(MetroWaterDistrict)announcedthewinnersofitsannualwateressaycontestduringanawardsceremony
heldattheGeorgiastateCapitolyesterday.
ThefirstplaceessaywaswrittenbyColtonWoodring,aseventhgraderfromNorthGwinnettMiddleSchool,
whoreceiveda$400prize.JoleeNorthrop,asixthgraderfromHightowerMiddleSchoolinCobbCounty,
wasnamedthedistrictwiderunnerup.
TheMetroWaterDistrictalsohonoredwinnersfromthecityofAtlantaandthe15countiesthatcomprisethe
MetroWaterDistrict.Eachwinnerreceiveda$100prize.
Thisisthe14thyeartheMetroWaterDistricthassponsoredtheannualwateressaycontest.Theoutreach
activityhaschallengedthousandsofmiddleschoolstudentstothinkaboutconservationandprotectionof
waterresourcesinmetroAtlanta.
Thisyearscontestfocusedonstormwaterpollution,askingWhyisstormwaterpollutionaproblem,and
whatcanyoudotopreventit?Nearly2,000studentsfromacrosstheregionsubmittedessaysinresponse.
Choosingthisyearswinnerswaschallenging,asalltheessaysweresoinspired,saidKostoulaVallianos,
principaleducationprogramspecialistwiththeMetroWaterDistrict.YoungpeopleinmetroAtlantahavea
muchbettersensethanpreviousgenerationsofjusthowpreciousournaturalresourcesare.Theyexhibita
realdesiretoprotectourwatersources.
TheessaycontestisoneofmanyinitiativesconductedbytheMetroWaterDistricttoraiseawarenessabout

dataandgoodstewardshipguidetheMetroWaterDistrictscomprehensiveapproachtomanagingwaterfor
economic,environmentalandsocialwellbeing.Workingwithlocalgovernments,waterandwastewater
utilitiesandstakeholders,theMetroWaterDistrictprotectswaterquality,supplyandrecreationalvaluein
theregionanddownstream.

throughmeasuressuchasmandatinglowflowtoiletsandshowerheadsinnewconstruction.
By2050,the15countyMetroWaterDistrictdailywaterdemandisnowprojectedtobebetween862and
898milliongallons,basedontwopopulationscenarios.Thatsanapproximately25percentreductionfrom
theDistricts2009forecast,whichprojecteddailywateruseof1.2billiongallonsin2050.Twothirdsormore
ofthewaterwithdrawnintheMetroWaterDistrictisreturnedtotheregionslakesandstreams.
WitheachMetroWaterDistrictplan,thedataweusetocreatetheforecastimproves,saidKatherine

200studentssubmitted30to60secondvideosthatfocusedonthisyearstopic,HerestheScooponPet
Waste.
Theapplicantsusedcreativeapproachessuchaswritingandsingingoriginalmusic,todeliverthemessage
thatpetwastecancreateahealthhazardforpeopleandcandooalotofdamagetotheenvironment.The
judgesreportedthatthedecisionmakingprocesswasdifficultduetothecaliberofthesubmissionsthis
year.Thethreefinalistsvideoswerechosenfortheirentertainmentvalueaswellastheirabilitytodeliver
themessagethatpickingupafteryourpethelpskeepourrivers,lakesandstreamshealthyforrecreation
