Snowball also threw on to the fire the ribbons

with which the horses
manes and tails had usually been decorated on
market days.
Ribbons, he said, should be considered as
clothes, which are the mark of
a human being. All animals should go naked.
They explained that by their studies of the past
three months the pigs had
succeeded in reducing the principles of
Animalism to Seven Commandments.
These Seven Commandments would now be
inscribed on the wall; they would
form an unalterable law by which all the
animals on Animal Farm must live for
ever after.
The pigs did not
actually work, but directed and supervised the
others. With their superior
knowledge it was natural that they should
assume the leadership. Boxer and
Clover would harness themselves to the cutter
or the horse-rake (no bits or reins
were needed in these days, of course) and
tramp steadily round and round the
field with a pig walking behind and calling out
Gee up, comrade! or Whoa
back, comrade! as the case might be
Napoleon, with the dogs following him, now
mounted on to the raised portion
of the floor where Major had previously stood
to deliver his speech. He
announced that from now on the Sundaymorning Meetings would come to an
end. They were unnecessary, he said, and
wasted time. In future all questions
relating to the working of the farm would be
settled by a special committee

Describe what your primary source quote

does to support your theme.
What does it explain to the reader about your
analysis?
Why is it important for the reader to
understand your character and this quote?
Snowball is a main character that resembles a
dictator which is what totalitarianism is. Snowball
gives orders to Mollie by telling her ribbons are
for humans. It is important to know this because
Snowball is recognized as Leon Trotsky in past
history.
Snowball and Napoleon set rules down for the
animals to follow. As you see they seem to be in
control setting commandments down. This
supports totalitarianism because Snowball and
Napoleon created some sort of government to
control the animals. This is important because it
shows how these two pigs took over and showed
that they were the powerful ones who ruled over
all.
The pigs assumed they were the leaders so they
mainly just supervised while all the other animals
worked for them. Bossing the animals around
reveals that the pigs have power over the animals
which is how totalitarianism worked. You set up a
group to form a small government and then you
start giving orders as the pigs did in Animal Farm.
Throughout the story the pigs are always in
charge so that is important to know because the
pigs are the smartest on the field.

Once Old Major passed away and Snowball was

ran out of the barn Napoleon had now took full
charge. Dictatorship was just beginning with a
single person which characterizes Napoleon as
Joseph Stalin who was looking for full power.
Napoleon and Stalin both deceive their followers
for power and ambition. It is important to know
this because Napoleon stays leader throughout the
story and the animals continue to obey him, yet
we thought.

of pigs, presided over by himself. These would

meet in private and afterwards
communicate their decisions to the others.
Napoleon read out
the orders for the week in a gruff soldierly
style, and after a single singing of
Beasts of England, all the animals dispersed.

No more delays, comrades! cried Napoleon

when the footprints had been
examined. There is work to be done. This very
morning we begin rebuilding
the windmill, and we will build all through the
winter, rain or shine. We will
teach this miserable traitor that he cannot undo
our work so easily. Remember,
comrades, there must be no alteration in our
plans: they shall be carried out to
the day. Forward, comrades! Long live the
windmill! Long live Animal Farm!
In these days Napoleon
rarely appeared in public, but spent all his time
in the farmhouse, which was
guarded at each door by fierce-looking dogs.
When he did emerge, it was in a
ceremonial manner, with an escort of six dogs
who closely surrounded him and
growled if anyone came too near.

8. Napoleon

Napoleon acted swiftly and ruthlessly. He

ordered the hens rations to be stopped, and
decreed that any animal giving so much as a
grain of corn to a hen should be punished by
death. The dogs saw to it that these orders were
carried out.

9. Napoleon

Without any further prompting they

confessed that they had been secretly in touch
with Snowball ever since his expulsion, that
they had collaborated with him in destroying
the windmill, and that they had entered into an
agreement with him to hand over Animal Farm
to Mr. Frederick. They added that Snowball
had privately admitted to them that he had
been Joness secret agent for years past. When
they had finished

Napoleon gives out a soldierly talk to show power

that he is now in charge and that shows they will
have to listen. To be in power you have to show
that you are made of it so Napoleon puts on his
war face and speaks out on behalf of his farm
animals.
Dictators speak what they want to be done so he
puts the animals to work. No matter what the
weather is they will work until everything was
complete. Napoleon does not care for the animals
and for his own benefit and power. Napoleon
gives an order to keep working and they have
nothing to do but to keep working because he has
all the power.

As Joseph had guards for him so did Napoleon in

case there was a sneak attack or an ambush. If
Napoleon was to give an order to the dogs it
would be done in a heartbeat. The dogs were his
servers but in a security way not in the labor force
like the farm animals. This is important to know
because Joseph has his own people to guard him
and kill those that he ordered dead. Napoleon had
his dogs kill for him if his orders werent being
followed which is also a role for a leader. They
always have to have a security that would do all
the dirty work for them. The dogs stick around
Napoleon because he also rules them.
The hens began to disobey Napoleon because he
began taking more eggs then he needed. The hens
were upset and didnt want to listen to their leader
anymore. The hens were then threated by
Napoleon like a typical leader would do just to
show his power. This is important because it
shows that Napoleon even has control over
something that he doesnt lay or work for.
As a dictator Napoleon has to clarify that
everything is going good in his farm so as the pigs
confessed to sneaking around meeting snowball
they were then exiled. Death is part of a
dictatorship and it is important to know this
because this is a part where Napoleon is in a
strong stage of power. These pigs and other
animals a like spys helping the other team. As in
real history people would try and sabotage Joseph
and act like a follower to him just as some of the

their confession, the dogs promptly tore their

throats out, and in a terrible voice
Napoleon demanded whether any other animal
had anything to confess.
Whatever happened she would remain faithful,
work hard, carry out the orders that were given
to her, and accept the leadership of Napoleon.

animals were acting.

This text is important because it shows the other

side of who follows this communist ruler. Clover
does what is told to do and she accepts that
Napoleon is the leader. Napoleon manipulates the
animals in which clover does not know what to
do. They are told what they want to hear therefore
Cover does what she has to do to also stay alive.
This part is important because it shows the side
which is not the leader its one that obeys the
ruler. Reveals how the ruling of Napoleon can
make them faithful to him and carry out orders.
