Lesson Focus: Volleyball Passing and Setting

Equipment and Facilities


15 cones, 10 volleyballs

Safety Considerations:
All equipment used during this lesson will be age
appropriate and placed in a safe manner to reduce
the risk of any injuries. Each student will be spaced
out to help prevent any conflict or injuries. The
teacher will verbally review the rules and
expectations before the start of the activity. Before
the start of class, the teacher will have knowledge of
any health related issues the students may have,
which will be provided by the school. If an
emergency occurs, the teacher will remain calm
while transporting the students to a safe
environment, based on the situation. If a student is
injured, the teacher will stop the activity and have
the students seated away from the injured student
while the teacher notifies the proper authorities
(YMCA supervisor) of the childs injuries. Each
student will be aware of the teachers signals. All
equipment will be placed on the ground/ floor while
the teacher is providing instructions.

Tiger Pride. The student will sit out for the remainder
of the activity. If a fight occurs, an adult supervisor
or YMCA member will be called to detain the
students who were engaged in the altercation. The
rest of the students will be seated out the way of
harm until the situation has been resolved. Teacher
will use the 1,2,3 eyes on me. 1,2 eyes on you
cue to grab attention when needed
Teaching Strategy: The instruction will be provided
by using an interactive approach and verbal cues
(cots) to assist the students in understanding the
techniques that will be used during the activities. The
teacher will also be used as a demonstrator when
needed to assist the learning process.

Volleyball bumping

Academic Language: COTS of passing a volleyball

Psychomotor (P): SWBAT pass volleyball to a partner using the correct COTS with
75% accuracy.

Cognitive (C): SWBAT recite and demonstrate the COTS for passing volleyball to a
designated target with 100% accuracy.

Instant Activity: Knock Em Downers


Students will be split up into two teams
and each team will be on their side of the
court. There will be cones all around the
basketball court. One team will be the
knock em downers and the other team
will be the pick em uppers. The goal for
one team is to knock them down and then
the other teams goal is to pick them back

bumping she taught you yesterday. Today
we are going to discuss passing in the
game of volleyball.

Passing is very important in volleyball
because it allows a team to get the best
opportunity to score on the other team.

Students will get into self-chosen groups
of three. One student will toss the ball to
another student and that person will set
the ball to the last student and that
student will pass it to the original tosser.
Students will rotate and will 5 repetitions
at each position.

The teacher will designate one students
to help assist in the demonstration.
Nathan will also help with the
demonstration.

will have each group forming a circle and
passing to each other with the goal of not
dropping the ball while passing using the
CORRECT COTS. Students will be in
charge of counting how many they can
get in a row.

Nathan and three students chosen at
random.

Adaptations
If there are multiple students that are
having problems we could switch the
groups up to allow the lower leveled
students more chances at practice. To
make it harder students can make the
circle bigger.

participation and energy in todays

to your teammates which makes scoring
easier in a volleyball game. Can
someone tell me the COTS of the
volleyball pass? Can someone else tell
me when in a game the pass could be
used? Kristin will take you guys through
gameplay tomorrow!!
