Article 1: How Young Children Approach Math
This article shows how young children can incorporate math concepts into their play activities
without the students even being aware of it, such as Nita counting her dolls in the beginning of
the article. This is extremely important since kids are so imaginative, and free play is typically
part of their everyday lives. The main strategy of this article is to get children to use their math
skills in a more creative and fun way that makes them feel like they are playing a game versus
having a math lesson. Whether it be with puzzles, blocks, water, etc. this article helps to find fun
ways for kids to learn without them necessarily knowing that they are learning critical math
skills for their future.

subtraction, multiplication, and division. The first activity; addition, involves the child drawing
circles of different colors they have to count them add them and write the sum down. The second
activity; subtraction, involves food or cheerios for example say the child has 12 and eats 3 they
then tell you how many are left. The third activity; multiplication, also involves food 2 celery
sticks with 6 raisins on each stick 2 times 6 so you would have the students tell you how many
raisins are on each stick and etc. The fourth activity; division, also involves raisins or whatever
food the teacher would choose, and solve for 12 divided by 2 or 9 divided by 3. This article is a
