Assessment is not only important for the students but it is also important for the

teacher. Without assessments the teacher would not be able to plan effectively towards his
or her classes. The assessments in this unit only assessed the students on what they
learned in each lesson. The teacher will make sure that he or she assess the students on
the content taught in each lesson. The formative assessments do not always have to be
written assessments sometimes observation assessments are enough for the teacher to use
and assess the students.
Before the unit begins the teacher will use a pre-assessment to gage how much
knowledge on fossils the students already have. The teacher will also use different types
of resources such as a KWL chart in the first lesson to gain knowledge of the students
understanding. This will help guide the unit and let the teacher know what he or she
needs to focus on the most in the unit. This will show what the students know already and
what they are interested in when it comes to fossils. From the pre-assessment I was able
to tell that the students already knew what a paleontologist is and they had an idea about
what they do, we still needed to focus on paleontologists to discover a more in-depth
understanding.
The teacher will use formative assessments after every single lesson. The teacher
will use these to make sure the students were able to comprehend what was taught and to
see what he or she will need to review the most or reteach in the next lesson. The
assessments will be challenging and make sure that the students paid full attention during
the lesson. After seeing the results from each formative assessment the teacher will be
able to change his or her lessons to prompt learning for each student. It is important that
each student is able to learn to the best of his or her ability.

The summative assessment will be given at the end of the unit. This will assess
the students on the knowledge and skills they have learned from each lesson in the unit.
There will be a variety of questions on the assessment such as fill in the blank, true or
false where the students have to defend their answer, short answer and number ordering
steps in fossil formation. The different types of questions are geared towards different
types of learners. Every type of learner is being supported in this unit.
The differing assessments were chosen for this unit to make sure that each student
was learning what was covered in each objective. Very student learns differently so it is
important to assess inn different ways to make sure that each learning style is
complimented in the assessments. The final assessment was created to assess the students
on all of the objectives from each lesson taught in this unit.

Chart of Student Grades from Fossil Final Assessment

Class 1
Class 2

Reflection of Final Assessment

Most of the students were able to do really well on the final assessment. I gave the
students a study guide for the test to make sure they were all prepared as much as
possible. I was very pleased with how good the grades were. The second class scored
nine 100s on the test! I was amazed at how well everyone did on the assessment. Those
who did not score well I know did not look at their study guide and study for the test. I
gave a pretest at the beginning of the unit and the students did not do very well on the
pretest, but after giving the final assessment I know the students were able to learn a lot
through the unit. They all improved so much form where we first started!
I gave formative assessments throughout the unit and the students for the most
part did well on those assessments as well. We learned a lot in this unit that the students
had never heard before so this was almost all new material for them. I am proud of how
far they have come since we started. I am confident that the students know the different
types of fossils, how fossils are formed, the fossils found in Alabama, and what fossil
fuels are after giving the assessment.
