POLIOMYELITIS

This is an acute infectious fever cost by an enteric virus

affecting anterior on sales causing paralysis of the (m) of
limbs and spine.

CAUSE: By RNA virus Brun hilde, Lansing, Leon: cause damage to lower
motor neuron
Clinical features: Stage-I- acute stage
1. Pre paralytic Phase neck stiffness, irritability,
aching of muscle, spasm.
2. Paralytic Phase bulbar form, spinal form.
Stage 2- Recovery stage recovery in paralysed
muscles.
Stage 3- post polio Residual paralysis- imbalance of muscle power, atrophy of
muscle, shortening of leg.
Management- 1. Acute stage- plaster splints, sand bags, medicines
2. Recovery Stage- recovery of paralysed muscle,
prevent further deformity, manual muscle testing,
passive
exercises,
massage,
hydrotherapy,
mobilization, strengthening, increase range of motion.
3. Stage of residual paralysis younts procedure,
soutters operation, osteotomy, tendon transfer.
