LESSON
PLAN
DATE: March 11, 2015
CLASS: Kindergarten
Adaptations/
Modifications
DURATION: 45 minutes
SCHOOL: Mountainview
SUBJECT: Mathematics
TOPIC: Shapes
Allow one of the students to sit in the front row on the mat
(specifically in the green corner if needed) when explaining the
activity instructions. Remind the student to sit down correctly as
many times as possible so that all the students may see. The
student will most likely not sit correctly, be bouncing or looking
around the classroom. As long as he is not disrupting the lesson
or the students and he is sitting quietly, it is acceptable for this
student to not always be facing forward. As long as he is
listening, understands the instructions and expectations some
movement may be tolerated.
The shapes used when completing the dinosaur activity will
already be cut out for students who struggle with cutting.
The large cut out shapes that will be placed on the ground
during the song will have points on them. In order to avoid any
arguments, the students will only have to stand on any point on
the edges of the shape.
work in a team
exercise gross motor skills and move around the
classroom singing along to a song
PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCIES:
Competency 4: To pilot teaching/learning situations that are appropriate to the
students concerned and to the subject content with a view to developing the
competencies targeted in the programs of study.
-Students already know their shapes, but this is a reinforcement lesson to get them moving.
Furthermore, this lesson is connected to the dinosaur unit therefore the students may use
their prior knowledge concerning what they already know about dinosaurs and shapes and
apply this knowledge when creating their dinosaurs during the final activity.
Competency 5: To evaluate student progress in learning the subject content and
mastering the related competencies.
-Throughout the lesson, I will be circulating around the classroom to make sure the students
are on task and placing their shapes in the correct places when reproducing the template. I
will make sure that the students write the numbers correctly and in between the lines before
they hand in their final work.
Competency 6: To plan, organize and supervise a class in such a way as to promote
students learning and social development.
-All cut out shapes will be made and prepared before the lesson so that the lesson flows and
goes well. These shapes will facilitate the lesson and enable the students to reference what
is expected.
Competency 7: To adapt his or her teaching to the needs and characteristics of
students with learning disabilities, social maladjustments or handicaps.
-Concerning the curriculum, no adaptations or modifications need to be made. It is involving
the behaviour and management of a child that the lesson will be altered to his needs such as
staying on task, not interrupting others and participating. The student will also need to work
with his classmates in order for the lesson to go well.
TIME
LESSON
Introduction
Have all the students sit on the mat (there should be no more than five
2
students in a row)
minutes *Allow one student to be sitting in the front and if possible on the green
place mat in the corner.
Remind the students that if they have any questions or answers they
must raise their hand and listen to others when they are speaking.
Discuss with the students that we will be reviewing shapes today
5
Review basic shapes: triangle, oval, circle, square and rectangle
minutes
Have cut out shapes to show the students and explain to them the
basic characteristics of each shape.
A triangle has 3 points
A square has four points and all the sides are equal(the same size)
A circle is round
An oval is like a circle but longer
A rectangle also has four points but is longer than a square
*Hold the cut out shapes to show the student and point at the corners
with your finger so that the students have a visual.
Show images of objects on the smartboard and ask the student what
5
minutes shape is the object.
Development
3
Introduce a song about shapes to students.
minutes
Can you make a circle circle circle
Can you make a circle
Show me how
Explain to the students that the class will be separated in three (6
students in each group)
Let them know that you may change the song using a different shape.
TIME
LESSON
For example:
Can you make a triangle triangle triangle
Can you make a triangle
Show me how
Most students wont understand why you are singing the song.
Explain to them that they will be creating these shapes using their
bodies and as a group.
*Models of these different shapes will be placed on the floor so that
students have a visual and if they are unaware of how to place
themselves they have a reference which they only have the put their
feet on the points of the shape given. There will be 6 points on each
shape so that the students know where to place their feet rather than
arguing on where they should go.
Give an example to the students so that they know what is expected.
5
minutes
Explain that you will be singing the song and when you change the
shape they must change positions and become that shape.
Start the activity by setting a 45 second timer for each shape after you
have sung the song.
Follow these steps for each shape. Sing the song for each of these
shapes: triangle, circle, rectangle, square and oval.
Use this song template:
*The blank spaces are for the shape chosen
Can you make a ______ _______ _______
Can you make a ______
Show me how
When all shapes are done ask the students to quietly sit back down on
the place mat.
Conclusion
Activity instructions:
When all eyes are on the teacher and all mouths are zipped the
teacher may start explaining the following activity.
TIME
minutes
LESSON
Let the students know that they will be creating dinosaurs using the
shapes previously discussed in the lesson.
Remind the shapes to the students and hang them up on the board so
that they may see them if they need a reference. (triangle, rectangle,
oval, circle and square)
Show examples of the activity to the students. Have the templates up
so that all the students may see them.
There are five dinosaur templates:
Apatosaurus
Tyrannosaurus Rex
Stegosaurus
Pteranodon
Triceratops
Explain the activity in small chunks and in steps so that the students
know what they are expected to do.
Let the students know that they will need glue, a pencil and colored
crayons or markers.
Allow the students to choose which dinosaur template they want to
work with.
Once they have chosen their template they will be given a small plastic
bag with cut out shapes in them of a certain color.
Along with that template and plastic bag they will also be given a blank
piece of white paper.
On this white paper they must reproduce the dinosaur shown on their
template on a different piece of paper(their white paper) and place the
shapes in the correct places to create their dinosaur.
*This will enable the teacher to see if the student may reproduce the
dinosaur given a model or if they will place the shapes wherever on the
paper.
Once they are done placing their shapes they may glue them onto their
white paper and color a habitat around their dinosaur.
*They should use the characteristics they have learnt in class about
each of the dinosaurs. For example, the Apatosaurus is a
TIME
LESSON
herbivore(plant eater) therefore it should have plants and trees around
it. Also there were no humans when the dinosaurs were present so
there should not be a picture of them playing with the dinosaur.
When their work is completed they must come and see the teacher so
that they can be given an additional paper where they will count the
number of shapes on their dinosaurs.
For the final step, the students must count the number of each shape
they have and fill in the blanks by writing the specific number in
between the lines.
*Hang up the template so that the students know what is expected.
*The template has the shape written in words but also a small picture
of it beside it so that the students are placing their numbers in the
correct lines.
If the student has 3 circles, 2 rectangles and 1 oval, but no squares or
triangles, they must still put a zero in the lines for these shapes.
TIME
LESSON
appropriate and they are still getting their work done.
Assessment
Circulate around the classroom and make sure the students are:
- placing their cut out shapes in the correct places using the
template
- counting the right shapes and writing them in the correct lines
- writing the numbers neatly and in between the lines
