BYU-Idaho Preschool Lesson Plan

PHASE #3
Lesson Plan #27
Lab 2
Gravity
Date:
Wednesday, July 8th, 2015
Supervisor:
Karissa
Lead Teacher: Casie Billmire
Children and Learning/Development Goals:
1. Peyton Taking turns Peyton will take turns while playing at the manipulative tables to
be able to drop the pompom or balls down in the correct spot.
2. Claire Sharing Claire will share with her friends at the creative center taking turns and
passing on her items to throw them down to do the Splat! painting.
3. Tristan Sharing and making friends - Tristan will share with his friends while playing
outside with the water and ramps.
4. Caiden Shapes Caiden will work on shapes while Splat painting as he sees the different
shapes created when the pom-poms and other items are thrown on the ground.
5. Isaac Work on motor skills Isaac will develop motor skills outdoors with the trampoline
and jumping up and down on it.
6. Raleigh Counting consistently Raleigh will count consistently at the manipulatives table
as he counts the number of balls that he drops down the tubes.
7. Cade Gross motor skills - Cade will develop motor skills outdoors with the trampoline
and jumping up and down on it.
Preassessment and Findings:
Many of the children in our class seem to have a lot of interest in the science activities that
we plan so I have chosen aspects of science to focus on. During past lessons children have
made comments like That is so cool, How does that work? What makes it happen?
These comments were made in many different activities like science, math, and outdoor
about objects falling and things moving. I do not remember exactly which activities or which
students said the comments.
Cade made a comment about how things fall down but when asked he couldnt
explain why.
Olivia knows that all things that go up will fall down.
In a conversation with Kennley she said that things fall to the earth because of no
wind.
Cade rolled a basketball down the sidewalk hill and stood at the top looking really
confused. Then he asked Why isnt it coming back up?
Ideas to be Emphasized:
1. Gravity pulls on us to keep us here on earth.
2. Whatever goes up must come down.
Preschool Concepts or Skills:
1. Short/tall
2. Up/down
3. Heavy/Light

setting the pins up.
Intentional Teaching: The teacher at this
center will need to help maintain the center
and that the children are taking turns with the
ball and encouraging the children to set up the
balls to match the template on the ground.
Description: The small sensory table will be
set up with water in it and then have ramps
going into it as well as to the ground for the
children to use the tools to make the water go
down the ramps.
Objective: Children will develop their
cognitive skills as they explore and investigate
with the water trying to get it to go up and
down the ramps.
Intentional Teaching: The teachers at this
center will get to engage in the play with the
children and problem solve with them on
where the water goes and which way it goes.

towards the floor and ask them to do the same

with theirs. Once we do this I will have them
pick them up and hold it to their knees again
while I show them what to do next. I will then
toss mine in the air and let it fall and then have
the students repeat. After doing this I will have
the children take a seat and lay their scarves
across their lap or sit on them depending on
how they do. We will then talk about how
objects do not stay in the air and that they
always fall to the ground because of gravity.
I will transition to gravity by asking them about
us and how we stay on the ground to see if
they catch on. I will then mention that gravity
pulls on everything on earth including us. Then
to demonstrate I will have all the children
stand up and jump once. I will ask them if they
floated in the air or fell back to the ground.
Hopefully they will say fall to the ground and
understand that gravity pulls on us too. I will
then ask them what sort of things do float in
the air. They should come up with bugs, birds,
airplanes, and other things that fly. I can then
lead to the fact that gravity works on them too
but they use their wings to stay up in the air.

Description & Objective
On the back of each of the childrens name tags I
will put a picture of some type of science
instrument. This includes magnifying glass, beaker,
earth, and magnets. The teachers at the head of
the group will have a big picture of each and so the
children will have the opportunity to find the
teacher that matches the picture in the back of
their name tag.
Description: The children will each be given an
object from a ball, to a feather, and a marker. The
group will be split so a few students and a teacher
will go to the top of the fort and drop the items
while the other students watch with another
teacher. After the items are dropped the students
that watched will pick them up and then switch
with the other students to take their turn.
Objective: The children will develop their
cognitive skills as they learn about the gravity and
witness it in action as the items fall from the top of

Intentional Teaching: Two teachers will be
needed during this small focus to have enough
supervision since items will be dropped from the
top of the fort. After this the teacher will direct the
conversation to gravity and how it pulls items to
the ground.

(Madison
District Library)

Description: This activity will have paper clips on

string with some magnets. The students will have
the string placed on the table with the paper clip
threaded through. They will then take their magnet
and put it over the paper clip to make it stand
up/defy gravity.
Objective: Children will develop their cognitive
abilities and stretch their minds that there are
certain things that defy gravity and magnetic force
is one of the things.
Intentional Teaching: The teacher at this center
will have to demonstrate what to do and help the
children to accomplish the goal. After which she
will discuss how magnets can make things defy
gravity because of the force.
IELG D1:G8:CI1- Identifies objects that have an
effect on other objects (e.g. dirt makes the water
muddy, the eat's dirty paws leave marks on the
floor, Jelly
makes my hands sticky, chili makes my tongue feel
spicy).

As a review I will pass a scarf to each of the students and we

will repeat the part of gathering time where the children take
the scarf and toss it in the air and let it drop. We will talk
about when things go up they must come back down just like
the scarf did.
The dice will have a different animal on each side with an
action that goes with it. I will begin by rolling the dice and
then giving some of the children some turns to roll it till we do
all of the sides.
Letter b sandwich. I will have pictures of two pieces of
bread for the bottom and top of our sandwich but the only
things that can go in between are words that start with a b.
I will have pictures of different items and the things that start
with b will be placed to between the two pieces of bread to
make our b sandwich.

The children will do the actions while holding the turtle bean
bags.

This is My Spot!

I will have two different colored spots to give the children.

They will set the spot in front of them and we will clap on the
spot saying This is my spot, my spot, my spot. This is my
spot, my spot, my spot. After we do the chant the teacher
will call one of the colors, those children stand up. One color
will spin three times, the other color will hop 3 times when
their color is called.
