RAFT TASK CARD: Vocabulary/Spelling


Objective:
Students will be able to understand the definition of each spelling
vocabulary word.
Student Role:
Actor- Student will act out the vocabulary word.
Audience:
Active audience- The remainder of the class will try to guess what
vocabulary word the actor is acting out.
Format:
Roll play- The format of this activity is using acting and roll play to
demonstrate the meaning or the action of each vocab word.
Topic:
Charades- Students will demonstrate how well they know their spelling
words by acting them out and guessing the right word to match the
acting.
Directions:
1. Each student will pull a vocabulary word of a hat.
2. The first person will go up in front of the class and act out the
vocabulary word they have in front of them.
3. The remaining students may raise their hand and guess what
vocab word they are acting out.
4. After the vocabulary word has been established students must
post what they think is the definition to our class poll.
*Note I will have a list of the vocabulary words on a smart board in
case students have not memorized all the words.
Resources:
Use spelling book before class to study the vocabulary words

Objective:
Students will be able to spell words correctly.
Students Role:
Letters- A group of students will be wearing a paper letter
Audience:
Problem solvers- The remaining students are to try to put the students
wearing a letter in order to spell a word
Format:
Scramble- The format used in this activity is a human game of
scramble
Topic:

Unscrambling letters to make a word- Students will do their best to


unscramble the letters in order to create a vocabulary word
Directions:
1. Each student will be assigned a letter and a group
2. The first group of students will have 30 seconds to scramble
themselves up. They will stand in front of the class quietly.
3. The remaining of the class will raise their hand and move one
letter to its proper place in the spelling word.
4. Once the word has been completely unscrambled the students
must respond to the class poll with the correct spelling of the
word and its proper definition.
Resources:
Students will need to review the vocabulary words in the book before
class.

Objective:
Find hidden letters around the classroom in order to form a vocabulary
word.
Student role:
Pirates- The pirates are on a mission to find the gold (letters) in order
to create a vocabulary word
Audience:
British guards- The guards will protect the letters from being found.
Format:
Scavenger hunt- The format of this activity will be a scavenger hut
where students will look for letters around the classroom in order to
form vocabulary words
Topic:
Finding the golden letters around the class to create a vocabulary
word.
Directions:
1. Each student will be placed in a small group.
2. The group will all together look around the classroom and
try to find the hidden letters in order to create a word.
3. Once the group has found a word they must take a picture
and send them to the class poll. From there I will make sure
the words are being spelt correctly.

Resources:
Students must review the vocabulary words before class begins.
If students have a phone they may bring it to class in order to take
pictures.
