike myself Lily Bee tends to depend on
her close family bond as an emotional
support system

What events or life experiences have shaped them into the person they are?

Death of caretaker in 2014

Relationship with her sister (current
caretaker), gained trust of her sister,
unfortunately deceased 3/14/2016
Several open CPS cases
Relationship with her cousin
Belief in God
School Support Staff

What is the staff recommendation about diagnosis, interventions or

treatment?

That Lily Bee receive grief counseling as a

service with the mental health counselor
from the school (case was previously closed
with NC Mentor) and that outside services
be sought.
Accommodations be made by Lily Bees
teacher to complete missing assignments.

What does research say on their

diagnosis/problem/treatment?

Children who had a parent who died suddenly have three times the risk of depression than
those with two living parents, along with an increased risk for post-traumatic stress disorder
(https://www.chronicle.pitt.edu/story/science-technology-sudden-death-parent-boosts-riskdepression-surviving-children)

Diagnosed depression was associated with a 0.49 point, or half a letter grade, decrease in
student GPA (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16278502)

Some studies have found that foster children perform more poorly on academic achievement
test, have poorer grades and higher rates of grade retention and special education placement
(https://www.princeton.edu/futureofchildren/publications/journals/article/index.xml?
journalid=40&articleid=133&sectionid=874)

Children placed in kinship care experience more stability than those placed in non foster care .
Overall, children in kinship care tend to have fewer placements and experience less
placement disruption ( http://www.practicenotes.org/v20n1/kinship.htm

North Carolinas school-based CFST initiative allows schools to create coordinated health care
plans so that every student receives the support she/he needs to achieve academic success
(www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3415796/)
