The institute will take place June 20-21 at the State Historical
Museum in Des Moines. It is open to any K-12 social studies
teacher and entirely FREE to attend. License renewal credit will
also be available.
Time will be devoted to discuss the process for writing the draft of
new social studies standards. Elementary teachers will have the
opportunity to attend our statewide elementary social studies
professional development. In addition, there will be sessions
targeted towards history content, a Supreme Court update,
psychology, technology, and much more. You can see the draft of

TheIowaCouncilfortheSocialStudiesseekssocialstudies
educatorstosubmitproposalsforthe2016conference.The
conferencetakesplaceOctober6,2016attheAirportHolidayInn
inDesMoines.Thisyear'sconferencethemeisRaisingthe
SocialStudiesStandard:SocialStudiesforthe21stCentury.The
councilseeksproposalsaroundthethemeandthefollowingsub
themes.Wewouldalsowelcomeelementaryspecificproposals.
ProposalsareacceptedJanuary18June1,2016.Ifproposals

Topic:TypesofEconomicSystemsandthethreequestionsevery
economicsystemmustanswer.
Havestudentsbreakintogroupsoftwoorthree.Thenstrandthe
studentsonadesertedislandinwhatevermanneryouwant(I
usedaspringbreaktriptoHawaiiwheretheywouldrideona
threehourboattourwhichwould,ofcourse,haveasinkingboat).
Oncetheyareontheislandtheymustfigureouthowtheyare
goingtosurvive.Theyarestuckontheislandforaminimumof
sixmonths.Havestudentspresenttotheclasswhattheyare
goingtoproduce,howtheyaregoingtoproducethoseproducts,

andwhoontheislandgetstousetheproducts.Wanttoadda
twist?Alloweachpersoninthegrouptograboneitemfromthe
boatorplanebeforeitsinksintotheocean.Providealistofitems
forthegrouptograb(sharkrepellent,oceanmap,caseofC
rations,transistorradio,fiftyfeetofrope,etc).Alsohavefun
makingthemprovethattheycandothethingstheyclaimtheycan
do.Forexample,manywillstrugglemakinganaxeusingastick
(meterstick)andarock(CDcase)withavine(string).Greatway
totieintheorywithrealitywithalittlehandson.

LibraryofCongress.

Storyboard

TheadventoftheC3FrameworkbytheNationalCouncilforthe
SocialStudies(NCSS)hasbeenagamechangerforsocial
studieseducation.Socialstudiesteachers,regardlessofgrade
level,mustconsiderthetypesofclassroomactivitiesand
assessmentstohelpbuildstudentscontentarealiteracyskills.
Forsome,thisisadramaticshifttotheirclassroompractices.Itis
importantforteacherstodesignclassroomactivitiesthatallow

studentstoexploretopicsinmoredepthandengagethemin
higherorderthinking.
Oneactivitytolookatdifferentperspectivesaboutaneventisfor
studentstocreatetwostoryboardswithcompetingarguments.
Withstoryboards,studentsutilizewordsandimagestoconvey
theirunderstandingofaneventinachronologicalnarrative.This
activityisbeneficialforstrugglingreadersandEnglishforSecond
Languagestudents.
Forthisactivity,theteacherwillwanttoselectatrialfromFamous
Trials,http://law2.umkc.edu/faculty/projects/ftrials/ftrials.htm.Each
trialonthiswebsitecontainsevidencefromtheprosecutionand
defense.Studentsshouldexaminethisevidenceinsmallgroups.
Theteachermayprovidestudentsagraphicorganizertorecord
theevidencefromtheprosecutionanddefense.Studentsthen
discusstheirfindingswithgroupmembers.Theteachershould
movearoundtheclassroomtohelpthegroupsduringthis
researchprocess.Aclassdebriefthenneedstooccurforstudents
tosharetheirfindingsandfortheteachertoclarifyany
misunderstandingsbythestudents.
Afterthisdebrief,theteachershouldputstudentsbackintotheir
groupsandgivedirectionstocreatetwostoryboardsaboutoneof
thetrials.IhaveprovidedtwostoryboardstoshowhowtheBritish
andcolonistsviewedtheBostonMassacredifferently.Thework
forthestoryboardsneedstobesplitupamongthegroup
members.Thisactivityallowsstudentstoexplorehowdifferent
groupsmayviewthesameeventverydifferentlywhile
summarizingthesetwodivergentperspectives.Theteachermay
showsomeexamplestoryboardsforstudentstovisualizethe
expectationsoftheassignment.Afterstudentscompletethis
assignment,theyshouldshowcaseandexplaintheircompleted
storyboards.Theteacherneedstoaskquestionsthatgetstudents
tounpacktheirthinkinginthestoryboards.Thecontentarea
literacyskillsembeddedwithinthisactivityalignwiththebest
intentionsforthetypeofteachingthatweshouldbedoing
