Running Head: WCHS Library Media Program Self-Evaluation Spring 2016

The following report is a program evaluation of the operation of the WCHS Media Center.
Goals
In the following report you will find the results of the self-evaluation performed by the current
Media Specialist, Karen Ogden, and the future Media Specialist, LaRae Thornton. Our goal is to
identify where the media center is operating at a Basic level and increase these categories to
Proficient. Another goal is to choose one section where the Media Center is operating at a
Proficient level and increase this portion to Exemplary. In the following chart you will see that
the WCHS Center is operating smoothly, but we have room to improve.

Summary of Results
By viewing the table above the two categories that the media center has a need of improvement
is in Student Achievement and Instruction, and Administrative Support.
Goal 1) Identify categories at the basic level and develop plans of action to increase to proficient.
Category 1-Student Achievement and Instruction: 2. Collaborative Planning
At this point the media center is operating at the Basic level. The SLMS participates in
collaborative planning when initiated by the teacher. This can be moved to the Proficient level
by doing the following things:

SLMS will attend department meetings to discuss how to best meet the needs of
collaborating teachers. These meetings can be on a monthly rotation or bi-monthly
rotation based of teacher feedback.
SLMS can share ideas of collaboration with teachers to get them thinking about ways
they can take advantage of the media center.
SLMS will demonstrate the uses of the GSO web page and encourage them to use these
resources.

Category 1- Student Achievement and Instruction: Student Achievement

Currently the classroom teacher is responsible for assessing student achievement. This is placing
this category at the Basic level. This can be moved to the Proficient level by doing the following
things:

Work with teachers to develop a rubric of another effective means for assessing student
achievement.
The SLMS will study test scores for each department and give suggestions to teachers to
help improve their scores for certain standards by integrating technology in their lessons.

Category 5- Administrative Support: BOE and School Library Media Policy

At this point there is a technology committee at our school; however, this does not meet the
needs of developing a School Library Committee. Media Specialists currently have system level
meetings monthly, but this is not enough to support the school level commitment needed. This
category can be moved to the Proficient level by doing the following things:

Create a library media advisory committee that meets at a minimum of twice a year.
Planning and evaluations of the library media program are completed at least twice a
year.
Develop a budget that is effective and creates the funding for the acquisition of resources
needed for the program.

Goal 2) Identify one proficient area to increase to exemplary.

Currently the SLMS attends state and national level training to improve professional and
technology skills. Some information instruction occurs with collaborating teachers in initiated
by the teacher. Sporadic staff developments are offered by the media specialist and the media
specialist is knowledgeable of district professional development services. This category can be
moved to the Exemplary level by doing the following things:

The SLMS can work together with the technology committee and teachers to develop
trainings that would benefit the learning of students by increasing teacher skills of
incorporating technology into their lessons in the classroom.
Survey teachers on what kind to technology training they would most benefit from to
develop lessons designed for the 21st century.
Provide a repository of online training opportunities for teachers to participate in at their
leisure.

Levels of Proficiency
Target Indicators and Categories

Basic Proficient Exemplary

Category 1- Student Achievement and Instruction

1. Information Literacy standards are integrated into content
instruction.

2. Collaborative planning includes both the LMS and teachers to

ensure use of library media center resources that support on-going
X
classroom instruction and implementation of state curriculum and
the GPS and CCGPS.
3. Professional library media staff are engaged in active teaching
roles

4. The library media center resources encourage and support

reading, viewing, and listening.

5. Services are provided to students who have diverse learning

abilities, styles, and needs.

6. Student achievement is routinely assessed.

Category 2- Technology

collections, technology tools& technology resources that support
and enhance instruction and reflect the needs and interest of
diverse P-12 students, school and community

Category 3- Staffing

Basic Proficient Exemplary

9b. If base size is larger: A school system shall employ a full time
Library Media Specialist for each base size school or larger.

Category 4-Facilities, Access, and Resources

Basic Proficient Exemplary

10. There shall be a plan for flexibly scheduled library media

center access for students and teachers in groups or as individuals
simultaneously throughout each instructional day. Accessibility
shall refer to the facility, the staff, and the resources and shall be
based on instructional need.

11. School library media center square footage requirements

based on FTE

12. Streaming video is used throughout the school to support the

curriculum. Interactive whiteboard and computers are used for
teaching and learning throughout the school. A central electronic
media distribution system is also available.

13. Print and non-print resources and access to online information

are basic to a library media program. A school network is
effective for delivering media resources to the classroom and
beyond. Multiple computers are available for student access to
online resources that enhance instruction.

14. All library media resources are managed for maximum

efficient use. The library media center has an electronic online
public access catalog (OPAC). Funds for acquisition of computers
are utilized to implement the goals/objectives set forth in the State
Technology Plan 2007-2012 or in the System Comprehensive
School Improvement Plan.

15. One of the national educational technology goals states:

Effective and engaging software and on-line resources will be an
integral part of every schools curriculum. The GALILEO
Virtual Library provides Georgia students and teachers access to
exceptional on-line resources at no cost to the local school district.

X
operation, evaluation, and improvement of the library media
program. This committee shall annually evaluate library media
services and develop a multi-year media plan for budget services
and priorities.
19. Local Board approved library media policy is current. This
policy requires development of procedures for the school system
and for selecting materials locally, handling requests for
reconsideration of materials, considering gifts of instructional
resources, using non-school owned materials, and complying with
the copyright law.

20. Each local school system shall spend 100 percent of the funds
designated for library media center costs. (O.C.G.A. 20-2-167)

Category 6- Staff Development

21. Staff development opportunities are available both for the
library media staff to enhance their own professional knowledge
and for the library media staff to provide information and
technology literacy skills to other teachers and administrative
staff. Professional resources and services for all faculty members
are provided in the library media center for the "learning
community".
