My Target
At the end of this activity, you will gain competence in differentiating the
characteristics and needs of learners from different developmental levels.

MyMap
To reach your target, do the following tasks:

Step 1
Observe 3 groups of learners
from different levels
(preschool, elementary, and
high school)
Step 2
Describe each of the learners
based on your observations

Step 3
Validate your observation
by interviewing the
learners.
Step 4
Compare them in terms of
their interests and needs.

My Tools

Use the activity form provided for you to document your observations.

An Observation Guide for the CLASSROOM VISIT

Read the following statements carefully. Then write your observation report
on the provided space. Your teacher may also recommend another observation
checklist if a more detailed observation is preferred.
Physical
1. Observe their gross motor skills. How they carry themselves? How they move,
walk, run, go up the stairs, etc.?
2. Are gross movements clumsy or deliberate/smooth?
3. How about their fine motor skills? Writing, drawing, etc.
Social
1. Describe how they interact with teachers and other adults.
2. Note how they also interact with peers. What do they talk about? What are their
concerns?
Emotional
1. Describe the emotional disposition or temperament of the learners. (happy, sad,
easily cries, mood-shifts)
2. How do they express their wants/needs? Can they wait?
3. How do they handle frustrations?
4. Describe their level of confidence as shown in their behaviour. Are they selfconscious?
Cognitive
1. Describe their ability to use words to communicate their ideas. Note: their
language proficiency.
2. Describe how they figure out things. Do they comprehend easily? Look for
evidence of their thinking skills.
3. Where there opportunities for problem solving? Describe how did they show
problem solving abilities

Learners Development Matrix

Record the data you gathered about the learners characteristics and needs in this
matrix. This will allow you to compare the characteristics and needs of learners at

different levels. The items under each domain are by no means exhaustive. These are just
sample indicators. You may add other aspects which you may have observed.

They can solve

consistently.

MyAnalysis
Write the most salient developmental characteristics of the learners you observed.
Based on these child characteristics, think of implications for the teacher.
Example:

Salient Characteristics

Preschool

Pre-schoolers like to move

around a lot.

Implications to the
Teaching-Learning
Process

Therefore, the teacher

should remember to use
music and movement
activities not just in PE but
in all subject areas.
Therefore, teachers should
not expect pre-schoolers to
stay seated for a long period
of time.

Implications to the TeachingLearning Process

Preschool

High School
Age Range of Learners

High school students are

very aggressive in times
of competition of their
schools. They are like to
enhance their skills. They
join everything together
for the praises they can
get from the other person.

So that the teacher should remember to

give praise the things that students can
make for him.
So that the teachers should be a part to
enhance their students skills.

MyReflections
1. While you were observing the learners, did you recall your own experiences when
you were their age? What similarities or differences do you have with the learners
you observed?
During the days of my observation, I immediately recall those time that my teacher
discussing Math Subject and gave a problem just like sir Glenn did to his students. I
remember those things that I raise my hand to answer in front of my classmates that my
teacher praise me. I remember my classmates asking me what is answer. I remember
everything.

2. Think of a teacher you cannot forget for positive or negative reasons. How did
she/he help or not help you with your needs (physical, emotional, social, and
cognitive)? How did it affect you?
Mr. Torrenueva, my favorite Math teacher in Maysan NHS, inspires me with his question
even his voice is very little, he is an effecience and effective teachers. He make me a very
wise and I believe that I am his fruit in his teaching. He inspires me to be like him as a

teacher. He motivates me and even to my classmates. I and my classmates will make

favourites his subject.

3. Which is your favourite theory of development? How can this guide you as a
future teacher?
Piaget's Cognitive development is my favorite theory for this is all about the learning of
the student. It helps me to how to understand my students for their learning process. Of
course, for being a teacher, it is not an easy profession, we are part to the learning of
many children of the society.

4. Share your other insights here.

Some students felt they are not a part of a classroom. They still alone. Teachers were need
to be a good motivator to their students. They are responsible for the learning of students.
They may provide everything they need for learning. Even to the thinking they have.
