(MetroWaterDistrict)announcedthewinnersofitsannualwateressaycontestduringanawardsceremony
heldattheGeorgiastateCapitolyesterday.
ThefirstplaceessaywaswrittenbyColtonWoodring,aseventhgraderfromNorthGwinnettMiddleSchool,
whoreceiveda$400prize.JoleeNorthrop,asixthgraderfromHightowerMiddleSchoolinCobbCounty,
wasnamedthedistrictwiderunnerup.
TheMetroWaterDistrictalsohonoredwinnersfromthecityofAtlantaandthe15countiesthatcomprisethe
MetroWaterDistrict.Eachwinnerreceiveda$100prize.
Thisisthe14thyeartheMetroWaterDistricthassponsoredtheannualwateressaycontest.Theoutreach
activityhaschallengedthousandsofmiddleschoolstudentstothinkaboutconservationandprotectionof
waterresourcesinmetroAtlanta.
Thisyearscontestfocusedonstormwaterpollution,askingWhyisstormwaterpollutionaproblem,and
whatcanyoudotopreventit?Nearly2,000studentsfromacrosstheregionsubmittedessaysinresponse.
Choosingthisyearswinnerswaschallenging,asalltheessaysweresoinspired,saidKostoulaVallianos,
principaleducationprogramspecialistwiththeMetroWaterDistrict.YoungpeopleinmetroAtlantahavea
muchbettersensethanpreviousgenerationsofjusthowpreciousournaturalresourcesare.Theyexhibita
realdesiretoprotectourwatersources.
TheessaycontestisoneofmanyinitiativesconductedbytheMetroWaterDistricttoraiseawarenessabout

dataandgoodstewardshipguidetheMetroWaterDistrictscomprehensiveapproachtomanagingwaterfor
economic,environmentalandsocialwellbeing.Workingwithlocalgovernments,waterandwastewater
utilitiesandstakeholders,theMetroWaterDistrictprotectswaterquality,supplyandrecreationalvaluein
theregionanddownstream.

(Atlanta,August26)MetroAtlantaresidentswilluseapproximately25percentlesswaterin2050thanwas
projectedin2009,accordingtoalongrangeforecastpresentedtodayatameetingoftheMetropolitanNorth
GeorgiaWaterPlanningDistrictGoverningBoard.
Theforecastreflectssuccessfulconservationeffortsthathavealreadyhelpeddramaticallyreducewater
usageacrosstheregion,suchasthereplacementofinefficienttoilets,improvedleakdetection,andtiered
pricingstructureswithratesthatincreaseasthevolumeofwateruserises.
ThisforecastunderscoresMetroAtlantasprovennationalleadershipinwaterstewardshipandwaterloss
prevention,saidBoydAustin,chairmanoftheMetroWaterDistrictsGoverningBoard.
TheforecastwillinformtheMetroWaterDistrictsnextlongrangewaterplan,whichisintheprocessof
beingupdatedforapprovalin2016.Theforecastincorporateseconomicandpopulationprojectionsaswell
aswaterutilitybillingdatatoestimatefutureresidentialandnonresidentialwaterneeds.
InadditiontotheMetroWaterDistrictsefforts,GeorgiasWaterStewardshipActhasbeeninstrumentalin
improvingwaterefficiencylocallyandstatewide,ChairmanAustinsaid.Thishasbeenaccomplished
throughmeasuressuchasmandatinglowflowtoiletsandshowerheadsinnewconstruction.
By2050,the15countyMetroWaterDistrictdailywaterdemandisnowprojectedtobebetween862and
898milliongallons,basedontwopopulationscenarios.Thatsanapproximately25percentreductionfrom
theDistricts2009forecast,whichprojecteddailywateruseof1.2billiongallonsin2050.Twothirdsormore
ofthewaterwithdrawnintheMetroWaterDistrictisreturnedtotheregionslakesandstreams.
WitheachMetroWaterDistrictplan,thedataweusetocreatetheforecastimproves,saidKatherine
Zitsch,DirectoroftheMetroWaterDistrict.Themostrecentdatahighlighttheeffectivenessofour
conservationandefficiencymeasures,whicharesovitaltoourfutureandoureconomy.

Approximately30percentofwateruseintheaverageAmericanhomeoccursinthebathroom,with

District.Theannualwatersavingsthatresultsfrom100,000inefficienttoiletsbeingreplacedwith
highefficiencyandlowflowmodelsisenoughtofilltheGeorgiaAquarium90timesor1,363
Olympicsizeswimmingpools.
Incelebrationof100,000toiletsrebated,theMetroWaterDistrict,inpartnershipwithTOTOUSA,
MarinePlumbingServicesandSouthernSprinklerSystems,hasawardedtheChattahoocheeNature
Centerwithafreewaterauditand$1,000inTOTOwaterefficientfixturesasthewinneroftheGreat
PlumbingFixtureGiveaway.Twofinalists,MakingAWayHousing,Inc.andAnnandaleVillage,will
alsoreceivefreewateraudits.

District)askedhighschoolstudentsfromaroundmetroAtlantatocreatepublicserviceannouncementsto
callattentiontothestepsresidentscantaketoimprovewaterqualityinmetroAtlanta.Thisyear,morethan
200studentssubmitted30to60secondvideosthatfocusedonthisyearstopic,HerestheScooponPet
Waste.
Theapplicantsusedcreativeapproachessuchaswritingandsingingoriginalmusic,todeliverthemessage
thatpetwastecancreateahealthhazardforpeopleandcandooalotofdamagetotheenvironment.The
judgesreportedthatthedecisionmakingprocesswasdifficultduetothecaliberofthesubmissionsthis
year.Thethreefinalistsvideoswerechosenfortheirentertainmentvalueaswellastheirabilitytodeliver
themessagethatpickingupafteryourpethelpskeepourrivers,lakesandstreamshealthyforrecreation
andprotectshumanhealthandtheplantsandanimalsthatdependoncleanwater.

Whenitcomestowatermanagement,weareallinittogether.TheHighSchoolVideoContestinvolves
studentsinpromotinghowarearesidentscandotheirpart,saidDallasMayorBoydAustin,chairmanofthe
District.Manypeopledontrealizethesophisticatedinfrastructureandmanagementrequiredtotreatand
deliverwatertoyourhouseonaguaranteed24/7basis.Preventingwaterpollutioncanhelpdefraysomeof
thetreatmentandoperationscostsnecessarytoensurewehaveclean,safewateravailableeachtimeyou
turnonthefaucet.
Thesestudentsdidsuchawonderfuljobwithvideoproductionandthemessaging.Petwasteisanuisance
andcanimpactourwaterquality.Manypeopledontrealizethattheiractionscancontributetotheproblem,
butthesevideoswillhelpusspreadtheword,explainedMetroWaterDistrictPrincipalEducationProgram
SpecialistKostoulaVallianos.ThevideoswillairthroughouttheregionbytheMetroWaterDistrictandits
membersinpresentations,onwebsitesandonlocalaccessstations.
Thestudentsandtheirschoolswillsharetheprizemoney.TheMetroWaterDistrictwillalsohonorthe
