Being a female Latina I have had many different goals in my life.

Ever since I was in

elementary school I have strived for the best possible grades, even though I didnt know how
much it would affect my future. It was not until I was in junior high and high school that I really
understood how much grades and knowledge would mean to further my education and future.
Academically I wanted to maintain a 4.00 GPA throughout my years in school so I really pushed
myself to do good in school. I have had trouble with test anxiety, which sometimes brought my
grades and scores down, one of my goals was to overcome that problem. I knew if my academics
stayed decent, my professional goals would have a greater chance of being achieved.
Ever since I was little I would take care of my stuffed animals and help them feel better if
they were sick. I knew growing up I wanted to take care of real animals, so becoming a
veterinarian was the first goal on my mind. As I entered high school, I realized I loved
psychology and pharmacy. I love seeing how the human brain functions and how medication
treats the medical needs of an individual.
My personal goals are to help my community and family by serving them in ways that
will benefit them. I want to be happy with my life and help people find happiness in their lives. I
have always wanted to be the type of person someone can come to if they ever need to talk to or
discuss anything that is on their mind.
Being a student of the Academy for Math, Engineering and Science, I feel I have made
satisfactory progress toward my goals and graduation. I have maintained a 3.9 GPA, taking
Honors, Advanced Placement and University of Utah classes. In school, I have helped with
Freshman House which is a leadership position mainly focused on helping the new freshman of
our school be welcomed and orientated into our AMES family. Being involved with this program
for two years, 2014 and 2015, I have made many friends and there are students who still come to

me to ask questions about the school because they knew me from freshman house. I have joined
the AMES student council which helped me interact with different classmates from other grades
and help with school activities such as dances and fundraisers. In the service club Interact, I was
the vice president 2013 2014 which was a great experience because me and fellow interactors
got to help people all over the world. At St. Stephens Episcopal Church, I was a teachers
assistant for the childrens classes. By having these leaderships skills in different areas in my life,
I feel I could be a good representative for the Somos Foundation.
Some of the honors I have received were in AP Art History in tenth grade and Physics
Honors in eleventh grade. In 2014, the principal of AMES, Mr. Brett Wilson felt I was in such a
good leadership position, I had the honor to speak in front of all of AMES students, teachers and
faculty about diversity and friendships in a school assembly.
In my community, I have participated as vice president in Interact, volunteered at the
West Valley Animal Shelter and helped with church fundraisers and activities such as the
children church. In AMES I have participated in such activities as soccer, dance, student council,
freshman house, Interact club, robotics, theatre and yearbook. I have loved participating in these
activities because they help me intermix with other people and bounce ideas with one another.
Along with being an adopted female Latina, I was also raised by my single mother. I have
had to get jobs to help support us and on top of that I have had extra activities. Sadly, my mom
was diagnosed as being clinical depressed but she is a strong, independent, hardworking woman
who taught me to be a strong woman. I have always had to wake up for school, leave on my
own, monitor my own homework which made me more responsible as a student and daughter. I
feel all the hardships in my life have made me a better person inside and out, especially with my
education because of the organization and dedication I have in school.
