Dear Parents,

On behalf of the staff at Dunrae Gardens Elementary School, I am

happy to welcome you to the 2013-2014 school year! I would like to
take this opportunity to introduce myself, as I will be your
son/daughters grade five teacher, and I am looking forward to working
with each and every one of you in the coming year. At Dunrae Gardens,
we have an exceptionally diverse group of students, which is viewed as
a valuable attribute. I believe that every student has something
important to contribute to the group, and it is my responsibility to
ensure that classroom practices support this belief. The strategies that
I will welcome into the classroom as an inclusive differentiated teacher;
will both honour and respect all types of learning styles.
I explicitly value an inclusive philosophy in my classroom; that
inclusion is a way of thinking and acting, which allows every individual
to feel, accepted, valued, and safe. I have recognized that all children
learn differently, and have become aware of the inclusive classroom
consciously evolving, to meet the changing needs of its members. As
your child(s) teacher, I will foster the classroom where all students,
including those with diverse needs and abilities, have a sense of
personal belonging and achievement. As well, I will engage in
practices, material and resources that will allow students with a wide
range of learning needs to be taught together effectively.
I strongly believe that connecting with parents in an inclusive
classroom begins with developing a positive rapport with students. By
working together to foster positive relationships, we can create a
successful life long learning path, and strengthen our capacity to
provide the foundation for a richer future for our students. For that
reason, I would like to introduce you to some of the methods I plan on
using to encourage an accepting environment for students.
As a differentiated teacher, I will encourage students to explore novel
ways of sharing thoughts and intentions. This will be done through the
safe and welcoming environment of the classroom, as students will be
able to embrace difficulties in a problem- solving approach and realize
that it is a natural path of learning. While this will ease any anxiety
from students in the classroom, I will also introduce social justice and
citizenship. As this will be evident in my classroom, it will allow
students to be seen as valued and equal members of the learning
environment, and they will learn to respect and advocate for diversity
in the larger community.
I am looking forward to meeting and speaking with all parents in the
upcoming year! I encourage you to read on about inclusion and its

benefits, strategies and more in the enclosed pamphlet attached. If

you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me at
647-642-5726.
Sincerely,
Jamie Milne
